5 Best VPNs for PS4/PS5 + How to Set Up Easily (Tested 2021)

I wanted to use a VPN to watch geoblocked streaming content and protect my privacy on my PlayStation like I’ve been able to do easily on my PC. But I was worried it would be complicated to set up and slow my speeds down while gaming.

My team and I tested 100+ VPNs to see if they could easily unblock streaming apps and keep you safe on PlayStation — without affecting gameplay with slow speeds. There are a handful of VPNs that have great speeds, can bypass geo-restricted streaming content and are easy to configure on a PlayStation console.

My favorite is ExpressVPN because it has superfast speeds for gaming, strong security features, and was really easy to set up. It also has a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try ExpressVPN risk-free.

ExpressVPN Risk-Free

Short on Time? These Are the Top 5 VPNs for PlayStation in 2021

  1. ExpressVPN — Dependable server network to unblock streaming apps on your PS4/PS5 and strong encryption with good speeds for gaming.
  2. CyberGhost — Easy-to-use VPN app with gaming (and streaming) optimized servers, but the monthly plan is a bit expensive.
  3. Private Internet Access — Tons of servers for great gaming speeds, but it’s harder to set up than other VPNs.

Plus 2 more VPNs that are great for PlayStation

Best VPNs for PS4 and PS5 — (Updated in 2021)

1. ExpressVPN — Reliable, Fast Servers Great for Gaming and Streaming on Your PS4/PS5

  • Superfast speeds for a lag-free gaming experience
  • 3,000 servers in 94 locations makes bypassing geoblocks easy
  • AES 256-bit encryption and leak protection to keep you anonymous while gaming online
  • 5 simultaneous device connections
  • 30-day money-back guarantee
  • Works with: Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Vudu, and more
  • Compatible with: PlayStation, Xbox, Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux, routers, and more

ExpressVPN’s latest deal July 2021: Get 3 months completely free on your annual subscription with this current offer! It’s not for certain when this deal will end so it’s best to check the deals page to see if it’s still available.

You can access more geoblocked streaming content on your PlayStation with ExpressVPN’s big server network. Even if you find a server that doesn’t work, you have so many more to choose from that will. I tested 12 server locations including the US, UK, Canada, and Japan and it only took about 5 seconds for each country’s regional Netflix library to load. I could even watch other blocked platforms like BBC iPlayer, Hulu, and HBO Max.

A vast network also means you get really fast download speeds, which is essential for any gaming VPN. So many servers means your game won’t start lagging because of overcrowding. I had speeds of 45 Mbps when I tested ExpressVPN — I like to have a minimum speed of 15 Mbps for online gaming, so this was more than fast enough for me to play Modern Warfare online without lag.

On top of that, ExpressVPN’s Lightway security protocol kept me well protected without slowing my speeds down. And I didn’t have to worry about hackers or snoopers while playing because ExpressVPN comes with 256-bit encryption, IP and DNS leak protection, and an automatic kill switch. That means none of the players on the gaming server you use can see your IP address, so there’s no chance you’ll suffer from DDoS attacks that crash your game. When I performed leak tests on 10 servers just to be sure I was protected, no IP or DNS leaks were detected.

I also like that ExpressVPN comes with a SmartDNS option (called MediaStreamer) that let me unblock Hulu and Disney+ (and others) on my PS4 really easily. You can even get routers that come pre-configured with ExpressVPN, so setting up your PS4/PS5 is painless. I checked on this and, unfortunately, they are pretty expensive, so it’s not really worth it unless you need a new router anyway. However, setting it up by sharing my PC’s VPN connection was easy when I used its online setup guide. Its 24/7 live chat support team was super responsive as well, so if you have any issues a live agent is always available.

I do find ExpressVPN a bit expensive. However, I was excited when I discovered I could get 49% off my subscription when I signed up, which made it way more worth it.

Before committing to a subscription, you can test ExpressVPN out risk-free as it’s backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you’re not satisfied, you can get a full refund within 30 days. I asked for a refund after completing this review through its 24/7 live chat — I got my money back 3 days later without any issues.

