NordVPN and ProtonVPN are two very reputable VPN providers that have a strong reputation for maintaining a strong no-logs policy and use a military-grade AES-256 encryption to secure users’ data. In terms of compatibility with mobile and desktop operating systems, NordVPN and ProtonVPN both offer dedicated apps for Windows, MacOS, Android, and iOS based devices. NordVPN’s apps are however more user-friendly and easier to setup and use.

Yet, these VPNs are very different. While NordVPN provides over 4,000 servers in 62 countries, ProtonVPN only has 1,000 servers in 54 countries. NordVPN also has a better pricing structure and certainly more promotional offers than ProtonVPN. Furthermore, NordVPN also has relatively faster connection speeds and offers more consistency in the availability of its servers. Continue reading to see which of these VPNs truly stands out as the best.

It’s not often that a VPN has cheap prices coupled with an excellent set of features. Yet, when my team and I looked at what NordVPN has to offer, this is exactly what we found. It offers a huge global network of servers, unblocks hundreds of streaming platforms, and has iron-clad security and privacy features — and you can get it all for just $3.30/month. I had to wonder what the catch was. ...

For NordVPN-Android – NordVPN cannot

There is no Caveat Emptor here, nothing like that at all. Nothing to worry about because NordVPN has ... a top-notch of KillSwitch. It has never faltered in my case. Some instances that NordVPN connection is lost for like 10 seconds while I'm "incognito" in a streaming site, I immediately check with the site with regards to my interrupted connection and my real location did not register ;-) This happened a handful of times in fact. NordVPN will not leave you out in the cold so to speak ;-) Just that since this is a review, it must be noted since features are being enumerated that Split Tunneling and KillSwitch cannot be enabled at the same time. It's either you use one or the other. KillSwitch is not possible if you need to exclude an app from using VPN which means to Split Tunneling. Crypto wallet apps and apps that refuse to use VPN tunnel are such examples. "Block Connections Without VPN" being 1 of 2 conditions that must be met to be able to utilize KillSwitch, and KillSwitch will not work if Split Tunneling is enabled. Ergo, - It's either All apps are Blocked without VPN or No Apps are Blocked at all. I thought pausing the VPN from its Notification will take care of this but in all my Android devices that have NordVPN the pausing from the notification does not work which makes me wonder if pausing/disconnecting from notification is a feature that works in Android.More

Skip it.

Skip Nord! They make you disable the kill switch to log in. Which was not always the case. So you have...  to be careful every time you log in. You do not want to have a leak just because you forgot the kill switch was off.More

As a long-time customer of ProtonMail, I was curious to see whether its world-renowned privacy and security standards would carry over into its sister product, ProtonVPN. The CERN scientists behind the world-class encrypted email technology have a lot of competition amongst premium VPNs. I wondered if these privacy pros could offer any new, innovative features that aren’t already available with...

Best VPNs by category

With over 4000 stable servers, strong focus on security, good prices and great coupon deals, NordVPN provides a more reliable VPN service. ProtonVPN has over 100 servers in 14 countries.

NordVPN offers unlimited speed and bandwidth and thousands of dedicated servers optimized for torrenting and P2P activities. ProtonVPN also supports torrenting on its servers but offers relatively fewer servers.

NordVPN provides a dedicated app for Windows that’s very user-friendly and easy to setup and supports OpenVPN. ProtonVPN also has a dedicated Windows app with strong encryption, but it’s not as user-friendly. Their customer support also does not compare to that of NordVPN’s.

If you’d like to stream content on the go from your mobile device, NordVPN’s dedicated Android app offers unrestricted speed and unlimited bandwidth and it’s pretty easy to set up. ProtonVPN also offers a very secure Android app with support for multiple protocols, but you have fewer servers to connect to.

NordVPN for MacOS provides users with enhanced security, including a “Cybersec” feature that effectively blocks malware and ads. Meanwhile, ProtonVPN offers a straightforward service for Mac without any ad blocker.

NordVPN has a very intuitive iOS app with very strong encryption, automatic kill switch, and allows up to 6 simultaneous device connections. ProtonVPN also has an iOS app but without any malware protection.

With over 1100 dedicated US servers and the ability to flawlessly access top US content from providers like Netflix and Hulu, NordVPN offers a better VPN for the USA. ProtonVPN also has some US servers for accessing Netflix, but not nearly as many as NordVPN. ProtonVPN also does not currently access Hulu as stated on their website.

When it comes to reliability, availability of servers, affordability and customer support, NordVPN by far trumps ProtonVPN as a better VPN service. It provides forty times more servers and provides a world class 24/7 customer support including a live chat channel. It also does a much better job when bypassing restrictions from services like Netflix and BBC iPlayer. If you need a reputable VPN service with an unbreakable encryption and a knack for bypassing the toughest geo-blocks, choose NordVPN.
