AltVPN Review & Test 2024 - Keep This in Mind Before Buying

Our Score: 8.1/10
Ranked 27th out of 305 VPNs
Kristina Perunicic Updated on 28th November 2023 Managing Editor

Previously known as ColanderVPN, AltVPN is Ukrainian based provider that state they’re fully committed to online anonymity through strong encryption and a strict no-logging policy. They also draw attention to their ability to break through the Great Firewall of China. We were disappointed to find that AltVPN can't unblock Netflix. So, if you need a VPN for streaming, we recommend ExpressVPN instead. It's super-fast and it can unblock more than 140 streaming sites.

So what else does AltVPN have to offer? Can it match up to other premium VPNs? Let's find out.

AltVPN operates globally but they’re somewhat sympathetic towards Eastern European users and emphasizes the need for VPNs to be utilized to access blocked content in the post-Soviet states. Users in neighboring countries such as Poland and Finland can benefit as their site has been specifically translated into Polish and Finnish.

As AltVPN is based in a jurisdiction outside of the “14-eyes", they already have a huge advantage over many competitors in the market. They use the standard protocols, OpenVPN, PPTP, and L2TP and to give you optimal security, they keeps no logs of their users activity – whether it’s your IP address, DNS queries or log sessions. All data is encrypted using TLS1.1 upwards with 2048-bit encryption and they also give you the option to use PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) keys which is another cryptographic layer and data authentication practice which preserves online anonymity.

They proudly claim that their VPN is able to circumnavigate the Chinese firewall and other state blocking mechanisms. Using OpenVPN and tunneling traffic through SSL or SSH is one way obfuscate the fact you are using a VPN and avoid the Data Packet Inspection, though AltVPN hasn’t publicly provided any instructions for this. A quick message to the support team is perhaps all it takes as they do explicitly state that this is within their capability.

As AltVPN is still relatively new to the market, they have yet to create their own custom app or proprietary software which would undoubtedly save time once a user has signed up. But thankfully they do supply clear and simple instructions to get going on all devices, such as Android, Apple devices and multiple versions of Windows. Linux users aren’t cast aside either as instructions are available for Ubutnu and Debian operating systems.

Overall, AltVPN are clearly no stranger to oppressive regimes by taking censorship very seriously and embracing many solid features to help you avoid outsiders snooping on your activities. They offer only small number of server locations at present: USA, Canada, France (as well as Eastern European countries) but have expressed their intentions to expand in the near future.

At present, they occupy a position at the lower spectrum of the market, as evidenced by their pricing structure. However, by permitting the utilization of torrent and P2P clients, an aspect that many other VPN providers approach with uncertainty, they could definitively attract certain users seeking a straightforward VPN solution.

If you're after a larger global network and a VPN that can access Netflix, we suggest looking at the best VPNs for Netflix. Not only will you benefit from best-in-class encryption for maximum anonymity, but you'll also have all the features you need to satisfy your browsing and streaming needs at your fingertips.

I think this is a good site

I have been using VPN for a year now. I liked the prices for the tariffs and after the test, I bought a paid tariff. Large selection of servers and excellent speed, discounts are often. These factors suit me completely.

I am satisified

I am using Colander for several months and it was always reliable. I was satisfied by the number of countries their servers been hosted and the speed is almost the same across the servers. I had an issue with payment once but the problem has been solved by support team quickly.

Strongly recommend this service

Works like a charm! Signed up, paid for the subscription, downloaded the OpenVPN client and configuration file, started VPN service and it worked! I am running a Linux box, so I had to route the DNS via VPN manually but luckily OpenVPN has a script that does that out of the box. So far, I like the service.