2. CyberGhost — User-Friendly App with Gaming Optimized Servers

  • Impressive speeds for online gaming and streaming in HD
  • 7,004 servers in 91 locations for best performance
  • AES 256-bit encryption and leak protection to keep you anonymous online
  • 7 simultaneous device connections
  • 45-day money-back guarantee
  • Works with: Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, HBO Go, Showtime, and more
  • Compatible with: PlayStation, Xbox, Mac, Windows, Linux, Android, iOS, routers, and more

July 2021 Deal: CyberGhost is currently offering 85% off its most popular plan! Take advantage of this offer now and save more on your CyberGhost subscription.

CyberGhost is a great option for beginners because it’s super easy to use. The app is sleek and simple and setting it up was easy. It even has 24/7 live chat support and easy-to-follow guides on its website to help you if you have any issues. On top of that, its gaming optimized servers make finding a fast server for gaming effortless. I simply clicked on “Gaming Servers” in the menu and was given options in the US, the UK, France, and Germany.

I got great speeds using CyberGhost’s gaming servers. When I tested 3 of its optimized London ones, I had speeds averaging 40 Mbps (that’s 3 times faster than you need) and played RDR2 online with no lag. Since London is close to my actual location, my data doesn’t have to travel very far to reach the server. On the US gaming server, my speed averaged 10 Mbps (15 Mbps is recommended) and I had some lag while playing. CyberGhost only has gaming servers in Western Europe and the US, so if you live far away from these locations you might not get great speeds.

Its streaming optimized servers make unblocking streaming apps easy as well. I just searched “Netflix ” in the search bar and was shown servers dedicated to unblocking Netflix. CyberGhost’s SmartDNS also has DNS addresses for 5 different countries, including the US, UK, and Germany, so you can unblock multiple regions’ content directly on your PlayStation with a really simple setup.

CyberGhost also keeps you safe with military-grade encryption, IP and DNS leak protection, and a built-in automatic kill switch. Your IP is fully masked so no other players on your gaming server will be able to see any of your identifiable information. Just to be sure, I ran 6 of CyberGhost’s gaming servers through leak tests and they all passed — no leaks detected.

I was also lucky enough to get a 85% discount when I signed up. This was a relief because the monthly plan is a bit expensive.

Even better, you can try it free for 45 days with its money-back guarantee. I tested this policy and it was hassle-free. I had my money back in 4 days.

3. Private Internet Access — Huge Server Network Helps Reduce Lag While Gaming

  • Impressive speeds for online gaming and HD streaming
  • 35,550 servers in 78 locations for stable connections
  • AES 256-bit encryption and leak protection to protect you from online threats
  • 10 simultaneous device connections
  • 30-day money-back guarantee
  • Works with: Netflix, BBC iPlayer, HBO Go, Showtime, and more
  • Compatible with: PlayStation, Xbox, Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, routers, and more

July 2021 Update: PIA doesn't usually have deals or discounts (it's already so affordable), but right now you can get a new subscription for a crazy 83% off!

Private Internet Access has impressive speeds because it has 35,550 servers in 78 locations — that’s a lot. Having so many servers to choose from means there will always be one closeby (for low ping and less lag) and you won’t experience slowdowns because of overcrowding. During my speed tests I had an average of 30 Mbps, which is double the 15 Mbps you should have for best performance. I played RDR2 online without any noticeable lag, so you won’t have to worry about choppy gameplay.

PIA fully masks your personal IP address and offers IP and DNS leak protection, so no other players can see your personal info while battling online. I put 7 of its servers through leak tests and they all passed — no IP or DNS leaks were found.

It’s not the easiest VPN to set up on a PlayStation. I was having trouble connecting my console to my PC’s internet, so I had to contact customer support for help. They told me PIA is made to block external connections, so you need to set it up through your router to connect a PS4/PS5. It has guides for 6 types of routers and you can get pre-configured ones, but they were more than $100 when I checked. PIA also doesn’t come with SmartDNS, so you don’t have the option of unblocking streaming apps directly on your console, either.

