TunnelBear Review 2024: Free Plan, but Is It Good and Safe?

Our Score: 9.0/10
Ranked 11th out of 305 VPNs
Lawrence Wachira Updated on 28th March 2024 Fact-checked by Matthew Amos Senior Writer

TunnelBear is one of the most beginner-friendly VPNs, offering a solid free version. Despite its adorable design, it’s also renowned for its security and privacy features. But can you truly rely on this lighthearted VPN to protect you the way the best providers can?

After extensive tests, I can confirm that TunnelBear is an excellent VPN with great potential. It’s straightforward to use, delivers impressive speeds on most servers, and works well for gaming and torrenting. Unfortunately, the free plan is just too limited. The lack of live chat support and a reliable money-back guarantee prevents it from being among the best.

Streaming — The Premium Option is Good for Streaming

8.4

Our international team could securely stream their local platforms with TunnelBear’s paid version. The streaming quality was excellent too.

While the free version works fine, the data limits make it impractical for streaming. The 2GB per month limit is a significant increase from the 500MB it once offered, but it still gets used up way too quickly with today’s high bandwidth streams.

While you can theoretically use TunnelBear to watch geo-restricted content, you should know this is copyright infringement. My teammates only connected to servers in their respective countries while testing.

Important. Neither I nor my team condone breaking copyright laws. TunnelBear claims never to view your browsing activities. This means you’ll be solely responsible for how you use it. We urge you to use TunnelBear lawfully and never to break the T&Cs of any streaming platform you engage with.

Works With: ITVX, Amazon Prime Video, Max, ESPN, Peacock, Disney+, and Netflix

My colleague in the UK reported a smooth streaming experience with ITVX, even when skipping to different parts of the titles she viewed.

A screenshot of ITV streaming Celebrity Big Brother while connected to TunnelBear's UK serverVideos loaded nearly instantly and there was no buffering

A colleague in the US also had no issue streaming on several local platforms. He watched Five Nights at Freddy’s on Amazon Prime Video, Barbie on Max, and several videos on ESPN. All the videos quickly loaded and attained high quality almost immediately.

A screenshot of Peacock streaming Pinkfong Sing-Along Movie 2: Wonderstart Concert while connected to TunnelBear's US serverThe same connection gave our US tester great quality on Disney+

He could also securely watch his local American Netflix library on the first attempt. A teammate in the UK also reported a similar experience watching her local libraries. It was a bit of a hassle for our correspondent in Tokyo to watch Netflix Japan, but he finally succeeded in watching Netflix Originals. This is a version of the site that has Netflix's own shows and movies.

Doesn’t Work With: BBC iPlayer and Hulu

Unfortunately, the UK connection didn’t let my colleague securely load any videos on BBC iPlayer from her location in Richmond, London.

Hulu also successfully identified VPN use by our US correspondent.

A screenshot showing TunnelBear failed to work with HuluHulu uses robust anti-VPN technology, so it was no surprise

Despite our US tester trying various servers and protocols and even enabling GhostBear, the outcome was consistently the same. So, TunnelBear isn’t perfect in this category. To get a VPN that’s more likely to work with all platforms offered where you live, check out our list of the best VPNs for streaming.

Speed — Excellent Speeds on Nearby Servers

8.8

TunnelBear has great speeds on local servers, but it’s not as fast on distant ones. A 10-20% speed dip on short-distance servers is normal for top VPNs, and TunnelBear was right in this sweet spot, which impressed me.

All of our tests were done from the same UK location and connection, with the fastest protocol (WireGuard in this case) to provide a comprehensive view of its overall performance. To make sure the results are fair, our speed expert ran around 10 tests per server, and the average outcomes are presented below.

Although we speed-tested servers across its global network, we advise you only to connect to local ones while streaming. As previously stated, we oppose using TunnelBear in a manner that infringes upon the T&Cs of streaming services.

A screenshot showing TunnelBear's speed results for the paid version across servers in Europe, North America, Asia, and OceaniaIt reduced our speeds by 8% on nearby servers and 40% on distant ones

To get the fastest connection, you can use the Fastest Tunnel feature. It connects you to the best server for your location.

