5 Best VPNs for Sports Betting: Secure Access in 2025

Husain Parvez Updated on November 13, 2025 Fact-checked by Matthew Amos Cybersecurity Researcher

Every second counts in live betting, and a good VPN could be the difference between catching the right odds and missing out. I’ve had moments where a split-second delay meant the line shifted right before I could lock in my bet.

My team and I tested 48 VPNs to find the best ones that reliably keep up with live odds, remain stable for uninterrupted sports streaming, and are secure enough to protect your payments and personal data. The VPNs made big promises, but many failed to deliver. I only chose ones that made it simple to keep my connection fast and my data private.

In this guide, I’ll share the best sports betting VPNs for secure access to betting platforms like DraftKings, FanDuel, and Bet365, even on restricted networks. Each one offers smooth, fast live betting sessions. I found that even when traveling and using public WiFi, these VPNs could keep up with the fast-changing in-play markets.

Be advised. Sports betting is regulated differently across jurisdictions. While VPNs can help secure your connection, using them to bypass geographical restrictions may violate betting sites' terms of service or local laws. At vpnMentor, we don't condone illegal activities. Always verify the legality of online betting in your region before using a VPN.

Sports Betting VPN Comparison Table

Before diving into the full reviews, here’s a quick look at how the top VPNs for sports betting stack up. We compared their ability to prevent detection (obfuscation) and their performance across leading sportsbooks like BetMGM, DraftKings, FanDuel, and Bet365.

Server network Obfuscation Ping on Nearby Servers Dedicated IPs? Lowest Price Refund Period
🥇ExpressVPN 3,000 servers in 105 countries Automatic when selecting the default protocol 8ms (starting ping = 4ms) Yes $3.49/month 30 days*
🥈NordVPN 8,490 servers in 129 countries Provides specific obscured servers 10ms (starting ping = 5ms) Yes $2.99/month 30 days
🥉Private Internet Access 29,650 servers in 91 countries Use Multi-Hop that routes your traffic through the VPN and Shadowsocks 15ms (starting ping = 4ms) Yes $2.03/month 30 days
CyberGhost 11,690 servers in 100 countries None, but worked well with sports betting sites 11s (starting ping = 4ms) Yes $2.03/month 45 days
Surfshark 4,500 servers in 100 countries Activate Camouflage Mode 9ms (starting ping = 5ms) Yes $1.99/month 30 days

Note. Starting ping refers to the ping rate without the VPN connected.

How To Set Up and Use a VPN for Secure Sports Betting?

  1. Choose a VPN.
Pick a reliable VPN with obfuscation and dedicated IPs for consistent login on sports betting sites from anywhere. I recommend ExpressVPN because it offers both these features, and its fast Lightway protocol is unmatched in speed.
  2. Install the VPN.
Download the VPN for your preferred betting device: phone, tablet, or laptop. You can do this directly from the VPN website or your device's app store. Sign in to your account and allow the required permissions.
  3. Connect to a server.
Launch the app and select a server; the closer a server is to your location, the better your speeds are likely to be. The most popular sports betting apps are available in the US, and online sports gambling is legal in various states like New Jersey, Colorado, and Nevada. I recommend using a dedicated IP to prevent login errors and suspicious login flags.
  4. Place bets securely.
Log in to your sportsbook account and place your bets via the encrypted VPN connection. You get safer access with reduced risk of IP blocks or payment exposure.

What To Know Before Using a VPN For Betting

Before placing bets through a VPN, it’s important to understand how most sportsbooks verify your location. Betting platforms use multiple layers of detection, not just your IP address, but also GPS, WiFi, and cell tower data through services like GeoComply. This means that even with a VPN, your actual location may still be visible on mobile devices unless GPS spoofing or a compatible setup is used.

Using a VPN in restricted regions might violate the terms of service of particular sportsbooks. While your account may not get banned, repeated login mismatches can trigger temporary holds or verification checks. For safe, legitimate use, connect to VPN servers only in licensed jurisdictions where online betting is legal.

