5 Best VPNs for PS4/PS5 + How to Set Up Easily (Tested 2022)

Finding a good VPN for PlayStation isn’t easy, namely because they can be difficult to set up on consoles. In addition to that, most VPNs increase your latency so much that lag makes gaming impossible.

With a fast and reliable VPN, you can improve your speeds, access geo-restricted content, and reduce input latency on PlayStation. This means you get all the benefits a VPN offers for gaming (and even streaming) on your PS4 or PS5. Furthermore, its security features will also protect you from DDoS attacks and encrypt your data so you can play online safely.

My team and I tested 35 VPNs on a PS5, and out of all of them, my top recommendation is ExpressVPN. It has an extensive server network, incredibly fast speeds, and is easy to set up, so you can game online without compromise. You can try ExpressVPN out risk-free as it’s backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee. In case you don’t like it, claiming a refund is easy.

Short on Time? Here Are the Best VPNs for PlayStation in 2022

  1. ExpressVPN — Superfast speeds, a huge server network, and great device compatibility to game and stream on your PS4/PS5 without lag.
  2. CyberGhost — Dedicated gaming servers for low-latency gaming, and high reliability for unblocking popular streaming platforms on your PlayStation.
  3. Private Internet Access — Strong security suite to protect your gaming accounts from hackers, but the app can be hard to master.
  4. IPVanish — Robust security features and plenty of servers to game with people from several countries worldwide, but not a good option for streaming on your PS console.
  5. PrivateVPN — Beginner-friendly app to find fast gaming servers with ease, but it doesn’t have the largest server network.

Best VPNs for PlayStation — Full Analysis (Updated in 2022)

1. ExpressVPN — Superfast Speeds for Lag-Free Gaming and Streaming on PlayStation

  • Lightning-fast speeds
  • 3,000 servers in 94 countries
  • 5 simultaneous device connections
  • Works with: Fortnite, GTA Online, Call of Duty Warzone, Minecraft, Roblox, and more
  • Unblocks: Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, and more
  • Compatible with: PS4, PS5, Xbox One/Series, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, routers, and more
ExpressVPN Offer August 2022: For a limited time only, you can get an ExpressVPN subscription for up to 49% off! Don't miss out!

ExpressVPN’s fast speeds allow you to play online on your PlayStation without lag. During my tests, I connected to its UK, US, and Australia servers, all of which are more than 3,000 km away from me. Across all servers, I had an average of 79 Mbps of speed (on a base connection of 100 Mbps), which is 8 times more than what is recommended for online gaming.

Screenshots showing ExpressVPN's good long-distance server speeds

You only need speeds of 15 Mbps for online gaming (or 25 Mbps for Ultra HD streaming)

If unblocking streaming content on your PlayStation is your main concern, ExpressVPN has a feature designed to make this really easy. MediaStreamer lets you change virtual locations on your PS without complicated setups (it only took me 5 minutes). Just copy the special DNS code from your ExpressVPN dashboard into your PlayStation’s network settings, and you can watch tons of geo-restricted content. I was able to access Hulu, HBO Max, and US Netflix on my PS5 from my location in Europe when I tested it.

In order to use the full VPN on your console, you can either set it up on your router or share your VPN connection from your PC to your console. ExpressVPN comes with a dedicated app for routers, which makes it really easy to use on PlayStation (should you choose to connect it this way). With a lot of VPNs, you have to manually change server locations in your router settings. With this router app, changing settings or servers only takes a couple of clicks.

Connecting your PlayStation through your router or PC gives you access to its vast server network of 3,000 servers in 94 countries. This means you can access even more geo-blocked content and it allows you to compete against opponents from across the world. I connected to international gaming servers to play Warzone, and competed against players from Germany, Korea, Egypt, and many other countries.

In addition, there are multiple security protocols to protect your gaming sessions without compromising your speeds. ExpressVPN comes equipped with IKEv2, L2TP/IPSec, OpenVPN, and its proprietary Lightway protocol. I recommend enabling the Lightway option to get the best mix of speeds and security (plus, it's available for routers). On a 100 Mbps connection, I got 77 Mbps which was 20% faster than what I got using the other protocols.