I was also pleased to get 83% off when I signed up. And keep in mind, if you aren’t sure you want to commit, you can try it free for 30 days using its money-back guarantee. When I tested the refund policy, I got my money back in 8 days. Just be prepared to answer a couple of questions about why you want to cancel.

4. PrivateVPN — Servers Designed to Cut Latency for Battling on International Gaming Servers

  • Good speeds for gaming and streaming on your PS4/PS5
  • AES 256-bit encryption and leak protection protects you from hackers and DDoS attacks
  • 6 simultaneous device connections
  • 30-day money-back guarantee
  • Works with: Netflix, BBC iPlayer, HBO Go, Showtime, and more
  • Compatible with: PlayStation, Xbox, Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, routers, and more

PrivateVPN purchases their IP addresses directly from the IP transit provider instead of through a host company like many VPNs. This means you get a more direct connection that results in faster speeds and less lag (aka. lower ping times). If you want to play games on international gaming servers, this will help you minimize lag caused by the distance your online actions have to travel to get to the server.

I also had impressive speeds using PrivateVPN, on both local and long-distance servers. I tested PrivateVPN’s speeds on the New Jersey server (which is far away from my location in Europe) and I had a reliable 20 Mbps. I played GTAV online with my American friends without any noticeable lag. And with 256-bit encryption, IP and DNS leak protection, and an automatic kill switch I was fully protected from online threats while playing with them.

PrivateVPN was easy to set up by sharing my PC’s internet connection, but there aren’t any guides to help you through the process on its website. However, customer service was really helpful when asked them to walk me through the process and are available through 24/7 live chat. I had my PS4 connected in about 25 minutes. I was a bit disappointed that it doesn’t come with SmartDNS, but its Stealth Mode made it great for bypassing geoblocks for streaming.

It was great to get 77% off my subscription when I signed up as well. In addition, you can also try it for free for 30 days using its money-back guarantee and ask for a full refund if you’re not satisfied. I tested the refund process and after telling support I wasn’t happy with the service, they approved my refund and I had my money back 9 days later.

5. IPVanish — Full Control of Server Selection for Best Gaming Performance

  • Fast speeds for lag-free gaming and bufferless streaming
  • 1,600 servers in 75 locations makes it easy to find the best server for you
  • AES 256-bit encryption and leak protection to protect you from online attacks
  • Unlimited simultaneous device connections
  • 30-day money-back guarantee
  • Works with: US Netflix
  • Compatible with: PlayStation, Xbox, Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux, routers, Fire TV, and more

IPVanish Deal July 2021: It's hard to find active IPVanish offers so I was really surprised to find this one! Click here to get 66% off your IPVanish subscription today! Discount automatically applied (no code required).

IPVanish gives you so much control over server selection. The best way to find the fastest server for gaming is to choose one with the lowest ping (a lower ping gives less lag). Most VPNs will randomly assign you a server when you select a location. IPVanish lets you choose one specifically and shows you the ping beside it, so you can find a really fast, responsive connection for gaming.

As a result, I got impressive speeds while playing Modern Warfare online. When I ran tests, I had an average speed of 29 Mbps, which is almost twice as fast as you need (15 Mbps is enough) and had no noticeable lag.

IPVanish also keeps you well protected with 256-bit encryption, IP and DNS leak protection, and a built-in kill switch. I ran 10 of its servers through leak tests and no IP or DNS leaks were detected, so you’re safe on public gaming servers. It also offers unlimited device connections so you can keep all your devices safe under a single subscription.

While IPVanish offers pre-configured routers and has a handy router app for easy set up, they are a bit expensive. There’s also no SmartDNS to set it up on your PS4/PS5 to unblock streaming apps directly (although it couldn’t unblock many streaming apps anyway).

I was able to get a 66% discount at the time I signed up, which made IPVanish really affordable. To test it out for free for 30 days, you have to subscribe to the yearly plan to qualify for its money-back guarantee. I got my money back easily when I tested the guarantee and only had to explain why I wasn’t satisfied with the service. I got my money back 5 days later.