In-Depth Review: Best VPNs for Sports Betting (Updated 2025)

1. ExpressVPN — Fastest VPN Speeds for Live Sports Betting and Streaming From Anywhere

Best Feature Lightway protocol maintains stable connections for reliable live betting
Server Network Obfuscation on all 3,000 servers in 105 countries to reliably access sports betting sites
Speed Metric Our speeds even improved on some nearby servers (up to 9%), which shows the VPN can prevent ISP throttling
Compatible With Bet365, Betfair, 1xBet, Betway, Bovada, Sbobet, FanDuel, and more

With ExpressVPN's top speeds and low ping, you won't miss any of the action when odds are shifting every few seconds. The VPN consistently ranks among the fastest we’ve tested, averaging 178.72Mbps on nearby servers (from a base connection of 179Mbps). During live wagering on DraftKings and Bet365, our connections stayed smooth and responsive even as odds updated in real time. Its Lightway protocol is built for low-latency connections, keeping your bets in sync.

Screenshot showing how to switch servers on ExpressVPNUDP connections are usually fastest but TCP can be more reliable on unstable networks

Its lightweight design didn't drain my phone's battery even during extended betting sessions, and switching between servers took less than 3 seconds. I particularly appreciated how the app remembered my preferred betting server locations, allowing for rapid connections when time-sensitive opportunities arose. I recommend using the Smart Location feature to automatically connect to the best-performing server nearby, which saves time when switching between betting platforms.

ExpressVPN also brings serious privacy and security to your betting experience. Its TrustedServer technology (RAM-only servers wipe data with every reboot) prevents your activity logs from being stored, and its kill switch instantly cuts interney traffic if your connection drops, protecting sensitive data like payment details and account credentials. I also found the split-tunneling feature helpful, as it let me route my betting apps through the VPN while keeping other apps on my regular connection for better speeds.

If you prefer added consistency, ExpressVPN offers an optional Dedicated IP add-on, giving you a static IP less likely to trigger fraud checks or account re-verifications. One drawback is that it’s not the cheapest option, but the reliability and security are unmatched, and long-term options provide significant savings. You can test ExpressVPN risk-free thanks to its 30-day money-back guarantee and 24/7 live chat support that actually solves connection issues fast.

Useful Features

  • 1-click connections. Keep things simple when you need to place bets quickly. Aside from the Smart Location feature mentioned above, there’s also a Recent Location feature that saves your last-used server. These allow you to quickly connect so that you don’t lose any time when you want to place sports bets.
  • Shortcuts. Create quick-launch icons for your favorite sports betting sites and apps. You can add them directly to ExpressVPN's home screen for instant access.
  • Up to 14 device connections. Bet securely across multiple devices simultaneously. You can run betting apps on your phone while researching stats on your laptop.
  • Bitcoin payments. Add an extra layer of privacy when paying for the VPN. This payment method keeps your banking details separate from your VPN account, helping you to further protect your privacy while placing bets.

  • Works with top streaming sites

2. NordVPN — Threat Protection Feature for Smooth and Secure Sports Betting

Best Feature Threat Protection guards you from malicious ads, trackers, and websites, keeping you safe from pop-ups while placing bets
Server Network 8,490 servers in 129 countries for safe betting access from anywhere
Speed Metric Only a 5% speed decrease on nearby servers and 26% on faraway ones
Compatible With Bet365, Betfair, BetMGM, Betway, Stake Casino, FanDuel, and more

NordVPN's comprehensive Threat Protection feature adds crucial security for online betting. It quietly guards against fake sportsbook sites and malware-laden pop-ups without slowing down your connection. During our tests, it blocked suspicious scripts and prevented malware from loading on betting sites, keeping our payment details safe. If you opt for the upgraded version, this works even when you're not connected to a VPN server, providing continuous security while you browse odds or research matches.