Prices start at $6.67/month, which is a bit pricier than other VPNs. However, ExpressVPN often has deals or promotions running — I was able to save 49% when I signed up. There are 3 subscription options: monthly, bi-annual, and annual. The annual plan is the best value since they all come with the same features, and this plan has the lowest monthly price.

No matter which plan you choose, you can try ExpressVPN out risk-free because it's backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee. In case it doesn’t meet your needs, you can claim a full refund. To test this myself, I contacted support through the 24/7 live chat and asked for my money back after 2 weeks of using ExpressVPN. Support wasn't pushy and only asked a few questions about my experience with the service. After that, my request was approved, and I got my refund in 2 days.

2. CyberGhost — Gaming-Optimized Servers for Gaming Without Interruptions

  • 9,023 servers in 91 countries, including gaming-optimized servers
  • Superfast speeds
  • 7 simultaneous device connections
  • Works with: Fortnite, GTA Online, Call of Duty Warzone, Minecraft, Roblox, and more
  • Unblocks: Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, and more
  • Compatible with: PS4, PS5, Xbox One/Series, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, routers, and more
August 2022 Deal: CyberGhost is currently offering 82% off its most popular plan! Take advantage of this offer now and save more on your CyberGhost subscription.

CyberGhost’s gaming-optimized servers give you fast speeds with low ping, perfect for smooth gaming on PlayStation. Using 3 of its gaming-optimized servers (all of which were 700+ km away from me), I had speeds averaging 40 Mbps. This allowed me to play Red Dead Redemption 2 online without lag (you need 15 Mbps for smooth online gaming). My average ping hovered around 66 ms, which is impressively low. Any ping below 100 ms is acceptable for gaming, so you won’t have any issues in terms of latency while playing your favorite PS4 or PS5 games.

A screenshot showing some of CyberGhost's gaming-optimized servers

You can play your favorite PlayStation games without any lag

If you want to unblock streaming apps on your PlayStation, CyberGhost offers a SmartDNS service that makes this simple. Similar to ExpressVPN, you just need to copy a code from your CyberGhost account into your console’s network settings. You can choose codes from 5 different locations, including the US, UK, and Japan. When I tested it, it took me about 5 minutes to set up on my PS5 and I successfully watched shows on Netflix (US & UK), Hulu, and BBC iPlayer.

If you want to install the full-featured VPN on your PlayStation, then you can set it up on your router or through a VPN-enabled hotspot. CyberGhost offers pre-configured VPN routers, so instead of setting up the VPN on your router manually, you can just purchase one of its pre-configured FlashRouters and save yourself some time. You just have to plug in your VPN router, and your PlayStation (and all your home devices) will be automatically secured.

Then you’ll also be protected from cyberattacks with its top-quality security features. CyberGhost’s military-grade encryption, automatic kill switch, and dedicated WebRTC, DNS, and IPv6 leak protection will keep your online data safe and private while gaming. During my testing, I ran 6 of CyberGhost’s gaming servers through leak tests, and no leaks were detected.

CyberGhost’s monthly subscription is pretty expensive. However, you can get CyberGhost for just $2.29/month if you opt for a long-term plan. The 1- and 2-year plans sometimes have extra months added in for free and both come with an extended money-back guarantee period (45 days vs. 14 days with the monthly plan).

I tested its 45-day money-back guarantee and made sure it's reliable and hassle-free. After using the VPN for 13 days, I contacted support via its 24/7 live chat feature and asked for a refund. I wasn’t pressured to stay, and my request was approved almost immediately. In 4 days, I got my money back.

