5 Best VPNs for Spectrum (2024): Fast, Secure, & Reliable

Sheharyar Zaheer Updated on 14th August 2024 Fact-checked by Matthew Amos Cybersecurity Researcher

Speed throttling can be a big problem when you use Spectrum Internet. This can make torrenting extremely time-consuming. Spectrum can also monitor and store your personal information. It even detects and blocks many VPNs that can help you solve these issues.

After testing 63 VPNs, we shortlisted the best VPNs to use with Spectrum and prevent ISP throttling issues. They all have high-speed US servers that can securely access Spectrum TV from anywhere. They also support torrenting and have robust security features to protect your online privacy. In addition, they are easy to use and compatible with a wide range of routers.

My top Spectrum VPN recommendation is ExpressVPN. It keeps you safe online with military-grade encryption and has a global network of fast servers to stream uninterrupted. ExpressVPN also won't get blocked since it automatically conceals VPN traffic and regular HTTPS traffic with obfuscation. You can try it risk-free, as all plans are supported by a 30-day money-back guarantee. Editor's Note: Transparency is one of our core values at vpnMentor, so you should know we are in the same ownership group as ExpressVPN. However, this does not affect our review process.

Best VPNs for Spectrum — Full Analysis (Updated in 2024)

1. ExpressVPN — Obfuscated Servers and Fast Speeds to Bypass Spectrum Speed Throttling

Best Feature Automatically hides VPN traffic to avoid slowdowns on Spectrum networks
Server Network 3,000 servers in 105 countries, including 24 US locations
Device Connections Protect up to 8 devices simultaneously with one subscription
Works With Spectrum TV, Netflix, Hulu, Max, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, and more
Editor's Note: Transparency is one of our core values at vpnMentor, so you should know we are in the same ownership group as ExpressVPN. However, this does not affect our review process.

ExpressVPN is the fastest VPN we tested, making it an ideal option for Spectrum. Most premium VPNs slow down your speed by 10 to 20% on short distances. We only experienced a 4% average speed drop testing ExpressVPN's servers in the US. This makes it possible to stream movies and TV shows on Spectrum TV in HD from anywhere. One of the primary reasons for its fast speeds is its self-developed Lightway protocol, designed with fewer lines of code to move data faster.

Screenshot showing speeds of ExpressVPN on London and Los Angeles serversAll the servers we tested only took a couple of seconds to connect

Spectrum won't be able to block ExpressVPN, thanks to automatic obfuscation on all servers. Obfuscation makes your VPN traffic look like normal internet traffic, minimizing the chances of getting detected. This also enables you to use the VPN on restricted networks, like school and work. ExpressVPN also keeps your private on Spectrum with military-grade AES-256 encryption, IP/DNS leak protection, and a kill switch (Network Lock).

I like that ExpressVPN provides a native router app for easy installation and use. Plus, it supports manual configuration for an even more comprehensive range of routers. Its website has step-by-step guides for various router models — I had it installed on my Netgear router within 10 minutes. It also sells a custom router called Aircove, which comes pre-installed with ExpressVPN.

The only downside is subscriptions are a bit expensive, starting at $4.99/month. However, ExpressVPN offers regular discounts throughout the year to help you save. I got 61% off and 3 extra months of free usage on the long-term plan. In addition, all options are backed with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try ExpressVPN risk-free.

Useful Features

  • TrustedServer Technology. On top of ExpressVPN's proven no-logs policy, it uses RAM-based servers that are wiped clean with every reboot, further minimizing any data risks. It even has a bug bounty program with an award of $100,000 for anyone who can find security issues with TrustedServer.
  • Private DNS. ExpressVPN operates its own DNS servers for added privacy, preventing third parties from viewing your personal information.
  • Threat Manager. This feature blocks malware and harmful trackers and acts as an ad blocker. It also offers parental controls to block adult content, a great option if you have children.
  • P2P Support. All of its servers support torrenting, so you won’t have to do any searching for optimized locations. ExpressVPN is one of the best VPNs for torrenting. Connect to a nearby server for the best speeds.
ExpressVPN Offer December 2024: For a limited time only, you can get an ExpressVPN subscription for up to 61% off! Don't miss out!

