    Which VPN is better?

Even though CyberGhost and PIA have a lot to offer their users, they are two wildly different VPNs.

CyberGhost is significantly more expensive, and you get a few great bonuses for the extra cost — like live chat, impressive server speeds, and access to a wide array of streams and services including Netflix, Hulu, and BBC. Configuration is a breeze, thanks to the innovative interface divided in several profiles for all your needs.

PIA is hailed as the ultimate budget VPN by many. It’s ridiculously cheap and performs better than plenty of “premium” services, but it has some rough edges — among them are rather slow customer support and shaky speeds in some locations.

The main drawback: PIA is headquartered in the United States. Although it’s a reputable provider with a strict zero-logs policy, there’s always a risk under these circumstances. CyberGhost offers greater peace of mind with its base of operations in Romania.

Still, both VPNs have huge server networks, excellent apps for all major platforms, and user-friendly refund policies. CyberGhost is objectively better with a 30-day refund window, compared to PIA’s one-week money-back guarantee, but the real contest between these two boils down to what you want out of your VPN — and how much you’re willing to pay for it.

CyberGhost is one of the most affordable VPNs on the market — you can get a subscription for as low as $2.19/month. I sometimes assume that price indicates quality, but with VPNs, I've been proven wrong before. So I wanted to see whether CyberGhost can really deliver at such a low price. I did a deep dive into CyberGhost’s privacy policy and security measures to determine whether it’s secu...

    Mostly Works

So far, the basic functions seem to be working fine. What isn't working is that the program will not ... automatically reconnect my computer to the internet after CG has "blocked" a connection. I don't know why it is blocking the connection nor does CG explain exactly what happened (or didn't happen). Instead, I get two choices (which can't remember what they are) in order to reconnect to the internet. I don't understand what the choices are nor do I understand why I have to choose. IMHO, the core functionality should be that CG is constantly trying to reconnect me to the internet and I shouldn't have to tell it to do that. It's like stopping at a stop light and having to wait for someone to give me permission to go again when the light turns green; the default state should simply be "Go".More

    ABSOLUTE GARBAGE

Literally has not worked at all. The "support" is utterly useless. Tried all their "solutions" and no ... difference. Now they won't give me a refund. I paid $90 for a product that hasn't worked. Avoid this product like the plague.More

Private Internet Access has one of the cheapest VPN subscriptions available — you can sign up for as little as $2.19/month. With such a low price, I wondered whether PIA could really stand out against its higher-priced competitors. It’s been around for 10+ years, so it could be one of the best-value VPNs out there. I decided to find out just how good it is by looking into the company’s lo...

    Best VPN I have used

I have been using PIA for three years and I have been very pleased. My internet connection is 270MB up...  and 270MB down. I get on average 250MB up and 250MB down. I have found that turning on the wire guard speeds up my internet speed by 50mb.More

PIA is a perfect backdoor to your computer

Briefly said, all my accounts were compromised few days after PIA installation only on Chrome, includi... ng services that I have never used like Facebook Ads (corrupted from far far away in Kazakstan). Yesterday, someone changed my PIA email for a one-shot usage email @yopmail.com and stole around 100 euros on my VISA for payment to PIA - Private Internet Access. There is no doubt that PIA is a perfect and complete security hole direct to your computer and personal stuff.More

    Best VPN by category

If you want solid encryption, variety in servers, and decent speeds for cheap, you can’t go wrong with PIA. But if ease of use and effortless unblocking are priorities for you, CyberGhost offers a better all-around package — for a price.

CyberGhost allows P2P on select servers, making it more than suitable for torrenting. So does PIA but it also offers port forwarding, which is very impressive for a budget VPN. However, PIA does have US headquarters, so there's a higher risk of DMCA requests.

CyberGhost allows for both manual and automatic configuration, thanks to its handy profiles. It also has plenty of features and settings for extra protection, heavy censorship, and better accessibility. PIA is a simple yet effective VPN on Windows, but it requires some more manual input.

CyberGhost doesn’t sacrifice performance or utility on mobile — its Android app is stellar and more feature-packed than many competing VPNs. PIA is also great on Android for what you’re paying, but it lacks the depth and options you’ll find in CyberGhost.

Admittedly, CyberGhost offers a bit less on Mac, compared to Windows. However, the core arsenal of features is there, and it performs flawlessly. PIA won’t disappoint you either, with a well-equipped Mac client, but a bit less functionality on average.

CyberGhost’s recent upgrades to its iOS app have skyrocketed the VPN’s performance on Apple devices. PIA is consistently good, but with just five simultaneously connected devices, it’s a bit behind CyberGhost’s seven allowed connections.

Both PIA and CyberGhost have a huge server presence in the United States. However, the latter will also unblock tricky US-restricted websites and services like Netflix. PIA is a great alternative for users in need of excellent encryption and basic unblocking.

    The Bottom Line

Despite CyberGhost scoring better in all categories, PIA isn’t too far behind. It all comes down to your specific needs against your budget — if you want to pay a bit more for a VPN that does everything well, there’s a clear favorite. Still, PIA is ideal for cheap, but reliable protection and occasional unblocking. You won’t get too much advanced functionality, but if you don’t need it in the first place, chances are you won’t notice the difference.