3. Private Internet Access — Solid Security to Protect You From DDoS Attacks While Gaming

  • IP masking, military-grade encryption, DNS leak protection, and a kill switch
  • 29,650 servers in 84 countries
  • 10 simultaneous device connections
  • Works with: Fortnite, GTA Online, Call of Duty Warzone, Minecraft, Roblox, and more
  • Unblocks: Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, and more
  • Compatible with: PS4, PS5, Xbox One/Series, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, routers, and more
August 2022 Update: PIA doesn't usually have deals or discounts (it's already so affordable), but right now you can get a new subscription for a crazy 82% off!

Private Internet Access has strong security features, including IP masking, DNS leak protection, and a kill switch to protect you while gaming. All of these ensure none of your data is exposed on shared gaming servers. I tested its servers in the US and UK and there weren't any leaks detected. In addition, PIA’s servers are meant for a lot of traffic (unlike the ones provided by your ISP), meaning hackers won’t be able to crash your game with DDoS attacks.

A screenshot showing that PIA's NY server didn't leak my real IP address

Your connection will always be protected from cyberattacks

Unlike CyberGhost, PIA doesn’t have gaming-optimized servers, but finding a speedy server is still easy. The latency (or ping) is displayed next to each server, so you can select one with the lowest ping rate to ensure you won’t have any lag. I was able to find a fast US connection which allowed me to watch Disney+ on my PS5 without buffering. Plus, I could play against a completely new Fortnite player base at a respectable 81 ms ping.

PIA also comes with a Smart DNS feature to make unblocking streaming apps on PlayStation no issue. However, like all VPNs, to get full protection, you have to install it on your router or share a VPN hotspot from your PC to your console. There are detailed step-by-step guides on PIA’s website that show you how to set up compatible routers. If you don’t want to go through all those steps, it also offers pre-configured FlashRouters, which are a much simpler solution.

Private Internet Access is reasonably priced. Its longest plan only costs $2.19/month. If you opt for the 1-month subscription, you’ll spend considerably more than you would with the yearly plans. Your best option is to get a long-term subscription as it offers the best value.

It comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee so you can test Private Internet Access for free for 30 days. To make sure they would hold true to the guarantee, I contacted support and asked for a refund. After I answered a couple of questions, my request was approved and I got my money back 5 days later.

4. IPVanish — Unlimited Connections to Play Safely on All Your Gaming Devices

  • Unlimited simultaneous device connections
  • 2,000 servers in 75 countries
  • AES 256-bit encryption, kill switch, and DNS/IP leak protection
  • Works with: Fortnite, GTA Online, Call of Duty Warzone, Minecraft, Roblox, and more
  • Unblocks: Netflix, Disney+, YouTube, Spotify, and more
  • Compatible with: PS4, PS5, Xbox One/Series, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, routers, and more
IPVanish August 2022 Deal: It's hard to find active IPVanish offers so I was really surprised to find this one! Click here to get 77% off your IPVanish subscription today! Discount automatically applied (no code required).

IPVanish allows unlimited device connections, so you can share it with everyone in your household. When testing this feature, I connected my PlayStation 5, iPad, Android phone, and even an old Linux workstation. Even though I had plenty of devices active, my speed didn’t drop below 45 Mbps while gaming. With results like these, you’ll be able to play your online games at low ping and with no disconnections.

IPVanish gives you complete control over server selection since you can choose one based on ping, distance, or load. I was able to find a speedy server for gaming by choosing one with the lowest ping (a lower ping gives less lag). Most VPNs will randomly assign you a server when you select a location. However, with IPVanish, you can easily sort servers to reduce latency and in-game lag.

A screenshot of the IPVanish sorting feature found in its user interface

IPVanish’s app can easily help you find a speedy server to reduce your ping for great gaming performance

IPVanish’s drawback is that it doesn’t offer a Smart DNS feature to easily unblock streaming apps right on your PlayStation (and it’s unreliable for unblocking streaming apps, too). However, you can configure the VPN on your router or buy one of IPVanish’s pre-configured routers. This way, you can not only connect your PlayStation console to it, but also all of your devices that are connected to that router. If you want an even easier method, you can just share a VPN hotspot from your PC to your PS4/PS5.

