How to Watch Amazon Prime Video With a VPN in 2024

James Everard Updated on 13th June 2024 Fact-checked by Emma Browne Senior Writer

A VPN can be useful for watching Amazon Prime Video (APV) in several ways. For example, it can help if your internet service provider (ISP) throttles your speeds when it detects you watching APV. It hides what you do online so your ISP can’t see that you’re streaming. Plus, it encrypts your data, which makes it useless for advertisers.

You can also theoretically use a VPN to watch content from a different APV region. That’s because it can give you an IP address from another country. However, accessing content in this way goes against Amazon’s terms of service. It can also amount to copyright infringement, which the team and I don’t recommend.

For streaming TV episodes and movies safely in the best quality, ExpressVPN is the best bet for APV. It’s the fastest VPN I’ve tested, allowing you to maintain full HD or even Ultra HD speeds. It’s also risk-free to test it for yourself — if you’re not completely satisfied, you’re covered by a reliable 30-day money-back guarantee. Editors' Note: Expressvpn and this site are in the same ownership group.

Quick Guide: How to Watch Amazon Prime Video With a VPN in 3 Easy Steps

  1. Download a VPN. For bufferless Ultra HD streaming on Amazon Prime Video, I recommend ExpressVPN.
  2. Connect to a local server. Choose a server in your country to get the best speeds. This also makes sure you can still use your Amazon Prime Video account with your regional library.
  3. Start watching Amazon Prime Video. Log in to your APV account — you can now start streaming in the best available quality without handing your data over to third-party advertisers.
Important: The vpnMentor team and I oppose copyright infringement. The VPNs we recommend have robust no-logs policies, meaning they won’t monitor or record your online activities. So, it’s up to you to use a VPN responsibly. Always observe Prime Video’s terms of use, and utilize your VPN within the bounds of the laws in your region.

Best VPNs to Watch Prime Video Online in 2024

1. ExpressVPN — The Fastest Service for Prime Video With Ultra HD-Friendly Speeds

Best Feature The fastest speeds we tested, so you’ll get buffer-free Prime Video viewing on local servers
Server Network 3,000 servers in 105 countries for watching APV without lag caused by server congestion
Works With Prime Video UK and US, primevideo.com, DAZN, YouTube TV, Disney+, Netflix, and more
Compatible With Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, Amazon Fire devices, Chrome, Firefox, Apple TV, routers, and more
Editors' Note: Expressvpn and this site are in the same ownership group.

ExpressVPN offers Ultra HD-friendly speeds, making it ideal for streaming APV. During my tests from the UK, Mr. & Mrs. Smith loaded instantly, even when I turned up the quality to Ultra HD on my Android smartphone. My colleague in New York reported similar results, too. It has servers in many regions where APV is available, so you’re bound to find a nearby one in your country to watch APV with no lag or buffering.

Screenshot showing the ExpressVPN app connected to a server in New York over a browser streaming on Prime VideoAll of ExpressVPN's servers support streaming so you won't have to hunt for specialty servers

It also works really reliably with Amazon Prime Video. With other VPNs, I often had to waste time finding working servers, but that wasn’t the case here. In my tests, I set up ExpressVPN and started watching APV in under 2 minutes. Plus, my colleagues in Germany, Australia, and Japan had no issues with the Prime Video libraries in their respective regions.

It also enables you to view APV on gadgets that usually don't support VPN apps. For instance, its MediaStreamer feature is compatible with smart TVs and gaming consoles. However, be aware that MediaStreamer currently only works with the US version of Prime Video. If you want to watch on Apple TV, ExpressVPN has a native app for it, making setup quite straightforward.

True, it’s not the cheapest — plans start at $6.67/month. It regularly offers discounts, though; when I signed up, I got 3 months of free service. Plus, when I worked out the monthly cost, it was less than my Prime subscription. You can also try ExpressVPN risk-free since it’s backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee. I tested it out via 24/7 live chat, and it was easy.

Useful Features

  • Proprietary Lightway protocol. Most VPNs use box-standard protocols like OpenVPN or WireGuard, but ExpressVPN built Lightway from scratch to ensure the code is lightweight and handles data fast. It even preserves battery when watching Prime Video on mobile devices.
  • Threat Manager. There are a ton of fake Prime Video phishing emails and websites in circulation. Threat Manager helps limit the threat of viruses and malware on these sites, so you’ve got extra protection in case you accidentally click on one.
  • Full-function browser extensions. Most VPNs offer free or severely limited browser extensions, but ExpressVPN has fully functioning extensions for Chrome and Firefox. It’s ideal if you prefer to stream APV safely on either browser.
  • Shortcuts. Save one-click shortcuts to Prime and other favorite apps and sites, and they will show up on the ExpressVPN home screen. So, after a long day at work or school, you can start watching exactly where you left off in just a few clicks.
ExpressVPN Offer June 2024: For a limited time only, you can get an ExpressVPN subscription for up to 49% off! Don't miss out!

