ZoogVPN Review 2024 — Keep This in Mind Before Buying

Our Score: 6.8/10
Ranked 127th out of 299 VPNs
Guy Fawkes Published on 1st February 2024 Anonymous Cybersecurity Experts

Born in 2013, ZoogVPN is small provider that’s constantly growing to fulfil more user needs and overcome online restrictions as well as security threats.

ZoogVPN is a great choice if you want to unblock Netflix. Its US-based servers can bypass geo-restrictions and it's fast enough to stream in high definition.

ZoogVPN isn’t equipped with the advanced features and encryption levels that come with top-ranked VPNs such as ExpressVPN or IPVanish. However, it does offer a basic VPN service with extra perks at cheap prices, making it a good choice for beginners or for people on the go. Let’s see what ZoogVPN has to offer.

Formerly based in the Isle of Man which complies with the UK’s data retention laws, ZoogVPN is now registered in the more privacy-friendly Greece.

Accordingly, ZoogVPN follows a strict no logging policy. It doesn’t keep records of your online activity, IP address, or your log-in/log-out sessions. However, it does store the email address you provide, as well as bandwidth usage.

While ZoogVPN has a small network of 30 servers spread across 21 countries, it offers unlimited bandwidth for paid subscribers. It will let you access some restricted services such as Netflix US, Hulu, iTV, and Amazon Video. However, you can’t use it to unblock BBC iPlayer and it doesn’t work in heavily restricted countries like China and Egypt.

Security is pretty basic with ZoogVPN and doesn’t stand out. Although it uses strong 256-bit encryption and adopts several protocols like OpenVPN, IKEv2, L2TP, and PPTP, ZoogVPN falls short on a few important features, such as a kill switch, which is only available in their Mac client.

You won’t find advanced features such as Double VPN or split tunneling here, but all ZoogVPN apps have DNS leak protection. There are client apps for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. It’s also compatible with Linux, Chromebook, and routers. The Windows and Android apps run OpenVPN by default, while the Mac and iOS apps use IKEv2 as their default protocol. However, you can manually configure other protocols such as L2TP and PPTP.

With 5 simultaneous connections, you can run ZoogVPN on multiple devices at the same time. In addition, if you’re into torrenting, P2P is permitted on specific servers which are marked with “P2P" icon.

As previously mentioned, ZoogVPN isn’t a bad choice for beginners and casual users, but it won’t impress you if you’re a pro. It offers a free plan, decent features, and excellent live chat support.

However, if you’re an advanced user and looking for a more sophisticated and well-rounded VPN that can unblock Netflix and falls within the same price range, we recommend CyberGhost. For even more options, check the best VPNs overall in the market today.

Installation & Apps

6.8

Installing the ZoogVPN application is a piece of cake. Just download the installer from the website and launch it. The rest pretty much takes care of itself and in no time.

Once the app is installed, it will automatically open and ask you to log in with your ZoogVPN credentials. Enter your credentials and click to check the checkbox labeled “Remember Me" so you don’t have to log in every time you launch the app. For some reason, we had to enter our credentials multiple times until we were able to log in.

The client interface is very simple and straightforward, but it isn’t attractive at all. You can either click on “Connect" to let the app automatically select the most suitable server for you, or you can click on the arrow at the bottom of the app to open the list of available servers and manually select a server.

The settings menu is limited. However, you can choose between TCP or UDP protocols for your OpenVPN connection.

Another disadvantage of the app is that every time you click to minimize it, it doesn’t minimize and you have to open it again from the icon tray. Other than that, it’s pretty simple. Beginners will certainly find it very easy to navigate.

ZoogVPN comes in four different plans: a free plan, a monthly plan, a semi-annual plan (6 months), and a yearly plan. As usual, the free plan is limited compared to paid subscriptions.

With the free plan, you only get access to 3 VPN servers. You can use ZoogVPN on only 1 device, and you get 2GB of monthly bandwidth. You also get limited P2P support, 128-bit encryption with limited protocols, and limited access to web content.

On the other hand, with the paid subscriptions, you get access to the entire server network, along with unlimited bandwidth, full P2P support, 256-bit encryption with all VPN protocols as well as Socks5 proxy, and access to more restricted web content. You can use ZoogVPN on up to 5 devices simultaneously.

The only difference between the paid subscriptions is the plan duration and, of course, the yearly plan comes at the lowest average monthly cost.

ZoogVPN also accepts a wide range of payment methods such as credit/debit cards, Paymentwall, JCB, UnionPay, PayPal, and Bitcoin.

The refund policy is the tricky part. ZoogVPN offers a 7-day money-back guarantee. However, you’re eligible for a full refund only if you use under 2GB of bandwidth, and you must email the support team with the reason for cancellation. So, it’s a good idea to read their refund policy before committing to a subscription.

Reliability & Support

7.4

ZoogVPN offers you three support channels: 24/7 live chat, ticket support, and an FAQ section. We had a few questions in mind, so we started firing them through the live chat and support ticket system to test them. The live chat responded instantly and the agent we spoke to answered all our questions friendly and professionally.

After over 24 hours, we hadn’t received a reply from the email support team. There wasn’t even an automated reply to our email to let us know when they’re going to get back to us.

We took a look around the FAQ section. While it does have answers to basic queries, we didn’t find it comprehensive. All in all, if it weren’t for the live chat, we would still be looking for answers.

The Bottom Line

A growing VPN that’s good for beginners and worth a try

ZoogVPN has made significant progress since our previous review. It has relocated to Greece, a country known for prioritizing privacy. The service now provides outstanding 24/7 live chat support and grants access to Netflix US and a few other geo-restricted platforms. The pricing is affordable, and you can enjoy Unlimited simultaneous connections across major devices. However, ZoogVPN still falls short in terms of essential security features like a kill switch, and its server network remains limited. Furthermore, the client apps offered by ZoogVPN are overly simplistic and lack advanced functionalities.

Good VPN

Zoogvpn is a good vpn. There is incorrect information in the review: 1. VPN works with Netflix. 2. Customer service responds to emails very quickly (I claim that their customer service is the fastest of all VPNs - from 5 to 25 minutes of waiting. Excellent). 3. Zoogvpn currently has around 70 locations with servers. 4. The right to a full refund is not if you use less than 2 GB of bandwidth but 10 GB. 5. Zoogvpn can be installed on an unlimited number of devices. 6. Zoogvpn has a Kill switch in its apps. As a satisfied user of Zoogvpn, please correct the review because you are informing readers incorrectly. Thank you.

    No privacy, No security

This VPN is asking your name, e-mail, etc :))) and uses cross-site trackers. No anonymous registration, no anonymous payment options. No Browser extensions. ZoogVPN Privacy Policy: "we will only collect, store and process your personal data only for as long as is necessary (in connection with the purpose for which we have collected it)" Do you really think this ZoogVPN protects your privacy? I don't think so ;)

Bad service, useless for streaming, thieving crooks

Bought a 'lifetime' subscription a few years ago. OK, 1st year. Then, they have restricted servers to almost nill and want more money to get them back! Doesn't work with Disney+, BBC, IP geolocation avoidance doesn't even work with YouTube! VPN obfuscation renders the service totally unusable..no pages ever load.