The long-term plan comes at $2.50/month, which is pretty affordable. If you choose the monthly plan, it gets more expensive in the long run. Nevertheless, I suggest getting the yearly plan since it offers the best price and gives you all the same features as the shorter terms.

If you aren’t ready to commit, you can try IPVanish on your PS4/PS5 for 30 days using its money-back guarantee. After testing the service for 2 weeks, I got a full refund simply by logging into my account on its website and clicking on “I wish to cancel my subscription”. There’s no need to contact support to confirm the request, you’ll just get a confirmation email after completing the process. In 3 days, I got my money back.

5. PrivateVPN — User-Friendly App to Find Low-Latency Servers for Smooth Gameplay

  • Ultra-fast speeds
  • 200 servers in 63 countries
  • 10 simultaneous device connections
  • Works with: Fortnite, GTA Online, Call of Duty Warzone, Minecraft, Roblox, and more
  • Unblocks: Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, and more
  • Compatible with: PS4, PS5, Xbox One/Series, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, routers, and more

PrivateVPN’s speeds are fast for streaming and gaming. I tested the speeds on its New Jersey server (which is far away from my location in Europe) and got a consistent speed of 20 Mbps. This allowed me to play GTA Online with my US friends without any noticeable input lag. The ping is displayed next to each server on its apps, which comes in really handy for choosing the one with the lowest latency for gaming.

A screenshot of PrivateVPN's server selection screen on its Windows app

You will have no trouble finding a fast connection

Its support team is reliable and helpful. I had trouble setting up my PC to share my VPN connection with my PS5 during my testing, so I contacted support for help over 24/7 live chat. Just 2 minutes later, I was connected to an agent who gave me step-by-step directions on how to connect my PS5 to my PC’s VPN connection. This means you can rely on support for immediate assistance if you have questions.

PrivateVPN doesn’t come with a Smart DNS feature, so if you want to stream geoblocked content on your PlayStation, you’ll have to set it up on your router, or through your PC (like I did). It’s a bit more complicated to set up, but I could still watch US Netflix without buffering on my console, plus I could use the VPN’s entire network of servers.

You can sign up for as little as $2/month. I find its 24-month plan to be the best value. It provides the same features as the 1-month and 3-month plans, but costs significantly less in the long run.

If you’re unsure, you can give PrivateVPN a try with your PlayStation risk-free. It's backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee, so if it doesn’t meet your gaming demands, you can always get a refund. I put this claim to the test by contacting support via its website’s 24/7 live chat feature. Once I was done answering a couple of questions, my request was approved, and I got my money back 6 days later.

Tips on How to Choose the Best VPN for PlayStation

A high-quality VPN for your PlayStation should be fast and equipped with the latest security features and have global servers. It should be easy to set up on a router and offer good compatibility for routers. In addition, a responsive customer support team to help with setup if you need it. I selected the VPNs on this list using these criteria:

  • Fast speeds. The faster your speeds are and the lower your ping, the quicker your input will be registered by the game. I recommend speeds above 25 Mbps for fast-paced online games and 4K video streaming. I tested all the VPNs in this list for speed and each one gave me consistent, quick speeds well above this recommendation. Each of them also gave me ping results more than suitable for gaming without choppiness or lag.
  • Large server network. You should look for a VPN with many servers located in different locations. The more servers, the less likely you’ll run into overcrowded servers that can slow down speeds. Moreover, the closer the server, the faster your speeds will be, meaning you’ll get less lag in-game. Plus, the more server locations, the more gaming servers you’ll be able to access with low ping.
  • Easy to set up on consoles. If you want to unblock streaming apps, then choose a VPN that offers Smart DNS. For full use of the VPN on your console, choose a VPN that is compatible with your router. All of these VPNs offer detailed and easy-to-follow setup guides for routers on their sites. If you want to skip the setup and have a few dollars to spend, you can opt for a VPN that sells pre-configured routers instead. All of the VPNs in this list can also be set up as VPN hotspots, so you can connect your PlayStation through your Mac or PC, too.
  • Robust privacy and security features. To stay private and safe while playing games online, features such as 256-bit encryption and leak protection are essential. I tested all the VPNs in this list for leaks using ipleak.net and all of them passed.
  • Responsive customer support. Good customer support will help you deal with problems more effectively. All of the VPNs in this list offer 24/7 live chat support, so you can get help or an answer at any time, regardless of your time zone.
  • Reliable money-back guarantee. A vendor that offers a money-back guarantee is confident in its services. All the VPNs I’ve listed come with a reliable and trustworthy money-back guarantee, which gives you the option to test them with your PlayStation and claim a full refund if you’re not happy with its performance.

