NordVPN vs PrivateVPN 2022

After comparing these VPNs, we have a winner!

Which VPN is better?

These two VPNs share many similar features, including log-free policies, kill switches, DNS leak protection, torrent support, multi-platform compatibility, and a variety of protocols. In addition, both providers offer six simultaneous connections with one subscription, which is great for families. Sweden-based PrivateVPN battles hard in this comparison as a reliable tool to sail across the web anonymously, with strong encryption and stable connections. Nevertheless, it falls behind Panamá-based NordVPN’s almost flawless performance and vast array of features and add-ons. NordVPN gains an edge with Double VPN (two-layered) encryption and advanced security tools such as malware protection, an ad blocker, and Tor over VPN. On the other hand, PrivateVPN beats NordVPN’s prices by keeping its service simpler without sacrificing reliability. While both VPNs bypass tough geo-restrictions and work in China, NordVPN has a far larger server network – over 5,000 servers, compared to about 100 for PrivateVPN. It’s also easier to get support with NordVPN, which has an excellent live chat channel. However, only PrivateVPN offers a TeamViewer feature, which gives you direct access to tech staff for remote installation and setup help.

It’s not often that a VPN has cheap prices coupled with an excellent set of features. Yet, when my team and I looked at what NordVPN has to offer, this is exactly what we found. It offers a huge global network of servers, unblocks hundreds of streaming platforms, and has iron-clad security and privacy features — and you can get it all for just $3.30/month. I had to wonder what the catch was. ...

For NordVPN-Android – NordVPN cannot

There is no Caveat Emptor here, nothing like that at all. Nothing to worry about because NordVPN has ... a top-notch of KillSwitch. It has never faltered in my case. Some instances that NordVPN connection is lost for like 10 seconds while I'm "incognito" in a streaming site, I immediately check with the site with regards to my interrupted connection and my real location did not register ;-) This happened a handful of times in fact. NordVPN will not leave you out in the cold so to speak ;-) Just that since this is a review, it must be noted since features are being enumerated that Split Tunneling and KillSwitch cannot be enabled at the same time. It's either you use one or the other. KillSwitch is not possible if you need to exclude an app from using VPN which means to Split Tunneling. Crypto wallet apps and apps that refuse to use VPN tunnel are such examples. "Block Connections Without VPN" being 1 of 2 conditions that must be met to be able to utilize KillSwitch, and KillSwitch will not work if Split Tunneling is enabled. Ergo, - It's either All apps are Blocked without VPN or No Apps are Blocked at all. I thought pausing the VPN from its Notification will take care of this but in all my Android devices that have NordVPN the pausing from the notification does not work which makes me wonder if pausing/disconnecting from notification is a feature that works in Android.More

Skip it.

Skip Nord! They make you disable the kill switch to log in. Which was not always the case. So you have...  to be careful every time you log in. You do not want to have a leak just because you forgot the kill switch was off.More

PrivateVPN is a growing provider that claims to be a great VPN for security and privacy, as the name implies. Instead of offering a long list of unique features, this VPN sells itself as a simple but high-performing service. We put PrivateVPN through a series of tests to find out how it performs in each category and whether it will truly keep you safe and private. PrivateVPN’s strength...

Comparatively Slow, but otherwise good product

It allowed my Plex to be accessed from outside of my network. That's a plus. It was much cheaper t... han the service I was already using (Express VPN). Another plus. Although everyone talks about how this service has fewer access points, they had enough close to me to not be a problem. Yay! And that may be enough for you. Here's my problem with this service: Baseline Internet Test Speed for download, NO VPN (server in Dallas): 446.2 Mbps Express VPN Internet Test Speed for download (server in Dallas): 292.6 Mbps PrivateVPN Internet Test Speed for download (server in Dallas): 53.3 Mbps Other locations were even worse (Atlanta: 50.1 Mbps, Phoenix: 46.0 Mbps) Basically, while using PrivateVPN, I'm wasting my money on a high-speed bandwidth service. That's the same speed I was getting when I only had 100 Mbps service. Express VPN did not support IP pass-through, which broke my Plex access, so it's not even an option for me anymore. But I'm going to keep looking for another service with a better download speed than this one.More

Best VPNs by category

NordVPN has been our Editor’s Choice for two years thanks to its impeccable performance, sturdy security measures, and long list of user-focused features. It also give you access to an enormous number of ultra-fast servers optimized for different activities. Meanwhile, PrivateVPN is a small wonder, delivering consistently high speeds and reliable geoblock bypassing with a network of only about 100 servers across 56 countries.

PrivateVPN supports torrenting on all its servers, while NordVPN allows torrenting only on specific servers. However, because NordVPN has a much larger server network overall, it actually offers more servers for P2P activities than PrivateVPN, and these servers are optimized for file sharing. In addition, NordVPN delivers higher connection speeds on average.

Both PrivateVPN and NordVPN rely on simple design for their Windows apps. Both apps are user-friendly and equipped with key security features like DNS leak protection and a kill switch. However, NordVPN takes ease of use a step further with a map display that makes choosing a server location one-click simple.

NordVPN and PrivateVPN have dedicated Android apps that are easy to install and use. Both support OpenVPN and have public wi-fi protection. However, NordVPN pushes ahead in this category with a more stable and feature-rich Android app that works equally well for secure browsing, torrenting, and HD streaming.

Both NordVPN and PrivateVPN have MacOS apps that closely resemble their Windows clients in features and interface. However, NordVPN’s SmartPlay feature makes it easy to get the most out of your Mac’s HD display when you stream geo-restricted content.

Private VPN surpasses most VPNs by combining most of the VPN’s features into a user-friendly iOS app. The app’s layout is clean and basic, giving you easy control over connections and other settings. NordVPN, on the other hand, raises the bar even higher with an iOS app featuring one-click server selection on a world map display. Both apps use the secure IKEv2 protocol and allow you to create an OpenVPN connection manually.

With both NordVPN and PrivateVPN, you can easily access geoblocked American streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. However, NordVPN operates over 1,800 servers within the US alone, while Private VPN operates a smaller US server network across nine locations. NordVPN’s massive network prevents high server loads, giving the provider a significant advantage when it comes to connection speeds.

The Bottom Line

Private VPN competes strongly with a reliable, fast, and affordable VPN service. If you’re on a tight budget and are okay with a slightly stripped-down service that still offers military-grade encryption, leak prevention, and a kill switch, PrivateVPN is a great choice. However, it simply doesn’t offer the same range of features as a giant like NordVPN. NordVPN’s location in Panamá is excellent for privacy lovers. The VPN’s impressive suite of built-in cybersecurity features, including ad blocking, is ideal for both business and personal use. Online streamers love the speed and simplicity of NordVPN’s SmartPlay feature, and torrenters appreciate two-layered encryption and access to hundreds of optimized P2P servers. VPN newcomers also find NordVPN’s feature-packed apps more visually appealing than Private VPN’s relatively basic interface. PrivateVPN is one of our top-rated providers for good reason, but it’s difficult to knock out a VPN with almost no weaknesses. As it usually does, NordVPN comes out on top.