Tips on How to Choose the Best VPN For PlayStation

All of the VPNs I chose work with both PS4 and PS5. But here are the main factors you should look into when choosing the best PlayStation VPN for you:

  • Fast speeds for gaming and streaming. You need at least 15 Mbps to game online without lag, so you need a VPN with really fast speeds. Each VPN in this list gave me speeds at least twice as fast.
  • High-end security. To stay private and safe while playing games online, it’s best to have a VPN with 256-bit encryption and leak protection to keep your IP address hidden from other players on the game server you’re using. This way you’ll be protected from online threats like DDoS attacks.
  • Large network of servers. You should look for a VPN with a lot of servers located in many different locations. This means there will always be a server closeby for fast speeds and low ping so you get less lag in-game. But it also helps you bypass geoblocks (for streaming apps like Netflix) and gives you access to more international game servers.
  • Easy to set up on PlayStation. You need a VPN that can be set up on PlayStation consoles, so it will need to be router compatible or allow you to share your PC’s VPN connection. I made sure all of the VPNs listed here are PS4/PS5-compatible and have easy setups. I even selected some with Smart DNS, which lets you unblock streaming apps like Netflix and Disney+ directly on your console in a matter of minutes.
Pro Tip: Certain apps are only available in specific PlayStation Stores (you can only download Hulu from the US PS Store, for example). A VPN won’t change your PSN regionyou need to create a new PSN account set to the region you want to access that country’s PlayStation store to download these apps. You can also get games cheaper and earlier by accessing a store that has sales or earlier release dates.

How to Set up a VPN on Your PlayStation Console

There are 3 ways to set up a VPN on your PS4/PS5. The fastest way is using Smart DNS. This will allow you to watch geoblocked streaming apps (like Netflix or Hulu) on your console, but it won’t keep you safe from online threats while gaming online (it doesn’t encrypt your data or mask your IP).

If you want to be fully protected and have full use of your VPN and all its features on your PlayStation, then you can set it up by sharing the VPN connection from your PC or setting it up on your router.

Smart DNS Method

  1. Sign up for a VPN. I recommend ExpressVPN because its MediaStreamer only took a couple of minutes to set up on my PS4.
  2. Register your IP address. Log into your VPN dashboard in your browser and look for an option like “DNS Settings” or “Smart DNS”. Click on that and register your IP address with your VPN provider (this is usually done automatically).
  3. Take note of the DNS code. Once your IP is registered, you’ll see a DNS code. You need to enter this code into your PlayStation’s network settings.
  4. Turn on your PlayStation. Go to Settings > Network > Set up your internet connection > Custom.
  5. Configure your connection. Choose “WiFi” if your PS4/PS5 is connected to the internet over WiFi or “LAN cable” if it’s connected using an ethernet cable. Then choose Automatic > Do Not Specify > Manual (for DNS settings). Input the DNS codes you got in step 3. Then continue the setup and select Automatic > Do Not Use. Select “Test Your Internet Connection” and then restart your console.
  6. Start streaming movies and TV shows! Choose your favorite streaming service and watch shows and movies that aren’t normally available in your location straight from your PS4/PS5!

Windows 10 — Ethernet

  1. Download a VPN. I recommend ExpressVPN because it has a huge server network and lightning-fast speeds for gaming.
  2. Connect your PS4/PS5 to your PC. Use an ethernet to connect your PlayStation to your computer. You can use a second ethernet cable to connect your computer to your router as well — this will give you faster speeds than using a WiFi connection.
  3. Go to Network and Sharing Center. On your PC, navigate to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center.
  4. Share your VPN connection. Click “Change Adapter Settings”. Right-click the adapter with your VPN’s name attached and select Properties > Sharing > Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection. Under “Home Networking Connection”, choose your PS4/PS5’s ethernet connection.
  5. Connect your VPN. Just open your VPN app and connect to the server you want.
  6. Set up your PS4/PS5’s connection. On your console, go to Settings > Network > Connect to the internet > Use a LAN cable > Easy. If prompted, select “Do not use a proxy server”.
  7. Start gaming and streaming! You’ve now connected your PS4/PS5 to your VPN through your PC’s internet connection!