How to Set Up a VPN on Your PlayStation Console

There are 4 methods for setting up a VPN on PlayStation consoles. The PC and Mac methods are the easiest to set up, but they offer higher latency as your device is using the same traffic. The router method is slightly trickier to set up but provides the best latency since it doesn’t share traffic and offers a direct connection to the VPN.

The Smart DNS method is the fastest, but it doesn’t let you use the full-featured VPN. It’s good if you only want to change your console’s online location, but it’s not the safest as it doesn’t encrypt your data. I recommend the PC method for ease of use and the router method for best performance.

I recommend using ExpressVPN for PlayStation since it’s the fastest VPN I tested, making it ideal for gaming. It also has a Smart DNS feature and a handy app for routers which makes it really easy to switch server locations on your PlayStation and control how it connects to the VPN.

PC Method — Ethernet or WiFi

  1. Connect your PS4/PS5 to your PC. You can skip this step if you’re using WiFi. Use an ethernet cable to connect your PlayStation to your computer. You can use a second ethernet cable to connect your computer to your router as well — this will give you faster speeds than using a WiFi connection.
  2. Connect your VPN. Choose the location you wish to connect to from your VPN’s list of servers and connect to it. Choose one close to your actual location for best performance.
  3. Open your PC’s Network settings. If you’re not using an ethernet cable, choose the “Mobile Hotspot” option and turn it on.
  4. Change your adapter options. Scroll down to find this option under “related settings”. This will take you to the Network Connections window, where you will see a network called Local Area Connection #.
  5. Access your VPN’s connection. Locate a connection with your VPN’s name (for ex. “ExpressVPN Wintun Driver”) and right-click to open its “Properties”.
  6. Allow sharing. In the sharing tab, check the box for “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection.”
  7. Select the network to share. Under “Home Networking Connection”, select the name of either the mobile hotspot (Local Area Connection #) you just created or the ethernet connection you made to your PlayStation and click “OK”.
  8. Set up your PlayStaion’s connection. Go to Settings > Network > Connect to the internet. For WiFi connections: select WiFi and connect to the network you set up previously. For ethernet: select Use a LAN cable > Easy. Select “Do not use a proxy server” if prompted.
  9. Access region-exclusive content on your console. Your VPN is now connected to your PS4 or PS5 via your PC.

Mac — Ethernet or WiFi

  1. Connect your Mac to your PlayStation. You can skip this step if you’re using WiFi. Use an ethernet to connect your PlayStation to your macOS device. You can use a second ethernet cable to connect your macOS to your router/modem as well — this will give you faster speeds than using a WiFi connection.
  2. Share your internet connection. Go to System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing. Under “Share your connection from”, choose your VPN. Under “To computers using”, choose either WiFi or ethernet, depending on how you’re going to connect your PS4/PS5.
  3. Set up a name and password. (Skip this step if you’re using a LAN cable.) Click “WiFi options” and choose whatever name and password you want for your hotspot. If you see a pop-up that says, “To share your Internet connection, you must turn on WiFi,” click “Turn WiFi On”.
  4. Turn on Internet Sharing. If you get a pop-up that says, “Are you sure you want to turn on Internet sharing?” click on “Start”.
  5. Connect to a server with your VPN. Just open your VPN on your Mac and connect to the server you want.
  6. Set up your PlayStation’s connection. Go to Settings > Network > Connect to the internet. For WiFi connections: select WiFi and connect to the network you set up in step 4. For ethernet: select Use a LAN cable > Easy. Select “Do not use a proxy server” if prompted.
  7. Start gaming and streaming. Your VPN is now connected to your PS4 or PS5 via your macOS device.