Screenshot showing the NordVPN app over the DraftKings websiteAd-free pages also means that your sports betting sites load quicker

Use its specialized obfuscated servers to place bets on networks that restrict sports betting platforms, which are commonly found on public WiFi or office networks, as well as in many hotels. Obfuscation disguises your VPN traffic to make it appear as regular internet traffic, allowing you to place bets undetected. I love that NordVPN offers these select servers, though I prefer a VPN like ExpressVPN that offers obfuscation on all its servers.

Its NordLynx protocol provides quick response times while keeping encryption airtight. In our tests, NordVPN averaged 169.60Mbps across most US servers (from a base connection of 179Mbps). This was fast enough for live odds, streaming, and simultaneous logins without lag. I also noticed that I drained less battery power and used less data while on my phone, which is where I always place my bets.

One small con worth noting that initial connections to servers can take up to 30 seconds. However, once connected, you’ll get stable speeds for reliable live betting. You can test NordVPN's features for free with its 30-day money-back guarantee. Simply request a refund from 24/7 live chat if it’s not your top pick.

Useful Features

  • Dedicated IP option. NordVPN offers a static IP and builds a consistent login pattern with sportsbooks, lowering the chance of triggering fraud checks.
  • Meshnet. Create a secure network between your devices to access betting accounts safely while traveling or using public WiFi.
  • Refer a friend. Earn free months of VPN service when you invite other bettors to join, extending your service time at no extra cost.
  • Proven no-logging policy. NordVPN’s privacy policy states it won’t store your online activities, and it’s been proven through independent audits with reputable third parties.

NordVPN Pros, Cons, and Needed Improvements
  • Strong security and privacy

3. Private Internet Access — Servers in Every US State for Reliable US Sports Betting

Best Feature Thousands of US servers let you use sports betting sites safely in states that allow gambling
Server Network 29,650 servers in 91 countries to easily find a server for secure sports betting
Speed Metric Fast over short distances, average over long distances with some delays
Compatible With Bet365, Betfair, 1xBet, Betway, Bovada, Sbobet, FanDuel, and more

You can securely bet across multiple US sportsbooks, since Private Internet Access (PIA) offers servers in all 50 US states. This extensive network proved invaluable during testing, as it was easy to find an uncongested server in states where betting is legal. In our tests, PIA averaged 123.57Mbps (on a base connection of 221Mbps), keeping in-play wagers responsive and streams uninterrupted.

Screenshot showing the PIA desktop appYou can also lower your encryption level for a speed boost for live sports streams

State-specific servers help reduce the risk of detection by betting platforms. Instead of routing through overcrowded hubs like New York or Los Angeles, you can connect through smaller states such as Iowa or Kansas for faster, less detectable access to your betting apps.

Its MACE feature blocks suspicious ads and trackers commonly found on betting sites. During our PIA tests, this extra layer of protection prevented malicious scripts from loading, much like NordVPN's Threat Protection. The feature also helped pages load faster by eliminating resource-heavy advertising content that often slows down betting platforms.

The advanced settings can be overwhelming for VPN newcomers, particularly when configuring security protocols. However, all settings come pre-configured for security and streaming, so you don't need to adjust anything to start betting without interruption. You can try PIA first, using its 30-day money-back guarantee, and decide if it's worth it.

Useful Features

  • Unlimited device connections. Place sports bets from all your devices without juggling connections or logging out elsewhere. Plus, your family can secure their devices without interrupting your bets.
  • Token-based Dedicated IP system. It gives you a unique IP that isn’t linked to your personal account, which is ideal for reducing re-verification requests or banking-related flags.
  • Multi-Hop connections. Add an extra layer of privacy by routing your betting traffic through multiple servers. However, this can slow down your connection, so I wouldn’t recommend it for live betting.

