Both NordVPN and Proton VPN are privacy-friendly VPNs with top-notch security features. They use no-logs policies and military-grade AES-256 encryption to keep you safe online. Regarding compatibility with mobile and desktop operating systems, both offer dedicated apps for all major platforms. However, there are significant differences between the two.

NordVPN has a more extensive network of 5,384 servers in 60 countries. Proton VPN has less than half the number of servers, but they're located in a few more countries (67). NordVPN is slightly better priced, offering more promotions and discount deals. But Proton VPN provides more device connections per license — 10 compared to NordVPN's 6. On the surface, NordVPN looks like a really impressive service. It claims to have a huge global server network, the ability to unblock tons of streaming platforms, and iron-clad security and privacy features. Plus, you can get it all for just $3.49/month. That all sounds great, but is there a catch? To find out, I did an in-depth analysis of NordVPN. I tested its speeds and how well it performs...

Best documentation was easy to understand

I came from Surfshark which never worked correctly. I had to run from the browser extension with supp... ort telling me it was my network that was causing the problem. That was rubbish. I set Nord up and had it running in a short time from the documentation. I only had to ask support about accessing more servers than just the one I saw. Great product.More

Average service, some nice features, rubbish support

Basic features work really well. Basically. I liked the feature that when Nord crashes (as it seems to...  do monthly) it will shut other apps so they aren't exposed. My subscription is based in Australia. Found downloads peak at about 1-1.5Mb/s, which is ok as long as you aren't playing online games. Don't go for the frills (though hard not to when they gamify them). I canceled my subscription because I added the Kill switch and then MFA. Nek Minnit I can't even log in. No way to remove the Kill switch without logging in. Uninstalled, reinstalled no joy. Went to the help page, and it redirected me to up my subscription as the only solution. No chatbot where I am. and I don't have an email app so couldn't email help. After a couple of hours of mucking around. Gave up and went to a competitor. Note: if I hadn't played with the security settings, I would still be with Nord. But if I can't log in, it's a dead service to me.More

As a long-time customer of ProtonMail, I was curious to see whether its world-renowned privacy and security standards would carry over into its sister product, Proton VPN. The CERN scientists behind the world-class encrypted email technology have a lot of competition amongst premium VPNs. I wondered if these privacy pros could offer any new, innovative features that aren’t already available wit...

    The best VPN to use

I’ve used a few VPN. Torguard, Wevpn, hide.me, Nord, Surfshark, Mullvad, and nothing compares to Proto... nvpn. Fast, consistent connections, easy-to-use app, and streaming work brilliant, better than Nord or Surfshark. The best of the best.More

    SCAM, FRAUD, DISHONEST, NON-FUNCTIONAL

LYING ABOUT 30 DAY REFUND. WROTE THEM 2 TIMES TO CXL AFTER 10 DAYS. NO REPLY. YOU CAN DOWNGRADE ON THE... IR SITE, BUT.... REFUNDS WILL BE APPLIED AS CREDITS! I DON'T WANT TO BE ON THE SAME PLANET WITH THEM. WHY WOULD I WANT CREDITS? JUST AS HORRIBLE AS EVERY OTHER VPN FOR MAC. OF COURSE, THEY DON'T MENTION IT ON THEIR SITE BUT RECOMMEND TUNNELBICK OR WHATEVER IT'S CALLED, WHICH DOESN'T CONNECT. SWISS CAN BE JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.More

    Best VPN by category

With over 5,384+ servers worldwide (far more than Proton VPN), robust security and privacy features, and reasonable prices, NordVPN comes out on top. Proton VPN doesn't offer 24/7 customer support — it's only available between 9 AM to 5 PM (CEST).

NordVPN offers unlimited bandwidth and excellent speeds on thousands of servers optimized for torrenting. Proton VPN also supports P2P file-sharing but has a much smaller network with slower download and upload speeds.

NordVPN provides a dedicated Windows app that’s very user-friendly, easy to set up, and supports OpenVPN. Proton VPN also has a dedicated Windows app with strong encryption, but it’s not as user-friendly.

If you’d like to stream content from your Android device, NordVPN’s dedicated app offers super-fast speed and unlimited bandwidth. Plus, its NordLynx protocol drains less phone battery. The app is also pretty easy to set up. Proton VPN also provides a very secure Android app with support for multiple protocols but with fewer servers and no kill switch.

NordVPN for Mac provides users with enhanced security features like Threat Protection, which effectively blocks malware and ads. Meanwhile, Proton VPN offers a straightforward service for Mac but without an ad blocker. There’s no split tunneling with Proton VPN's Mac app, either.

NordVPN has a very intuitive iOS app with double encryption and an automatic kill switch. Proton VPN also has an iOS app but with minimal features.

NordVPN is a better VPN for the US. It has lightning-fast servers in over 17 locations in the US and the ability to flawlessly access Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, or Disney+. However, it has had problems unblocking Netflix US in the past. Proton VPN has some US servers, but not nearly as many as NordVPN.

    The Bottom Line

NordVPN beats Proton VPN when it comes to speed, availability of servers, affordability, and customer support. It provides more servers, faster connections, and world-class 24/7 customer service. It also does a better job bypassing geo-restrictions, easily unblocking Hulu, Disney+, and BBC iPlayer. So, NordVPN is the winner overall.