Router Method

When you set up a VPN on your router, every device connected to it (PS4/PS5 included) will be covered by the VPN as well. Unfortunately, not all routers are compatible with VPNs. If that’s the case for you, then I would recommend the PC method instead.

In addition, every router has a specific set of instructions to get a VPN set up on it. These instructions are only for setting up ExpressVPN’s router app on an ASUS router.

  1. Download the ExpressVPN firmware. It’s available from your account dashboard on ExpressVPN’s website. Use the drop down menu to select your model of ASUS router and select “download firmware”. Keep the window open: you’ll need the activation code to complete router setup.
  2. Make sure your router is connected to the internet. Either connect your router to a modem or to a WiFi connection.
  3. Log in to your router. Type “router.asus.com” or “” into your browser and log in to your router settings. If you haven’t created personal login details, just enter “admin” for both your username and password.
  4. Install the ExpressVPN firmware. On the left column, select “Administration”. Then choose “Firmware Upgrade”. Click “Upload” next to “Manual firmware upload” and select the firmware you downloaded in step 1 (it’s a.trx file). When the firmware upgrade is complete, reboot your router.
  5. Complete router setup. Once you reconnect to your router, the ExpressVPN router firmware should pop up on your screen. Just select “Get Started” and follow the instructions. Make note of the WiFi name and password as well as the router password you’re shown upon completion and click “Save”.
  6. Connect your PlayStation to the router. Go to your PlayStation’s network settings and connect it to your newly set up VPN router connection.
  7. Start gaming and streaming on your PlayStation! You now have full access to ExpressVPN’s server network and security features on your PS4/PS5.

Smart DNS Method

  1. Sign up for a VPN. ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, and Private Internet Access all offer a Smart DNS feature that will let you unblock streaming apps on your PlayStation.
  2. Register your IP address. Log in to your VPN dashboard in your browser and look for an option like “DNS Settings” or “Smart DNS”. Click on that and register your IP address with your VPN provider (this is usually done automatically).
  3. Note the DNS code. Once your IP is registered, you’ll see a DNS code. You need to enter this code into your PlayStation’s network settings.
  4. Turn on your PlayStation system. Go to Settings > Network > Set up your internet connection > Custom.
  5. Configure the connection. Choose “WiFi” if your PS4/PS5 is connected to the internet over WiFi or “LAN cable” if it’s connected using an ethernet cable. Then choose Automatic > Do Not Specify > Manual (for DNS settings). Input the DNS codes you got in step 3. Then continue the setup and select Automatic > Do Not Use. Select “Test Your Internet Connection” and then restart your console.
  6. Start streaming movies and TV shows! Choose your favorite streaming service and watch shows and movies that aren’t normally available in your location straight from your PS4/PS5!

FAQs on Best VPNs for PlayStation

Can I watch Netflix with a VPN on a PlayStation?

Yes, you can. There are several ways to do this, but the easiest method is using Smart DNS, which is a feature many VPNs offer. All you have to do is copy a code into your PlayStation’s network settings and reboot your console. When you open the Netflix app, the regional library of the DNS code you chose should load automatically. However, Smart DNS usually only comes with a handful of locations and it doesn’t offer the same security features as a full VPN app.

To access the most Netflix content on your console, you can set your VPN up on your router or create a VPN hotspot on your computer and connect your PS4/PS5 to that connection. This will give you full use of the VPN’s security features and access to its entire network on your console, allowing you to unblock more regional Netflix libraries.

Router setup can be pretty complicated, and you need to make sure your router is compatible with VPN firmware. So, I recommend the PC method, which essentially lets you control the VPN on your PlayStation through your computer.

How do I use a VPN on a PS4/PS5?