A screenshot of Ookla speed tests done while connected to TunnelBear's UK server and with no VPN connectedNearby servers also performed well, with no more than a 14% decrease

The drop was most significant on its Brazil servers (8,000km away). It decreased our tester’s speed by 66.6%. Such a drop can make even regular browsing problematic. Unfortunately, it was difficult to link the slowdown to potential overcrowding since the VPN doesn't display latency or how busy its servers are.

A screenshot showing TunnelBear's speeds for the free version across servers in Europe, North America, Asia, Middle East, Africa, South America, and OceaniaMost of the same servers were retested to ensure a fair comparison

In the past, this VPN’s poor speeds were one of its main drawbacks. However, TunnelBear has made some significant improvements in this area. It’s one of the fastest VPNs we’ve tested on nearby servers. While its long-distance speeds aren’t bad on most servers, I could easily see it becoming one of the fastest VPNs.

Gaming — Smooth Sessions on Local Servers

9.4

I had a great experience playing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) and World of Tanks (WoT) with TunnelBear. The connection was stable, with no noticeable delays between my keyboard inputs and the in-game responses. This was largely due to the Fastest option delivering a low ping of 67ms (you’ll want it below 85ms while gaming).

A screenshot showing playing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive while connected to TunnelBear's fastest serverFor the best gaming experience, choose a local or nearby server

The free version performed well in my tests, though I noted slightly higher latency on the servers I tested. However, the real deal-breaker for avid gamers is the 2GB data cap. You’ll be lucky to get through a couple matches with those limits.

Ping rates on distant servers aren’t as good for smooth gameplay. My latency was over 330 on servers in Singapore and Australia, which caused noticeable lag while playing. However, that’s pretty common. I haven’t found any VPNs that give you great ping results at those distances, so TunnelBear is super impressive in this area.

Server Network — 5,000 Servers in 47 Countries

8.8

TunnelBear offers a decent network and lets you use almost all its servers for free. Most of them are in Europe and North America (Canada, the US, and Mexico). However, in Africa, servers are limited to just 3 countries. There are also city-specific servers in the US and Canada.

A screenshot showing city-level servers aren't available with TunnelBear's free planThis means you can’t pick a server closest to you to get the best speeds

All its servers are physically located in their respective countries, so there aren’t any virtual servers. TunnelBear also owns all of its servers, which is great for privacy because there’s no third-party involvement.

The VPN lacks dedicated IPs and memory-erasing servers, which can contribute to extra safety. Although the absence of RAM-based servers means the TunnelBear might retain data, its own DNS servers help keep your browsing safe. I'll delve into the specifics of private DNS in the next section.

The only downside is it can take a while to connect to TunnelBear's servers. For instance, while ExpressVPN connects in under 4 seconds, TunnelBear often makes me wait more than 10 seconds. I also noticed that switching from a free account to a paid one sometimes caused connection problems. However, switching to a different server, as well as closing and opening the app solved this issue.

Security — Solid Security to Keep You Safe Online

9.8

Even though it doesn’t have as many features as the top VPNs, TunnelBear is safe to use. It passed all of my leak tests.

A screenshot showing TunnelBear passed DNS, IP leak, and WebRTC testsThese tests showed no IP, DNS, or WebRTC leaks across the network

I also like that it offers a free ad-blocker as a Chrome browser extension. However, this isn’t technically a part of the VPN (you download it separately). Plus, I wish TunnelBear hadn't stopped supporting RememBear (its password manager).

Encryption

TunnelBear uses the AES-256 encryption level, the same technology governments use to secure their files, across its free and paid versions. The VPN also protects every server with full disk encryption, malware and intrusion scans, and intrusion protection techniques to ensure your online activity remains confidential.

GhostBear

This feature makes it easier to use the VPN on restrictive networks, like school and work. By enabling GhostBear, you can make your encrypted data look more like regular traffic, so you’re less likely to be blocked. The feature can only be enabled if you’re using the OpenVPN protocol, and it’s not available on iOS.

