ButterflyVPN takes a completely unique approach to online privacy and security. Rather than downloading intuitive apps, ButterflyVPN has opted for a plug-and-play approach; and it works.

It is a portable and stable, two-way proxy that offers fast speeds and unlimited data. It comes complete with industrial strength encryption, zero interaction protocol, and an ad blocker. It has two working modes: home and traveler. The traveler one is designed for those in China trying to reach blocked sites, or those away from home trying to reach local sites from their home country. While originally designed for the Chinese market, the VPN works just as well anywhere else; we personally tested it in the UK.

ButterflyVPN is contained within a USB device – similar to a disc-on-key. You plug it into a power source, connect through an existing WiFi signal, and you are good to go.

However, the same aspects that make it simple to use also create some problems for mobile use. The USB must be connected to a power source to work, and it only works through an existing WiFi signal. However, with mobile USB chargers and a growing number of WiFi hotspots, it is easy enough to find a workaround when you want to connect through your phone or tablet.

ButterflyVPN is very simple to set up and the quick start guide gives you all the information you need to get connected. Setting up the VPN connection that is right for you takes a little more work, but once you have done it the first time, it is simple to repeat the process. You have three connection options with Butterfly – Intelligent, Full, and Tor.

In intelligent mode, the VPN is meant to choose the best line based on the website you are visiting. We had some difficulty with this option as the system didn’t seem to ‘turn on’ regardless of the website address that was typed.

Full mode worked exceptionally well, giving access to geo-blocked services, including US Netflix. The only possible downside with this mode is that there are a limited number of regions to choose from – Taiwan, Europe, US, Singapore, Japan, China.

Tor is probably the best option for experienced users. There is no information on the website or the set-up site (they are two different websites) regarding how to fully use it. However, a quick scan through the terms of use does highlight a reminder that it is not to be used to aid in copyright infringement.

If we had one major complaint about the provider, it would be the content and layout of the onsite support. FAQs are limited and much of the help is written in technical language, which could be off-putting for the average user. However, the customer service representative that we spoke to via email was very helpful.

Overall, ButterflyVPN is a useful tool for creating secure, private connections for everyday surfing, streaming, and bypassing geo-blocks. Its three-year subscription deal and unlimited device connections make it value for money. However, the need for a power supply and an existing WiFi connection does create some limitations.

ButterflyVPN is good value for money. Users need to buy the hardware, but you receive a 3-year subscription as part of the deal. After the initial three years, the monthly subscription cost is one of the lowest we have ever seen. The VPN can be used on an unlimited number of devices simultaneously, however, all of your devices need to be connected to the same WiFi signal or hotspot. This is why ButterflyVPN is ideal for use in the home. The vendor offers a 14-day money-back guarantee, so you can try the product at no financial risk to yourself.

Reliability & Support

3.6

Although we had some difficulties determining whether we were actually connected on one of the modes, ButterflyVPN offers a stable VPN connection.

ButterflyVPN’s online support is not as full and comprehensive as we would like, although the video guides are useful. The quick start guide that is included with the hardware is very simple to follow and gets you set up in no time at all. The only way to contact customer support is through an online contact form, with answers coming via email. We had a response within six hours and the response was detailed and helpful.

The Bottom Line

Cost effective and useful 2-way proxy with a few drawbacks

ButterflyVPN provides a great 2-way proxy that keeps you secure and anonymous online. It is great value for money with its 3-year initial subscription and low monthly costs after this initial period. Full mode gives you the level of protection you would expect from a VPN but without the configurable features and server options that you may have become accustomed to.

  • Three connection modes – intelligent, full, and tor
  • Fast speeds and unlimited data
  • Can be used on 10+ devices simultaneously
  • 3-year subscription included in hardware purchase
  • 14-day money back guarantee

It's dead

It suddenly stopped working and no refund. Cheaters! I bought the plug-in USB router for $100 almost and now it's just a useless piece of weight. No customer service letting us know the service will be shut down. I switched to Cyberghost and PIA and learned my lesson not to get VPN service from a new provider, stick to trusted and we'll established providers.

Bad Service & Poor responsibility

I order butterflyVPN on October 16,2018. I received it around early November. It worked fine for the first month and then it stopped working. I tried to contact tech support or any staff, but no response at all. My Order Confirmed by ButterflyVPN: #10000210

No Solution, No Reply, No information from ButterflyVPN

I bought ButterflyVPN around October 2018. I used it a couple of months and then it did not work at all. I tried to contact the technical support, but NO REPLY, no contact back from them at all (up to now). Feel deep disappointed from this company.
