CrypticVPN Review & Test 2024 — Read This Before Buying

Our Score: 6.0/10
Ranked 203rd out of 305 VPNs

CrypticVPN was founded in 2012; it was recently bought by a new owner and has undergone some changes, with more planned, including a new client. The VPN operates out of Amsterdam and focuses on security and speed. It has a well-organized website that’s easy to navigate, and on the whole, this ease of use continues into the VPN itself. But is it up to scratch with a premium vendor? Let's find out.

First off, we were disappointed to note that CrypticVPN cannot unblock Netflix. Instead, if streaming is a priority for you, we recommend looking elsewhere.

The VPN offers a user-friendly service that requires little technical knowledge to get started. However, it also offers features like port forwarding that are great for those who want a more customizable service.

Signing up to the service is easy and the vendor accepts anonymous payment options, meaning you need to hand over very few details in order to get started. The VPN can be used on Windows, OSX, and Linux operating systems; however, a dedicated client only currently exists for Windows.

We did initially have some issues getting the VPN to connect, however, this was partly due to user error. A quick read of the FAQs solved the issue and allowed us to get online with the VPN.

Connections all use the OpenVPN tunneling protocol with the option of UDP 1194 or TCP 443, and are secured with 2048-bit encryption. While this gives you a secure connection, it does make your VPN traffic hard to hide from active VPN screeners like Netflix.

CrypticVPN currently has servers in 16 locations across 12 countries, with multiple locations in the United States and the UK. While the network is quite small, connection speeds are excellent, and we experienced no lagging when streaming YouTube and minimal wait times when loading pages.

However, there are a few issues with CrypticVPN connections. Firstly, access to geoblocked websites and services is very limited. We were unable to create a successful connection to Netflix in any region, and were similarly unable to access the BBC iPlayer from a UK server. This was disappointing since Netflix is listed on the vendor’s website as one of the services that can be accessed. If you're looking for a VPN that can unblock Netflix and BBC iPlayer, take a look at the best VPNs for Netflix.

The second problem we encountered was that our connections did not consistently align with the chosen server locations. For instance, when selecting servers in Australia, we discovered that the IP address was actually located in the US. Similarly, when attempting to connect to the UK, the IP locator we used displayed uncertainty regarding whether we were connected to India, the US, or the UK.

However, in the interest of fairness, we should note that other connection tests showed that we were connected to our chosen destinations, and once connected, we experienced no further difficulties.

Overall, for general surfing at good speeds and with security, CrypticVPN is a great choice, particularly with its no-logs policy and anonymous payment options. However, if you are looking for a VPN specifically for bypassing geoblocks on sites like Netflix, then it is not going suit your needs. Instead, we recommend you take a look at ExpressVPN.

Installation & Apps

CrypticVPN is straightforward to install and very easy to use. To get started, simply choose the package that best suits your needs and create your account. Once you’ve completed that process, log in to the client area and make a note of your VPN username and password, as these are different from the ones you used to set up your account.

Click on the Download tab and choose the right download for your device. There is a client for Windows and a separate OpenVPN Config download if needed. You can also choose to download a Port Listener Tool if you are operating Windows.

We tested the VPN on Windows and found that the OpenVPN setup option opened a second Installation Wizard. Let this process finish before logging in.

To get connected, enter your VPN username and password, choose a server and a port, and click Connect.

You can check the status of any server by clicking on the Status tab. You can also route your connection through a specific URL by clicking on the Route tab.

CrypticVPN offers four subscription packages: 2 days, 1 month, 1 year, and lifetime. The cost of each package is low compared to other VPNs that offer similar features and connection quality. The yearly subscription saves you around 60% off the cost of renewing monthly for the same period of time; current savings with the lifetime plan are even more extraordinary.

CrypticVPN does not offer a free trial or money-back guarantee. The provider believes that its website and customer testimonials provide enough evidence of its quality. The vendor also believes that not offering a money-back guarantee helps to prevent fraud. But it does offer a 2-day package at an extremely low cost, so you can try it at very little financial risk.

However, it should be noted that you cannot use PayPal to pay for the 2-day package. Instead, you need to use either one of the anonymous payment methods that the vendor offers or Perfect Money. All other packages can be paid for using all available methods – PayPal, BTC, ETH, LTC, and Perfect Money.

Reliability & Support

6.8

After a few false starts that were as much user error as they were issues with setting up the VPN, CrypticVPN created successful connections to several different servers in different locations.

The only problem we found was that the location we were connected to was not always the one we had chosen. On trying to connect to Australia, we found ourselves connected to an IP address in the USA. On a different occasion, we tried to connect to the UK and the IP locator didn’t seem sure whether we were in India, the US, or the UK.

There are reasons outside of the VPN why this might occur, including errors in the locator, but it is something to be aware of.

CrypticVPN offers a well-organized and easy-to-follow FAQ page on its website. The answers it provides are detailed but written in plain English, making them easy to understand. The FAQs cover setup guides and troubleshooting as well as more general questions.

Customer support can be accessed via email and, once you sign up, through a ticketing system as well. Response times are excellent (within the hour on most occasions) and each member of the customer support team that we engaged with was helpful and provided full, clear answers.

CrypticVPN has its own online forum that has a team member on hand to help, as well as other users. The forum seems to be well used and had over 60 users online and active when we signed up. The vendor also has a limited social media presence. Its Facebook messenger is monitored and responded to, but the page itself has not been updated since April.

We did ask the provider about the Facebook page. The owner stated that since taking over the company, they had not seen Facebook as a key marketing stream, and so had chosen not to focus their efforts there. They added that this may change in the future, however.

The Bottom Line

Great for surfing securely, not great for Netflix

CrypticVPN is a relatively new VPN with a lot to offer and a great deal of potential. It is clearly looking to improve the service and is looking to offer new clients. Currently, its features are limited, and it only offers OpenVPN, which limits your access to geo-restricted services, including Netflix. However, speed and security, along with a strong no-logging policy, give it a great starting position on which to build.

  • Excellent speeds and unlimited bandwidth
  • 2048-bit encryption
  • Anonymous payment options
  • Port forwarding
  • No-logging policy