2. CyberGhost — Optimized Servers for Uninterrupted Torrenting and Streaming on Spectrum

Best Feature Find and connect to an optimized server in just 2 clicks
Server Network 11,690 servers in 100 countries, including 11 locations in the US
Device Connections Connect up to 7 devices at the same time without a drop in performance
Works With Spectrum TV, Netflix, Hulu, Max, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, and more
Editor's Note: Transparency is one of our core values at vpnMentor, so you should know we are in the same ownership group as CyberGhost VPN. However, this does not affect our review process.

CyberGhost's dedicated servers make it easy to securely stream and torrent from anywhere. With its torrenting-optimized servers, you can download large files on Spectrum without delays caused by ISP-imposed restrictions. The VPN even displays the distance of each server from your location. During our tests, it took only 3 minutes to torrent a 5GB file (our base speed of 256.57Mbps dropped only slightly to 236.93Mbps).

Screenshot showing the app interface of CyberGhost with streaming servers displayedClick on the star next to a server to add it to your favorites

Its specialty servers and intuitive app makes CyberGhost one of my favorite VPNs for beginners. Simply expand the app to find a list of optimized servers. The gaming servers (available on Windows) are created to minimize lag while keeping you safe from online threats. We also had no problem streaming on Netflix and Hulu using the streaming servers.

Like ExpressVPN, CyberGhost uses AES 256-bit encryption to secure your Spectrum connection. For the best performance, you can also choose from several protocols (OpenVPN, IKEv2, WireGuard, L2TP/IPSec). However, WireGuard consistently provided us with the best speeds during testing. Its Content Block feature also prevents malware, ads, and trackers from harming your devices.

One small con is the expensive monthly plan with a short refund period. Luckily, a long-term plan offers great value at only $2.19/month and includes an extended 45-day money-back guarantee to test it for free. I tested the refund policy by canceling via 24/7 live chat and got my money returned within the week.

Useful Features

  • WiFi protection. This feature lets you set up CyberGhost to automatically connect whenever you activate your Spectrum network, so your data is always protected. It can also be customized to protect your device automatically whenever you use an unsecured network.
  • Router support. CyberGhost is compatible with a wide range of available routers. Although it doesn’t offer any custom router app like ExpressVPN, the manual configurations are pretty straightforward.
  • NoSpy servers. For even more advanced protection, you can upgrade to CyberGhost’s NoSpy servers, which are located inside its headquarters in Romania with additional physical security.
December 2024 Deal: CyberGhost is currently offering 84% off its most popular plan! Take advantage of this offer now and save more on your CyberGhost subscription.

3. Private Internet Access — Vast US Network to Safely Access Spectrum TV From Anywhere

Best Feature 53 US server locations to easily find one to stream Spectrum TV in HD
Server Network 29,650 servers in 91 countries to avoid slowdowns due to overcrowding
Device Connections Unlimited, so you can protect all your devices starting at only $2.19/month
Works With Spectrum TV, Netflix, Hulu, Max, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, and more
Editor's Note: Transparency is one of our core values at vpnMentor, so you should know we are in the same ownership group as Private Internet Access. However, this does not affect our review process.

PIA has the most US servers among all VPNs we tested, making it possible to securely access more Spectrum TV channels from anywhere without delays caused by server congestion. If one server is down, simply switch to another in the same location. We could also watch YouTube TV and Hulu in top quality during our tests. Our speeds on nearby servers were reduced by only 12%, even when streaming on multiple devices simultaneously.

You can improve your speeds by customizing your PIA connection. For example, lower your encryption level from 256-bit to 128-bit (with OpenVPN). Fewer layers of encryption provide better speeds overall. If your network is unstable, change the MTU size to Small packets. However, switch to Large for an optimal experience if your connection is reliable. Selecting Auto, PIA will automatically choose the best option.

Screenshot showing the app interface of PIA with Protocols settings open."Alternate Settings" can instantly give you new configurations

One drawback is that PIA is based in the US, which is a part of the intelligence-sharing treaties of the 5-Eyes Alliance. However, none of your data is collected or shared since PIA adheres to an independently audited and verified no-logs policy. The VPN also offers all the high-level security features you would expect but includes a customizable kill switch that blocks your internet connection unless you're connected to PIA.