Security Protocols

TunnelBear uses the safest available security protocols. It automatically picks a protocol for you, but you can also choose. These are your options:

  • OpenVPN. The industry-leading open-source protocol that’s currently regarded as the safest VPN tunnel. It’s the only protocol that works with GhostBear and TCP Override (which can stabilize your connection).
  • IKEv2. This is one of the most popular security protocols, and it comes with an auto-connect feature. It’s very useful on mobile devices, as it can automatically resume your VPN connection when you switch between networks.
  • WireGuard. It provides the best balance between speed and security.

The table below shows the protocols available on each device:

Auto OpenVPN IKEv2 WireGuard IPSec
Windows
Mac
iOS
Android

VigilantBear (Kill Switch)

This feature stops your internet traffic if the VPN suddenly disconnects. For example, when you switch servers or your device goes into sleep mode, you might get disconnected. So, to prevent data leaks, I recommend turning on VigilantBear in the app’s connection settings. It’s available on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS.

Encrypted Client Hello (ECH)

ECH helps you reach the TunnelBear site on restricted networks. This is an updated version of its Encrypted Server Name Indicator (ESNI) feature (that it still uses as well). Basically, some countries may use DNS-level blocking to prevent you from accessing TunnelBear’s website. ECH uses encryption to help you avoid these blocks. It’s currently only supported on Android devices, but a version for Windows is being worked on.

SplitBear

This feature lets you route selected traffic through TunnelBear’s secure tunnel. I use it to make bank transfers over a standard connection while keeping the rest of my internet activities secured by the VPN. It's accessible on both desktop and mobile apps.

Private DNS Servers

These servers safeguard your online activities by encrypting DNS queries, preventing ISPs and third parties from tracking your web visits. They also fortify against DNS leaks and diminish the risk of man-in-the-middle attacks, where hackers or snoops intercept and modify data in transit.

Privacy — Transparent With a Strict Zero-Logging Policy

9.6

TunnelBear only logs the minimum amount of data required for running the service, and it doesn’t share this information with anyone.

You can request access to your personal data and even its deletion. The VPN also regularly publishes transparency reports, which let you know any time information has been requested from TunnelBear (and that it’s never had anything to share).

Does TunnelBear Keep Logs? No

TunnelBear doesn’t log your browsing history, IP address, or connection timestamps. However, like most VPNs, it does log some technical data.

A screenshot showing TunnelBear doesn't holds on to sensitive information like IP addresses and DNS queries I appreciate Tunnelbear's clarity on recording some operational data

This may include your Twitter ID, OS version, the TunnelBear app version you use, if you’ve been active this month (1 or 0), and how much data you’ve used in a month. Operational events like creating an account, making a payment, or upgrading are also logged. This makes it possible to discover that you’re a TunnelBear user, but no one can see what you’re doing while connected to its servers.

Was TunnelBear Audited? Yes

TunnelBear has undergone multiple independent security reviews since 2016, all conducted by Cure53, a reputable German cybersecurity firm. The VPN publishes these yearly reports on its website and uses them to improve its security and privacy practices. This commitment shows TunnelBear’s steadfast focus on safeguarding your digital privacy.

Based in Canada

With its headquarters in Toronto, Canada, TunnelBear is subject to the 5 Eyes Agreement. This is a group of countries that have agreed to share their citizens' online data. That means the company must not only surrender your data to authorities upon request but also make it accessible to all participating countries.

TunnelBear’s acquisition by the US antivirus software company McAfee also means that the VPN is now subject to US laws. However, you don't have to worry, as the VPN doesn’t log any data that could compromise your online privacy.

Does TunnelBear Work in China? Maybe

While the GhostBear feature aims to boost the VPN’s performance in countries with strict censorship and VPN regulations, the support staff can't guarantee that TunnelBear will work for you while in China.