2. Private Internet Access (PIA) — Unlimited VPN Connections for Households of Prime Video Fans

Best Feature Thanks to PIA’s unlimited device connections, no one has to stream Prime Video (or any other platform) without protection
Server Network An astonishing 29,650 servers in 91 countries ensures you can find a fast local connection in every APV country
Works With Prime Video UK and US, primevideo.com, Disney+, Netflix, and more
Compatible With Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, Amazon Fire devices, routers, and more
Editors' Note: Private Internet Access and this site are in the same ownership group.

PIA is great for a houseful of streaming fans with its unlimited device connections — you can watch APV while protecting your data, no matter how many people in your household are using their devices. From the UK, I tested this by streaming Prime Video on my MacBook Pro, iMac, and iPhone simultaneously while my roommates used their devices, and none of us noticed any connection interruptions.

Screenshot showing the PIA app connected to the UK Streaming Optimized server over Saltburn streaming on a web browserPIA has streaming-optimized servers in 12 locations

There are streaming-optimized servers for 12 regions — including the US, Canada, UK, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, and Australia. PIA’s UK server also worked well with other streaming platforms. During my tests in London, I could jump from Prime Video to Netflix without switching servers or settings.

One minor issue with PIA is that it has many configuration options that can be a bit overwhelming for VPN newcomers. That said, the app's default settings are ideal for streaming, so there's no need to change any of the options if you don’t want to. And if you’re a techie like me, you’ll enjoy adjusting your speed and security to your liking.

You can try PIA with APV for free using a 30-day money-back guarantee. I went for a long-term plan at $2.03/month, saving 83% over the short-term option, plus I got 4 months free. I tried the guarantee myself via 24/7 live chat, and it was just as quick and easy as with ExpressVPN.

Useful Features

  • Split Tunnel. Nominate apps to bypass the VPN to free up more bandwidth for your Prime Video sessions, which is ideal if you’ve got a slower base connection and need to make every available Mbps count.
  • Kill switch. If privacy is a concern, PIA can cut out your internet connection if the VPN drops unexpectedly, which is rare. This is useful for watching Prime Video over unsecured networks such as public WiFi hotspots.
June 2024 Update: PIA doesn't usually have deals or discounts (it's already so affordable), but right now you can get a new subscription for a crazy 83% off!

3. CyberGhost — Intuitive VPN With Prime Video-Optimized Servers

Best Feature Optimized Prime Video servers provide reliable connections for several licensed regions, so you don’t have to guess which is the best option for you
Server Network 11,690 servers in 100 countries, including servers optimized for streaming, torrenting, and gaming that make it easy to secure your data
Works With Prime Video US, primevideo.com, DAZN, Disney+, Netflix, and more
Compatible With Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, Amazon Fire devices, routers, Apple TV, and more
Editors' Note: CyberGhost VPN and this site are in the same ownership group.

CyberGhost offers optimized servers for Prime Video and several other platforms, which makes it super easy to find the most reliable connection for the platform. The streaming-optimized servers are neatly organized in their own tab, so you just need to find the APV server for your country and click the power button. You can also click the star next to each server to add them to your favorites list, making them even easier to find next time.

Screenshot showing how to locate CyberGhost's Prime Video serversCyberGhost has working servers for Prime Video in 6 locations

Speeds are also a shade slower than ExpressVPN, but it’s still more than enough to stream Prime Video in Ultra HD. Everything I tried to watch loaded in a few seconds, and there was next to no pause between episodes of Invincible, so I could binge-watch knowing that I wasn’t giving Amazon any more of my personal data.

Unfortunately, the UK Prime Video server didn’t work during my tests from London. However, my international colleagues confirmed that all of CyberGhost’s other APV servers worked perfectly in their licensed regions.

CyberGhost offers great value for money for streaming fans with long-term plans starting from just $2.03/month. Plus, you get a 45-day refund guarantee period (longer than the industry-standard 30 days).