Private Internet Access Pros, Cons, and Needed Improvements
  • Many servers to choose from

4. CyberGhost — Beginner-Friendly VPN Makes It Easy to Access Sports Betting Platforms Safely

Best Feature Intuitive design to securely start placing bets within minutes
Server Network 11,690 servers in 100 countries with streaming-optimized servers for various sports platforms, like ESPN+ and DAZN
Speed Metric The slowest premium VPN we tested, but we still achieved minimal lag, no matter which server we tried
Compatible With Bet365, Betfair, 1xBet, Betway, Bovada, Sbobet, FanDuel, and more

If you’re new to using VPNs for betting, CyberGhost is the easiest to get started with. It works great with platforms like Bet365 and Betway, so you can connect and start betting in seconds. The app suggests optimized connections based on your location, taking the guesswork out of server selection for new users. During our tests, we found its simple interface made it straightforward to secure our connection.

Screenshot showing how to connect to CyberGhost for betting on mobileI recommend the WireGuard protocol for mobile and desktop betting because IKEv2 is easier to detect and block

The Smart Rules feature makes betting even more convenient. You can set it to automatically connect whenever you open a betting app. I set up rules to connect to a nearby server whenever I launched DraftKings, and the VPN connected within seconds. However, it’s not quite as fast as ExpressVPN; we recorded 102.37Mbps on a base speed of 131Mbps.

CyberGhost’s Dedicated IP option is also a strong addition for regular bettors. It gives you a private, consistent IP address that helps avoid sportsbook login flags and two-factor rechecks caused by changing IPs.

One drawback is that monthly purchases are expensive and only have a short refund period. However, long-term offers are very affordable and include an extended 45-day money-back guarantee, giving you plenty of time to test all its betting-friendly features.

Useful Features

  • Block Content. This feature blocks malicious scripts, trackers, and ads on betting sites, protecting your device while browsing odds and placing bets.
  • Gaming-optimized servers. Its extensive server network includes specialized gaming servers well-suited for sports betting. These servers are optimized for low latency, which helps maintain responsive connections when placing live bets.

  • Secure access to streaming
  • Military-level security

5. Surfshark — Unlimited Connections to Place Sports Bets on All Your Devices Simultaneously

Best Feature Place bets on all your devices and double-screen big matchdays at the same time
Server Network 4,500 servers in 100 countries to place bets safely when traveling, even on public WiFi
Speed Metric Third fastest VPN we tested, with only a 12% speed drop when testing nearby servers
Compatible With Bet365, Betfair, BetMGM, Betway, Stake Casino, FanDuel, and more

If you manage multiple betting accounts or track odds across several screens, Surfshark is the best value pick. During our tests, we connected 12 different devices to place bets, monitor odds, and stream matches simultaneously without noticeable performance issues. We maintained 163.51Mbps on a 187Mbps base connection, which is nearly as fast as NordVPN.

Screenshot showing Dedicated IP on the Surfshark websiteYou can avoid CAPTCHA checks and IP blocks by using a dedicated IP with Surfshark

The IP Rotator feature adds an extra layer of security for your betting activities. This tool automatically changes your IP address at set intervals without disconnecting your VPN session. I found this particularly useful for long betting sessions, as the rotating IPs made it harder for betting platforms to track my VPN usage while maintaining stable connections.

One minor issue is that the Surfshark app, especially on Windows, is known to screw up its notifications. I’ve had several situations where I didn’t learn about an essential update for days. But if you’re aware of this, you can keep an eye on it, so it’s not a huge deal.

Like the other VPNs on this list, Surfshark also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try it risk-free. It’s also based in the Netherlands, a privacy-friendly jurisdiction with independently audited no-logs policies.