A screenshot showing TunnelBear's support team confirming the VPN may work in ChinaTunnelBear also confirmed that it no longer supports connections from India

China constantly blocks VPNs in the country, but there have been no publicly reported cases of the government pursuing individuals for using VPNs. We urge you to familiarize yourself with the country's laws to avoid legal repercussions. If you decide to use a VPN there, check out one of these providers that have been proven to work in China.

Torrenting — Fast, but Restricted to a Few Servers

8.0

TunnelBear only allows P2P traffic on specific servers. These are in Canada, the US, the UK, Romania, the Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden. My tests on tunnel locations in Kenya, South Africa, France, and Singapore verified this restriction. Downloads were also not possible with the free servers. To download on a wider variety of servers, check out our top VPN picks for torrenting.

The VPN let me download a 1.1 GB file in 26 minutes. Without a VPN, it took 28 minutes to download the same file. This is a great result, given that all the servers the VPN recommended for torrenting are 5,000+ km away from my location.

Torrenting is legal in most countries, but downloading copyrighted files isn’t. To remain within the boundaries of the law, I recommend limiting yourself to torrents that are in the public domain.

Installation & Apps

9.2

Installation & Apps — Intuitive Apps Compatible With Popular Operating Systems

TunnelBear is easy to install and use, making it a good choice for beginners. However, it still covers all the essentials. Plus, its entire website and apps are loaded with adorable bear puns.

A screenshot showing TunnelBear's Windows app app has a bear-themed mapI like that it can be minimized to just a toggle switch and server selection screen

The free app looks the same as the premium version. The only difference is it shows how much free data you have left, which I appreciate. I’ve been caught by surprise running out of data with other VPNs that don’t offer this great feature.

Setup & Installation

I successfully installed TunnelBear within seconds on every device I tested.

A screenshot showing TunnelBear's download page along with the compatible devicesMobile apps can be found on the App or Play Store

All the apps loaded just as quickly as those of other popular VPNs.

Device Compatibility

It has native apps for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. Since TunnelBear is competitive with the top VPNs, I expected it to at least support routers and Android TVs. Unfortunately, it doesn’t.

I’m also a little frustrated that there's no easy way to connect smart TVs, streaming devices (like Rokus, Apple TV, and Firestick), or game consoles.

Desktop — Apps for Windows and Mac

TunnelBear’s desktop apps are simple and user-friendly, and there are only slight aesthetic differences. I really liked that there are question marks next to each feature that link you to helpful articles from the TunnelBear site.

There’s no native app for Linux, and it provides limited support for this platform (manual configurations). To find a full-featured app, you can read our list of secure VPNs for Linux.

Android and iPhone (iOS)

Mobile apps closely resemble the desktop versions, but have fewer settings. For example, neither has the TCP Override feature. The Android app has GhostBear, which is missing in the iOS app. On the other hand, the iOS app includes two extra protocols that aren't on the Android app.

You'll need to join TunnelBear's Telegram channel to set up the VPN on Android devices without the Play Store. Top VPNs allow for a direct APK download from their websites, so I hope TunnelBear will follow suit soon.

Apps for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox

TunnelBear’s browser extensions are very simple. You can only pick servers and connect or disconnect. There are no additional security settings. To stay fully protected, I recommend avoiding browser extensions and installing apps that can protect your entire device and not only your browser traffic.

Simultaneous Device Connections

All TunnelBear plans support unlimited device connections. This is great, as most premium VPNs can only be used on up to 5 devices at the same time. I tested the regular (Unlimited) plan by playing World of Tanks on my laptop while 5 family members also used TunnelBear. Even with all of us connected simultaneously, my game ran smoothly without any issues.

Pricing

9.3
3 Years
$ 3.33 / month per month
1 Year
$ 4.99 / month per month
1 Month
$ 9.99 / month per month

Pricing — Affordable, and a Decent Free Option

To get more data than the free 2GB, the VPN has 3 plans to choose from. It also offers Unlimited and Teams accounts. With the former, you get a regular subscription for personal use. It comes with unlimited bandwidth and device connections, plus you get access to all servers and security features.