There are 3 ways to use a VPN on a PlayStation. You can connect your VPN to a PS4/PS5 by sharing a VPN connection from your computer. This is the easiest way to make full use of a VPN app on PlayStation and doesn’t require buying a fancy VPN router. Just create a hotspot with your computer with the VPN connected, connect your PlayStation to the hotspot, and control the VPN through your PC.

You can also connect a VPN to your PlayStation by installing it on your router. Some VPNs (namely, ExpressVPN) come with router apps that make them really easy to control on the devices connected to that network (including gaming consoles). Other VPNs don’t have apps and you have to control them manually through your router’s control panel.

Finally, some VPNs come with a Smart DNS tool, which lets you change locations directly on your PlayStation really easily. However, it doesn’t offer the security and privacy protection of a full VPN app. This is a great option for unblocking streaming apps, but isn’t great for staying safe while gaming online.

Can I set up a VPN on my PS4 or PS5 without a PC?

Technically, you can set up a VPN on your PlayStation device using your smartphone. All of the VPNs in this list are also compatible with both Android and iOS. So, you could install the VPN on one of those devices and share a WiFi hotspot from your phone. Then, just connect your PlayStation to the hotspot. Bear in mind that games require a lot of data, which could cost you a lot of money if you have limited data on your phone plan.

How will a VPN make my PlayStation gaming experience better?

A fast and reliable VPN can make your gaming experience better in a couple of ways:

  1. Allows access to geo-blocked platforms such as Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Hulu on your console. If you use your PS4/PS5 to watch movies and TV shows, a VPN can help you access more content since it can bypass geoblocks set by those streaming services. Keep in mind a VPN won't change your PSN country. You'll need to create a new PSN account set to the country where the app is available to download it on your console.
  2. Boosts your internet speeds by bypassing ISP throttling. Some networks have to cap speeds for high-bandwidth activities like gaming and streaming. A VPN can bypass this limitation by encrypting your traffic. This way, your ISP can’t see what kind of activity you’re performing online, so they can’t cap your speeds because of it.
  3. Allows you to access international gaming servers. Most online games will connect you automatically to a server nearby. However, with a VPN, you can connect to another country and compete with a completely new audience. Plus, some games are released sooner in other regions, meaning you can create a new PSN account set to the region where the game is available and download the title.
  4. Protects you from DDoS attacks that can crash your game. Some competitors might try to gain an unfair advantage by slowing down your internet connection through spam. But with a VPN, your actual IP address is masked, so it would be tough to target you. Even if they could, a VPN’s server network is designed to handle the incoming spam overload, anyway.

Are there any free VPNs that work with PlayStation?

I wouldn’t recommend using a free VPN with PlayStation (or any gaming console). Instead, I recommend using a VPN that comes with a reliable money-back guarantee. This way you can test the VPN out without limitations and claim a full refund if you’re not satisfied with it. Some of the VPNs in this list don’t even require a reason to cancel and will give you all your money back as long as you do so within the guarantee period.

The reason free VPNs aren’t good for PlayStation is that they’re really slow and have tiny server networks. That means overcrowding plus possible long-distance connections, which significantly slow down speeds. In addition, free VPNs don’t usually offer router support, so you’d be stuck using a VPN hotspot, which further slows your speeds. Not only that, but free VPNs usually cap data at about 1-5GB per month, which is simply just not enough to game or stream for any significant amount of time (you can stream in HD for about 1 hour with 1 GB of data).

In addition, some free VPNs have been known to make money by logging and selling private data to third-party advertisers. While they may be free, most of them simply aren’t worth the risks.

A fast and reliable VPN can improve your PlayStation experience. The problem is that VPNs aren’t the easiest to get up and running on a gaming console since they’re not directly compatible.

However, ExpressVPN is an excellent option for PlayStation because it’s superfast and easy to set up and use with the console. Then you can connect to international gaming servers, unblock geo-restricted games and streaming content, and protect your online gaming sessions. Since it is backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee, you can test ExpressVPN with your PlayStation risk-free. If you don’t like it, it’s easy to claim a full refund.