Useful Features

  • Torrenting-optimized servers. As well as the specialty streaming servers, CyberGhost offers servers optimized for downloading in 80+ locations. If you want to download the Prime Videos you rent or buy, these are optimized to give you the best speeds possible.
  • Startup rules. Nominate an app to launch when you connect to CyberGhost. I selected Safari and made Prime Video my homepage. Now, APV is waiting whenever I log on.
June 2024 Deal: CyberGhost is currently offering 84% off its most popular plan! Take advantage of this offer now and save more on your CyberGhost subscription.

How to Watch Amazon Prime Video on Different Devices With a VPN

Watch Prime Video on Your Phone, Laptop, and Fire Stick

  1. Choose a reliable VPN. Selecting a good VPN ensures privacy when watching Amazon Prime Video.
  2. Install the VPN app. Then, set the app up. If your VPN supports features like auto-connection, I recommend turning these on to make sure your device is always protected when you’re online.
  3. Connect to a nearby server. Pick a server in your local Amazon region to enjoy Prime Video with UHD-friendly speeds without handing your data over to advertisers.
  4. Sign in to Amazon Prime Video. With the VPN active, log in to enjoy your Prime Video library.

Watch Prime Video on TV, Roku, Apple TV, and Gaming Consoles

  1. Look for a VPN that’s router-compatible. Not all VPNs work with all types of routers. I recommend looking for a VPN that offers custom router firmware and a native router app, as it’ll save you the time-consuming process of manual installation. ExpressVPN is one of the rare ones that offers both of these things.
  2. Install a VPN on your router. The steps will differ depending on your router model, so you’ll need to consult the VPN’s website for step-by-step instructions. Once you’re done, every device on your network is protected by the VPN.
  3. Connect your TV or another device to the VPN-enabled network. This extends VPN benefits to devices like Roku and Apple TV. Select a server on your router that is within the same country as you.
  4. Watch Prime Video on your device. You can now watch The Boys, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Alex Rider, and more in HD without sacrificing your privacy.

Where Can I Watch Amazon Prime Video Online?

That depends on the licensed region you’re watching from. If you’re in the UK or US, then you’ll be able to watch Prime Video through the regular Amazon site. However, if you’re in one of the 200+ other licensed countries, then you’ll have to go to primevideo.com. These are the direct sources for Prime content, and you won’t be able to find Prime Video or Freevee originals anywhere else.

Prime Video isn’t available everywhere, however. It’s unavailable or blocked in Mainland China, Russia, North Korea, Cuba, Vietnam, Syria, Iran, Sudan, and Belarus.

The content that’s available for you to watch depends on your location. Amazon Prime Video is only licensed under copyright law to broadcast content in select regions.

Prime Video determines your regular location by the main delivery address you have set in your Amazon account and your current location by your IP address. If this information doesn’t match, it will adjust your library to only include titles that are available to stream outside of your licensed location.

Screenshot showing the error screen when you're outside your regular Amazon regionYou'll be able to watch a limited selection of Amazon and Freevee Originals if you're not in your regular location

“Based outside the U.S.? Some titles might be unavailable in your current location. Go to amazon.co.uk to see the video catalog available in United Kingdom.”

You might also see a shorter, more succinct error message when you try to watch content that isn’t licensed for your location:

“This video is currently unavailable to watch in your location”

How to Get Amazon Prime Video in Different Countries

In the US and UK

  1. Go to Amazon’s main site. Go to amazon.com in the US or amazon.co.uk in the UK.
  2. Sign in or create an account. Use your regular account details to sign in.
  3. Navigate to the Prime Video page. In the US and UK, Prime Video is on Amazon’s main site. There may be a Prime Video menu item, or you may have to click All > Digital Content & Devices > Prime Video.
  4. Stream whichever content you prefer. Choose a title and watch it on your device.

In the Rest of the World

  1. Go to the Prime Video site. If you’re not in the US or UK, go to primevideo.com.
  2. Log into your account. Your login details should be the same as on the main Amazon site. If you don’t have an account, you’ll need to sign up for one.
  3. Watch your desired content. Select a title and watch it in your browser.

Can I Still Watch Amazon Prime Video if I Move Region?

If you move to another region, you can still enjoy content on Prime Video. You’ll need to change your Amazon delivery address to that of your new home; otherwise, Prime Video will only show you the content that’s licensed for viewing while traveling, which is a very limited list.

On the Amazon homepage, simply click your delivery address in the header to update your details. You can do it in under a minute.

FAQs on Watching APV With a VPN

Can I use a VPN to watch Prime Video on a Fire Stick or Fire TV?