The free plan's data cap limits what you can do but is sufficient to provide a glimpse of the paid version's capabilities. It's a step up from the original 500MB cap, and the VPN increased it to remove the necessity for data bonuses, like promotional tweets.

I recommend choosing the 3-year plan because it offers the best value for money, starting at $3.33/month. However, if you want to use the VPN for only a short period, the 1-month subscription might be a more suitable option.

The Teams option is great for businesses and organizations, as it allows you to add and remove which users you’re sharing a subscription with. You can also grant certain members admin privileges. However, this is a bit more expensive than the regular (Unlimited) subscription. I also appreciate that you can try TunnelBear's Teams plan free for 7 days.

The VPN only issues refunds on a case-by-case basis. Since I ran into some connectivity issues, I decided to test the waters by mentioning them to support my request. I expected the refund process to be more difficult than with VPNs that offer a standard money-back guarantee, but it was actually very easy.

A screenshot showing TunnelBear offer refunds, albeit on a case-by-case basisMy request got the green light in just an hour

However, I was disappointed that you can only pay with Visa, Mastercard, or American Express. There’s no way to purchase TunnelBear with PayPal or cryptocurrency.

Reliability & Support

7.8

Reliability and Support — Good, but There’s No Live Chat

There’s no 24/7 live chat support. TunnelBear is among the best VPNs I’ve reviewed, so this surprised me. The VPN appears so friendly with all the bears, so I was expecting approachable support agents that are always there for you. However, this wasn’t the case.

You can only contact the support team by filling out a website form. The company commits to addressing all inquiries through its ticketing system within a 48-hour window. I received detailed responses within a timeframe of 1 to 30 hours.

A screenshot showing TunnelBear's support team guidance to the best servers for P2P sharingTunnelBear also enriched my torrenting experience by sharing extra tips

Useful troubleshooting guides and interesting blogs are also available on the VPN’s website. For example, the comprehensive article on ECH demystified the technology for me. Overall, TunnelBear VPN just needs to facilitate easier ways to get a hold of its support agents to rival top VPNs in the market.

The Bottom Line

Final Verdict — Excellent Overall Service With a Few Minor Flaws

TunnelBear offers a simple, no-hassle service with excellent speeds, a strict no-logs policy, and robust security features. You can use both its free and paid version on unlimited devices simultaneously. It has servers all around the world, so it’s easy to find a secure server for gaming, torrenting, or browsing near you.

There are a couple of downsides, though. Unlike most of its competitors, TunnelBear doesn’t have 24/7 live chat support or a reliable money-back guarantee.

In a nutshell, TunnelBear is a great beginner VPN, but it might not be the best option for experienced users due to its lack of customization options. In any case, there’s a free version you can use to test the VPN before commiting to a paid subscription.

OK for PC & Android, no firesticks

The PC and tablet versions of the paid version differ. Ghost Bear is on all versions, but Vigilant bear is PC only. Tried on an older Samsung tablet running kit kat, and a slightly newer one using marshmellow. I Will NOT install it on any of my android phones (they are for work), but I'm confident about them working on 7.1.1 up. Why no fire tv stick version? Have to use a different VPN or cast to it from a tablet that will run it. Their devs should look harder at the noob market they are aimed at, so get cracking develop one soon. In Canada, where TB is based, it's not for Netflix, but fine for IPTV and related stuff. The principal ISP's here (Bell, Rogers, Telus, Shaw) have become more aggressive blocking things lately, so a VPN is a must now. Throughput isn't horrible on a cheap 15/1 line, (the average is around 12/.9 using an in Canada server out of Vancouver) so it's mid-pack.

DANGEROUS for CANADIANS

I live in the GTA, everything was fine "until" I installed TunnelBear on one of my 7 devices, now I can no longer watch any USA TV stations on line on any of my other 6 devices, this company is scum, they hid something in there that disabled all my other devices unless I buy their VPN, well, not going to buy their garbage, can't believe how much it slowed my device, I would rather wipe all my drives than give TunnelBear one cent!