All PIA plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try it without financial risk. The long-term plan is the cheapest at only $2.19/month.

Useful Features

  • Streaming servers. There are servers optimized for streaming, but unlike CyberGhost, these are location-based, for example, in the US, UK, Japan, and Australia. Just type "streaming" into the search bar to view the list.
  • Multi-protocol support. PIA offers both OpenVPN and WireGuard protocols, which are the industry’s leading connection options. Wireguard has better speeds, while OpenVPN is considered more secure.
  • Multi-Hop. This feature prevents VPN blocks with obfuscation by rerouting it through a SOCKS5 or Shadowsocks proxy based on your preference.
December 2024 Update: PIA doesn't usually have deals or discounts (it's already so affordable), but right now you can get a new subscription for a crazy 83% off!

4. NordVPN — Top-Notch Security To Protect Your Privacy on Spectrum

Best Feature Speciality servers for advanced protection and optimized torrenting on Spectrum
Server Network 6,800 servers in 113 countries, with 17 US locations for safely streaming Spectrum TV
Device Connections You can connect 10 devices simultaneously
Works With Spectrum TV, Netflix, Hulu, Max, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, and more

NordVPN keeps your online identity and activities anonymous on Spectrum with extra security features. Along with AES 256-bit encryption, it offers Perfect Forward Secrecy, which continually changes encryption keys to improve your security. You can even use its Double VPN servers to encrypt your data twice. We found no IP/DNS or WebRTC leaks testing several NordVPN servers.

Screenshot showing the app interface of NordVPN with Onion over VPN servers highlightedIt can increase security while torrenting with its P2P servers too

Switching on Threat Protection Pro scans all your downloaded files for malware and can block harmful ads and trackers. Just click the shield icon in the app. However, this feature is only available for Windows and MacOS. On Android and iOS, you get the basic Threat Protection, which lacks the file scanning feature.

I found the app easy to use, and especially liked the interactive map feature; you just drop a pin to connect to a server. One annoying thing about NordVPN is that its Windows app takes some time to load when starting. However, this wasn’t an issue, as the app worked seamlessly after the initial start-up.

You can get a long-term NordVPN plan at just $2.99/month. Plus, it offers a 30-day money-back guarantee to try it out before committing.

Useful Features

  • Dark Web Monitor. NordVPN continuously scans the dark web and sends you an alert whenever it finds any of your leaked credentials.
  • NordLynx protocol. NordVPN has also developed its own protocol based on Wireguard called Nordlynx, which is optimized to deliver fast speeds and stable VPN connections. Our speeds on US servers dropped by only 19%, testing it from the UK.

5. Surfshark — Unlimited Connections to Securely Use Spectrum on All Your Devices Simultaneously

Best Feature Protect all your devices at once without paying extra
Server Network 3,200 servers in 100 countries, including 22 US locations
Device Connections Unlimited simultaneous connections give you great value for money
Works With Spectrum TV, Netflix, Hulu, Max, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, and more

With Surfshark, you can secure all your devices and only pay $1.99/month. Short-term plans provide the same benefits but cost more. Although you can protect all your devices with a VPN by installing it on your router, this is more convenient and easy. During our tests, we connected 9 devices simultaneously, and our speed was reduced by only 11% on local servers, the same as when we used only one device.

Screenshot of Surfshark app's main page on MacTere's no learning curve when you switch devices

I like its NoBorders mode, which shows you a list of the best servers to use on restricted networks. Another feature to help you avoid Spectrum blocking your VPN connection is the IP rotator. This automatically changes your IP address at regular intervals, making it possible to securely access popular streaming platforms, like Disney+, from anywhere.

One small problem is that some of Surfshark’s servers took almost 15 seconds to connect. However, this was not a frequent occurrence, and the VPN worked great once connected. Like ExpressVPN and PIA, all Surfshark plans have a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try it out first.

Useful Features

  • 24/7 live chat. You can connect to a live agent at any time to get helpful support. Surfshark also boasts a comprehensive knowledge base.
  • CleanWeb. This feature blocks malware, trackers, and phishing attacks masked as ads. It can also stop ads inside apps and streaming platforms.