Useful Features

  • CleanWeb ad blocker. Prevents malicious scripts and trackers from loading on betting sites while eliminating distracting ads during live betting sessions.
  • Camouflage mode. Masks your VPN traffic as regular internet activity to reduce the risk of betting platforms detecting and blocking your VPN connection.
Price
$1.99/month (Surfshark Starter 2 Year + 3 Extra Months)
Money-back guarantee
30 Days
Customer Support
24/7 Live Chat Support
Surfshark Pros, Cons, and Needed Improvements
  • Easy to use
  • Military-grade security
  • Fast speeds
  • Clunky torrenting support
  • Based in a 9-Eyes country
  • Might not work in China

How We Test and Evaluate VPNs for Sports Betting

I focused on testing each VPN's performance with major betting platforms, like DraftKings, BetMGM, FanDuel, and Bet365, to evaluate their reliability during live betting sessions. Each VPN was measured across multiple devices, with login stability and IP reputation, to confirm it could handle rapid changes without triggering security flags or errors.

We also thoroughly assessed security features like encryption standards and payment protection. Since smartphones are a popular platform for sports betting, we paid special attention to each VPN’s mobile app performance and how quickly it drained our battery. Additionally, we verified the availability of servers in key betting jurisdictions and evaluated connection stability.

For more details about our comprehensive VPN testing process, visit our methodology page. There, you'll find an in-depth explanation of how our international team evaluates VPN services across multiple criteria. Feel free to use it as the basis for your own tests.

Try These Fixes if Your VPN Is Not Working With Sports Betting Platforms

I found that even the best VPNs can occasionally run into connection or verification issues with betting apps. Sportsbooks use advanced location checks, and a simple IP change isn’t always enough. If your VPN isn’t working with DraftKings, FanDuel, or BetMGM, try these quick fixes:

  1. Check your VPN server. Make sure your IP address actually changed by using an online IP checker. If the sportsbook still detects your real location, disconnect and reconnect to a nearby server.
  2. Switch servers or protocols. Some servers may be flagged or overloaded. Choose another one in the same legal state or region. If your VPN allows it, switch between WireGuard, Lightway, or OpenVPN for better compatibility.
  3. Clear browser cookies and cache. Betting sites store geolocation data that can override your VPN settings. Wiping this data can often fix location errors.
  4. Disable location services. On mobile devices, turn off GPS or enable Airplane Mode before reconnecting your VPN. If your VPN supports GPS override (like Surfshark on Android), it will allow it for more consistent results.
  5. Adjust firewall or antivirus settings. These tools can sometimes block VPN traffic. Add your VPN app to the list of exceptions.
  6. Update your VPN app. Outdated versions can cause connection drops or authentication errors. Make sure you’re running the latest version before betting.
  7. Use a dedicated IP address. If you’re repeatedly flagged for “suspicious login” or CAPTCHA loops, a dedicated IP (available from all the listed VPNs) gives you a clean, consistent address that looks more like a regular home connection.
  8. 24/7 live chat support. Reputable VPNs offer 24/7 live chat support that can recommend specific servers or settings that work with your sportsbook.

If your VPN still won’t connect, it’s likely the sportsbook is performing GPS and WiFi triangulation through GeoComply or similar tools. In those cases, mobile users may need a VPN-supported GPS spoofing feature to maintain stable access.

Which US States Don’t Allow Sports Betting?

As of 2025, 38 US states and Washington, D.C. have legalized sports betting in some form, either online, in-person, or both. That leaves a small group of states where sports betting remains illegal or unregulated, usually due to pending legislation, political resistance, or constitutional restrictions. If you live or travel in any of the states below, you won’t find licensed sportsbooks operating legally online or offline.

State Status
Alaska No active sports betting legislation
California Not yet legalized; multiple failed ballot initiatives
Georgia Ongoing debates; legislation not yet passed
Hawaii No gambling laws; betting is entirely prohibited
Idaho No bills introduced; remains illegal
Minnesota Ongoing tribal negotiations are delaying legalization
Missouri Bills introduced but not enacted
Oklahoma Legal disputes with tribal operators are ongoing
South Carolina Bills proposed, none passed
Texas Significant political opposition; currently illegal
Utah Constitutional ban on all forms of gambling