Windows 10 — WiFi

  1. Download a VPN. I recommend ExpressVPN because it has superfast speeds for online battle and unblocks so many popular streaming apps on PS4/PS5.
  2. Turn on mobile hotspot. Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Hotspot and switch mobile hotspot on. Then, set “Share my internet connection from” to “WiFi”.
  3. Create a network name and password. Click “Edit” and enter whatever network name and password you want.
  4. Share your VPN connection. Scroll down and click Related settings > Change adapter options. Right-click on the adapter with your VPN’s name and select Properties > Sharing > Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection. Under “Home Networking Connection”, choose the hotspot connection you created in step 2. It should already be active.
  5. Connect to a server. Open your VPN app and select the server you want.
  6. Set up your PS4/PS5’s network connection. On your PS4/PS5, go to Settings > Network > Connect to the internet > Use WiFi. Find the mobile hotspot you created and enter the password you created in step 3.
  7. Start gaming and streaming! Start gaming safely online or watching shows not normally available in your location with your PlayStation!

Mac — Ethernet or WiFi

  1. Download a VPN. I recommend ExpressVPN because its speeds are more than fast enough for fast-paced shooter games.
  2. Connect your Mac to your PlayStation. Use an ethernet cable. Just skip this step if you’re using Wifi, but if you can connect your Mac to the internet using an ethernet cable, you’ll get better speeds.
  3. Share your internet connection. Go to System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing. Under “Share your connection from”, choose your VPN. Under “To computers using”, choose either WiFi or ethernet, depending on how you’re going to connect your PS4/PS5.
  4. Set up a name and password. (Skip this step if you’re using a LAN cable.) Click “WiFi options” and choose whatever name and password you want for your hotspot. If you see a pop-up that says, “To share your Internet connection, you must turn on WiFi”, click “Turn WiFi On”.
  5. Turn on Internet Sharing. If you get a pop-up that says, “Are you sure you want to turn on Internet sharing?”, click on “Start”.
  6. Connect to a server with your VPN. Just open your VPN on your Mac and connect to the server you want.
  7. Set up your PlayStation’s connection. Go to Settings > Network > Connect to the internet. For WiFi: choose WiFi and connect to the network you set up in step 4. For ethernet: select Use a LAN cable > Easy. Select “Do not use a proxy server” if prompted.
  8. Start gaming and streaming! Your PS4/PS5 is now connected to your Mac’s VPN network!

Router Method

When you set up a VPN on your router, every device connected to it (PS4/PS5 included) will be covered by the VPN as well. Unfortunately, not all routers are compatible with VPNs. If that’s the case for you, then I would recommend the PC method instead.

In addition, every router has a specific set of instructions to get a VPN set up on it. I recommend using ExpressVPN because it has detailed, yet easy-to-follow setup guides on its website (and it’s compatible with 10+ different routers). These instructions are only for setting up ExpressVPN on an ASUS WRT router with OpenVPN firmware already installed.

  1. Log in to your router’s control panel. In the address bar of your browser, type “192.168.1.1”. Enter your username and password (or “admin” for both in case you’ve never logged in to your router before).
  2. Go to the VPN Client tab. Choose “VPN” in the left-hand column, then click on the VPN Client tab. Next, select “Add Profile”.
  3. Enter your VPN’s details. In the pop-up, choose “OpenVPN”. In the “Description” box, name your new VPN connection. Enter your ExpressVPN service credential information (it’s in the dashboard of your ExpressVPN account when you log in from your browser). For auto-reconnection, choose “Yes”.
  4. Download OpenVPN config files. Select a server location and click “download config” to save the file to your computer. UDP is faster than TCP, so I recommend downloading that for the fastest speeds for gaming.
  5. Import the config files. Navigate back to your router’s control panel and click “Choose File” beside the “Import.ovpn file” box and choose the.ovpn file you just downloaded. Click “Upload”. You’ll see a pop-up that says the upload has completed. Uncheck the “Import the CA file or edit the.ovpn file manually” box and click “OK”.
  6. Activate your connection. In the VPN Client tab, you’ll now see your new connection profile. Click on the little “Activate” button next to it.
  7. Start gaming and streaming on your PlayStation! Your PS4/PS5 is now connected to your VPN so you can game safely online!