  1. Download a VPN. I recommend ExpressVPN for its fast US servers and automatic obfuscation to avoid speed throttling on Spectrum while keeping your online activities private.

FAQs on VPNs For Spectrum

Do Spectrum ISP routers support VPNs?

No, Spectrum does not directly support VPNs, but the whole network can be protected with a dual router setup. This involves connecting your Spectrum router to a VPN-supported router. However, if you don’t want a second router, your best bet is to simply connect a VPN to each device. The best VPNs protect multiple devices simultaneously. This only requires installing the VPN app and signing in, which is more convenient than configuring a VPN on your router.

Why is my VPN not working with Spectrum?

Spectrum actively blocks VPNs, so you’ll need one that’s powerful enough to bypass this technology. Unless your VPN uses the latest encryption and can hide your VPN traffic, it’s easy for Spectrum to block you. To effectively use a VPN with Spectrum, choose a VPN with obfuscation, like ExpressVPN. There are also some other things you can try with your current VPN:

  • Try switching to another server in the US. By choosing a VPN with a high server count, you’re more likely to find a server that works with Spectrum.
  • Delete cookies and cache on your browser and activate your kill switch and leak protection, if available.
  • Contact your VPN’s customer service and ask them for a solution to your problem.

Does Spectrum offer a VPN?

No, Spectrum does not offer a VPN. The company actually tries to prevent VPNs from being used on its network. Luckily, there are still some VPNs that work with Spectrum.

Can I use a free VPN with Spectrum?

Yes, but it's not recommended. This is because most free VPNs have few servers and don't have the technology to remain undetected on Spectrum. Plus, most free VPNs have slow speeds and cap bandwidth. A premium VPN with a reliable money-back guarantee is a better alternative. Top VPNs also won't record and sell your data like some free VPNs.

Can a VPN help access websites blocked by Spectrum?

A premium VPN can safely access websites from anywhere on various networks. Look for a VPN with servers worldwide and obfuscation technology so you can use it even on restricted networks, like school and work.

Spectrum rarely blocks any websites until you have its Security Shield, which is the ISP’s own cybersecurity feature. It is basically designed to keep your browsing activity safe from malware and monitor all smart home devices for any unusual activity. So, you might be able to access Spectrum-restricted websites by disabling the Security Shield if you are not using a VPN.

Can a VPN improve my Internet speeds in general?

No, all VPNs will slow you down at least a little (for the most part). However, with a premium VPN, this speed drop is unnoticeable. Connecting to a VPN, however, can prevent your ISP throttling speeds. This is because a VPN masks your actual IP by assigning you a new one.

Get the Best VPN for Spectrum

Only a few VPNs reliably work with Spectrum. My shortlisted Spectrum VPNs have fast servers in and outside the US that can solve throttling issues. They can also safely access platforms like Spectrum TV from anywhere. In addition, they adhere to a proven no-logs policy and have robust security features to safeguard your data when using Spectrum.

My top pick for Spectrum is ExpressVPN. It has the best speeds among all the VPNs we tested, and makes it easy to get a US IP address. Its automatic obfuscation lets you use it on Spectrum and restricted networks without getting blocked. You can try ExpressVPN risk-free as it's backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee.

To summarize, these are the best VPNs for Spectrum…

I’ve always been confused about VPN’s and only used them when I wanted to view my favorite international movies from back home that couldn’t be viewed in the US. Your research has made things a little clearer to me, but still have to take time and digest and process it all before going forward. I have a few questions if Andjela can answer them 1. Does the vpn affect your home security system that is WiFi dependent as well as 2. does the VPN work with Spectrum/Charter Securty Suite that they offer their customers for free and 3. What about Norton VPN how secure is it compared to the above as it is a very reputable company.

We're glad to hear that the information has helped clarify some things about VPNs for you! To answer your questions: 1. A VPN shouldn't affect your home security system as long as the system doesn't rely on IP address-based rules for managing internal connections. 2. Most VPNs, including those used on devices with Spectrum/Charter Security Suite, should work without any conflict, but it's always good to check with Spectrum for any specific compatibility issues. 3. Norton VPN is generally considered secure and reliable, thanks to its strong encryption protocols and reputable backing; however, the best choice depends on your specific needs and security requirements.