Yes — many VPNs offer native apps for Fire devices. To install them, it’s as simple as going to the Amazon Appstore on your Fire device and downloading the app. If your VPN doesn’t have a native app for Fire devices, then a workaround is to connect your Fire Stick or Fire TV to a VPN-enabled hotspot. Simply connect your VPN on your computer, create a WiFi hotspot, and connect the Fire device to that.

What if Amazon Prime Video isn't working with my VPN?

Firstly, make sure the VPN you’ve chosen actually works with APV at all. Our top VPNs have all been tried and tested to work, but even the best VPNs can struggle with Amazon’s advanced blocks.

Other fixes you can try include:

  • Switch servers. APV actively blocks some VPN IP addresses. Try a different location in your country to find a working IP address for your region or just reconnect to change the current IP of the chosen location.
  • Adjust the VPN settings. I recommend using a VPN with a premium protocol like Lightway or WireGuard for watching APV. The standard OpenVPN is slower and much easier to block.
  • Use a different viewing method. For example, if you’re using the Amazon app, try logging in on a web browser. You can also try logging in on another device.
  • Contact support. Your VPN’s customer support may be able to suggest a workaround, or you can report the issue so it can be resolved.

Can I watch Amazon Prime Video for free?

Yes. While APV is a subscription service, it offers some ad-supported free content on its Freevee channel. Just note that Freevee is only available in the US, the UK, Germany, and Austria.

In some regions, you may also be able to get a free trial of Amazon Prime, which lets you watch all of your region’s Prime Video content for free for a limited time.

Why is Prime Video’s VPN blocking so strong?

APV’s VPN blocking is notoriously stringent to protect copyright. Distributors often require Amazon to geo-restrict content to protect regional rights. Theoretically, VPNs can let users watch content outside licensed regions, so Amazon employs technology to detect and block them to adhere to these contracts.

This makes it tricky to watch APV from within a licensed region with a VPN to protect your data. However, my international colleagues and I found that the VPNs in this list work reliably with the platform.

Can I watch Prime videos with Amazon Prime?

Yes, you can watch Prime Video with your Amazon Prime account. Your subscription lets you watch a wide range of TV shows, movies, and Amazon Originals. However, the availability of content can vary by region due to licensing restrictions. In most of the world, you can now subscribe to Prime Video as a standalone service (without next-day delivery, Amazon Music, etc.).

How do I watch Prime Video without ads?

To watch Prime Video without ads, you can pay a small additional monthly fee. Your Amazon Prime subscription still provides access to an extensive library of movies and TV shows, you may now encounter ads during some content. That’s why I recommend using a VPN while you watch Prime Video in your country — it protects you from Amazon and third-party services harvesting your data for targeted advertising.

Can I watch Prime Video offline?

Yes, you can safely download Prime Video content to watch offline on compatible devices. This is particularly useful for watching your favorite shows or movies while traveling or in areas with limited internet connectivity. However, there are limitations on how long you have to watch downloaded content and on how many devices you use.

Is it legal to watch Amazon Prime Video from another country?

Watching Prime Video from another country is legally problematic in most instances, so I don’t recommend it. It violates Prime Video's terms of use, may constitute copyright infringement, and could lead to Amazon restricting access to its service if it detects you using a VPN to do this. Please be responsible and use your VPN only to protect your privacy on Prime Video.

However, Prime Video does permit watching select content while you’re traveling. If it detects that you’re outside of the country where your Prime account is registered, it will display a limited “Watch While Abroad” selection. You can also download certain titles (including rented or purchased content) to watch offline while you’re abroad.

Can I use a free VPN to watch Prime Video?

You can try to use a free VPN to watch Prime Video, but I don’t recommend it. Free VPNs often have limited server options and bandwidth, causing slower streaming speeds and lag. Moreover, free VPNs are more likely to be detected and blocked because they don’t have the technology to invest in keeping up with Amazon’s blocks. For a more reliable experience, invest in a low-cost premium VPN for Prime Video instead.

Watch Prime Video in Minutes

Even some of the best VPNs struggle to work with Prime Video. That’s why my team and I tested all the leading VPNs to find the ones that let you watch Amazon Prime Video in the best quality. All my recommendations work with multiple Prime Video libraries with Ultra HD-friendly speeds.

ExpressVPN is my #1 choice for watching Amazon Prime Video. It’s easy to use and allows for consistent buffer-free streaming, even in UHD. You can try ExpressVPN with zero risk because it comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