FAQs on VPNs for PS4 and PS5

Will a VPN unblock Netflix on my PlayStation?

Yes! You can also unblock other regional streaming platforms like BBC iPlayer, Hulu, HBO Max, Amazon Prime, and any other service available on consoles. Many VPNs even offer Smart DNS technology, which is made specifically to unblock streaming apps on devices like gaming consoles without having to set up a full VPN on them. It only took me 2 minutes to set up Smart DNS on my PS4.

Can I set up a VPN on my PS4 or PS5 without a PC?

Possibly. You can set up a mobile hotspot with your smartphone’s mobile data and connect your PlayStation to that connection. You will need to connect your VPN and then connect your PlayStation to the hotspot. You can use any of the VPNs I’ve shortlisted because they’re all compatible with both Android and iOS. But be careful — this will only work if your network has really fast download speeds and could end up costing you a lot of money if you have limited data on your phone plan.

Can I use a free VPN on my PlayStation?

Yes, but I would not recommend it. Technically you can use any VPN that works on your computer and allows external connections — as long as you connect your PlayStation to the internet through your computer. You could do this with a free VPN, but free VPNs usually have limited bandwidth (around 500MB to 1GB per month — that’s enough bandwidth to game for 1-3 hours). They also throttle speeds, have untrustworthy privacy policies, and can come with dangerous malware.

However, you can try any of the VPNs in this list risk-free because they all come with money-back guarantees.

How will a VPN make my PlayStation better?

A VPN can make your console experience so much better for many reasons. As long as your PlayStation VPN meets some important requirements, it helps improve your PS4/PS5 experience because it:

  1. Protects you from DDoS attacks that can crash your game. There are some nasty competitors out there who try to slow your internet connection down by spamming you. When you connect to a VPN, your real IP address is masked so it would be really hard to target you. Even if they could, a VPN’s server network is huge so your connection would be able to handle the incoming spam, anyway.
  2. Gives you access to geoblocked content like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Hulu on your console. If you use your PS4 to stream movies and TV shows, a VPN will grant you access to so much more content since it can bypass geoblocks set by those streaming services.
  3. Can boost your internet speeds by bypassing ISP throttling that some networks have to cap speeds for high-bandwidth activities like gaming. There is also a small possibility that you can reduce your ping or latency (get rid of lag) if you connect your VPN to a server close to the gaming server you want to use. Keep in mind, your download speed will slow down the further away the VPN server is, though, so this requires some trial and error.
  4. Allows you to access international gaming servers. Some games already let you choose a gaming server in another country if you want. However, some will connect you automatically. In that case, if you connect to a VPN server in another country, you’ll then be connected to the gaming server closest to that location.

Keep in mind that you can connect multiple devices with 1 VPN subscription. That means you can take advantage of these benefits on your gaming PC or other consoles, like Xbox One/X/S or Nintendo Switch.

As a side note: it has been rumored that a VPN will also help you buy games from other countries’ PlayStation Stores, but this isn’t true. A VPN won’t change the region of your PSN account. If you want to get games earlier or games that are blocked in your country, you need to create a new PSN account set to the region where the game is available.

Improve Your PS4/PS5 Experience with a VPN Today

If you want to up your PlayStation experience, these VPNs will give you fast speeds for gaming and streaming, keep you protected while gaming online, and are easy to set up. A VPN will not only keep you protected from online threats on shared game servers, but it also allows you to watch geo-restricted shows and movies right from your console.

All of the VPNs in this list are great options for PS4/PS5, but my favorite is ExpressVPN. Its lightning-fast speeds and easy setups made my online gaming safer without slowing down my speeds. Don’t forget you can try it yourself risk-free with its money-back guarantee and ask for a refund if you’re not completely satisfied.
