Pro Tip: TikTok is blocked in some countries. If you are traveling somewhere the app or site isn’t available, you can use a VPN to unblock TikTok and delete your account. ExpressVPN works well with TikTok — simply download the app and connect to a server located in a country where TikTok is available to get access. However, keep in mind that accessing TikTok with a VPN may be illegal in certain countries. Always check your local laws before using a VPN to delete your TikTok account.

Bonus: How to Deactivate a TikTok Account Temporarily

TikTok account deactivation makes your profile and content invisible to other users. You don’t risk losing your data in the same 30-day timeframe as you do with permanent deletion, and you can reactivate your account whenever you’re ready. This is the best option if you merely need a break from the app for an indefinite time.

1. On your Android or iOS app, navigate to Settings and privacy and click Account.

2. Select Deactivate or delete account and tap Deactivate account in the next window.

3. To confirm, click Deactivate and enter your password. Follow the other on-screen instructions to finish.

How to Back Up Account Data From a TikTok Account

If you’d like to permanently close your TikTok account, but you don’t want to lose your account data, I’d highly recommend doing the following before the deletion process completes:

1. Navigate to your TikTok account Settings via the web browser or mobile app.

2. Select Download your data in the Privacy tab. This data can include your profile information (like your username, display picture, and biography) and other details like your contact information, posts and comments history, and your settings preferences.

4. You can download a ZIP archive holding your data from the Privacy tab once it’s ready.

How to Manually Download TikTok Videos

When you back up your data, TikTok doesn’t include any videos you’ve uploaded. It only saves information such as your profile data, app settings, and activity.

All your actual posts are deleted within 30 days of deleting your account (though any videos that have been stitched or duetted by other creators will remain available on the app). Here’s how to manually back up your videos instead:

  • Download via browser: Right-click on a TikTok video in your browser and select Download Video. Choose a name and location, and click Save. You can also download several videos in bulk via online websites like TOKdownloads or SnapTik.
  • Download via Android/iOS: Tap the Share icon on the right of the video and select Save Video. The file will appear in your device’s image gallery.

Recovering a Deleted TikTok Account

To restore a deleted or deactivated TikTok account, simply log in and tap on Reactivate to restore full functionality and data.

Just note that, while deactivated accounts can be restored at any time, you only have 30 days to recover a deleted TikTok account before all your data is wiped permanently.

FAQs on Deleting TikTok

Should I remove TikTok?

The answer depends on several factors, but privacy is a common concern. TikTok is often criticized for collecting too much user data, sharing information with third parties, and requesting excessive device permissions (which you should constantly monitor). If you value your online privacy, it can be a good idea to delete TikTok.

Many governments also recommend deleting TikTok accounts from work devices for security purposes. That’s because TikTok’s owner — ByteDance — is a Chinese company with alleged ties to the Beijing government.

Besides privacy concerns, there are a few other good reasons to delete TikTok. The app can be addictive and time-consuming, affecting productivity and focus. Studies have shown that short-form video content can also negatively affect your attention span.

Why can’t I delete my TikTok account?

You can’t delete your TikTok account if it’s banned or lacks contact information. Entering your phone number and email allows you to quickly delete your TikTok account. If you’re banned, you must either wait for the suspension to be lifted or contact TikTok support to appeal. The support department usually responds within a week.

Poor internet connection can also affect the deletion process, as can attempting to delete your account when TikTok is down. If you’re getting any glitches or long delays in the process, it can be a good idea to try again another time or when you have a better connection. Deleting TikTok through a web browser, updating the app, or logging out and back in again can help too.

If you’re still having issues, contact TikTok support. They should be able to find a solution that works for you.

Will deleting TikTok erase my messages and comments?

Deleting your TikTok account also means you can longer access your comments or messages. If you want to preserve your comments, drafts, and other information before deleting TikTok, you should back up your TikTok account data.

Alternatively, it’s possible to delete comments in bulk without deleting your account. Tap the Comments button on the side of a video, select the Filters button, and select up to 100 comments for deletion.

Unfortunately, messages can’t be unsent on TikTok. So deleting your account won’t delete your DMs to other users — you won’t be able to access these messages, but they will.

Does leaving TikTok delete all my videos?

Deleting your TikTok account erases all your videos after 30 days. That’s why it’s best to download all your TikTok videos manually before going ahead with the deletion. You can reactivate your account within the 30 days if you forget to save your content.

How long does it take to delete a TikTok account?

TikTok account takes 30 days to delete completely. Your videos, comments, and profile are hidden from other users during this period. However, reactivating your account within 30 days will restore all of your content.

How can I restore my TikTok account access?

Try resetting your password using the phone number or email address you used to register your TikTok account. Select your username on the app, click Forgot password?, and follow the on-screen instructions to regain access to your TikTok account. If that won’t work for you, you can also try logging in with a linked social media account or contacting TikTok support.

Delete TikTok Accounts Safely

Deleting your TikTok account is easy, but the process is irreversible after 30 days. Make sure to back up your data and download your favorite videos before deletion. That way, you don’t risk losing anything important when you leave TikTok. Remember, if you just want to take a break from the app, be sure to consider temporarily deactivating your account instead.