List of Countries Where Gambling is Illegal

A bunch of countries have complete or near-total bans on sports betting, often due to religious, cultural, or political reasons. Most Middle Eastern nations under Sharia law, as well as a few African and Asian countries, prohibit gambling entirely, including sports wagering. Here’s the complete list of nations where sports betting is currently illegal or heavily restricted:

Afghanistan Algeria Bangladesh Bhutan (partially banned) Brunei
Cambodia (partially banned) Egypt (partially banned) Indonesia (partially banned) Iran Iraq
Kuwait Laos (partially banned) Lebanon (partially banned) Libya Mauritania
Morocco (partially banned) Myanmar (partially banned) North Korea Oman Pakistan
Qatar Saudi Arabia Somalia Sudan Syria

FAQs on VPNs for Sports Betting

Can DraftKings and BetMGM detect my VPN?

While betting sites actively scan for VPN usage, quality providers stay one step ahead with specialized features. It's recommended to use a VPN with dedicated IP addresses and advanced obfuscation capabilities. Obfuscation makes your VPN traffic appear like regular internet traffic, whereas dedicated IPs are assigned to only you, reducing the likelihood of your account being flagged or blocked.

Which VPN is fastest for live odds streaming?

For live-odds streaming, you’ll want a VPN that delivers consistently high speeds, low latency, and reliable performance across long distances. VPNs that use lightweight protocols like WireGuard tend to offer the best results, keeping streams smooth and responsive during fast-moving matches. ExpressVPN's Lightway protocol is known for maintaining impressive speeds and stable connections even on mobile networks.

How can I safely gamble on sports betting sites?

A secure VPN connection is crucial for protecting your sensitive betting data. Look for providers offering payment data encryption and automatic WiFi protection for betting on mobile devices. Remember only to use betting platforms licensed in your jurisdiction and never share account credentials.

Is it legal to use a VPN for sports betting?

The legality of using VPNs for online sports betting varies by jurisdiction. Even though VPNs are useful online privacy tools that offer a whole suite of benefits, using them to circumvent geographical restrictions may violate betting sites' terms of service. It's recommend that you check your local online gambling laws and the specific platform's policies before placing bets through a VPN.

Can I use a free VPN for sports betting?

Usually, using a free VPN puts your betting account and personal data at risk. Free services typically have slow speeds that can disrupt live betting, limited server options, and weak security measures. Consider investing in a reliable paid VPN with features specifically designed for secure online betting.

However, some free VPNs might work for sports betting without major speed reduction. vpnMentor regulalry test the most secure free VPNs to provided you with updated insights.

Get the Best VPN for Sports Betting

Very few VPNs can consistently maintain stable connections for live sports betting. Many either trigger location verification errors, lag during in-play markets, or fail to stay undetected by sportsbook security checks. After reviewing dozens of options across major platforms, only a handful proved fast, secure, and dependable enough to handle live wagers, streaming, and payments without interruption.

While every VPN featured here performs well, ExpressVPN stands out as the most reliable for sports betting. Its combination of high-speed servers, automatic obfuscation, and ultra-low latency makes it perfect for reacting to real-time odds. Paired with strong privacy features and consistent access across regions, it delivers the most stable and secure experience.

Your Internet Provider:

Some sites might use these details for advertising, analytics, or tracking your online preferences.

To protect your data from the websites you visit, one of the most effective steps is to hide your IP address, which can reveal your location, identity, and browsing habits. Using a virtual private network (VPN) masks your real IP by routing your internet traffic through a secure server, making it appear as though you're browsing from a different location. A VPN also encrypts your connection, keeping your data safe from surveillance and unauthorized access.

I subscribed to, and trialed 4 of the recommended VPN providers, each one failed to apply a VPN so as I could use Sportsbet on my android mobile whilst overseas. Here is an example of the feedback received -
"Unfortunately, we can't guarantee that our service will work with betting websites. These platforms often invest significant resources to block VPN services. While we strive to provide a reliable experience, there may be instances where you may encounter difficulties."

These VPN providers need to update there service before offering the ability to use sport betting whilst overseas...hmmmm...
