Trying to choose between ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and PureVPN? All three services are high-performing, but here are some factors to take into consideration if you want to find the best VPN for you.

We put all three VPNs through speed and security tests and ranked them based on their reliability and features. All three offer large server networks, good unblocking abilities, streaming and torrenting support, and a lengthy money-back guarantee.

However, it's speed that separates these VPNs. Overall, we found:

  • PureVPN is more generous with its device connections and refund period.
  • NordVPN and ExpressVPN are much faster.

PureVPN has lots of features to commend, but its slow speeds let it down. NordVPN is the fastest VPN we tested, but ExpressVPN just beat it because of its advanced features and state-of-the-art security. However, it was a very close call, and we found both NordVPN and ExpressVPN to be excellent choices.

ExpressVPN is one of the safest, fastest VPNs around, but the one drawback has always been the price. It often offers discounts that make it more affordable, but there are other decent VPNs offering similar security features for much cheaper. So, do you really need to pay so much for a VPN as good as ExpressVPN? To find the answer, I performed extensive tests on desktop and mobile devices run...

Fantastic VPN

I have just started using ExpressVPN and I must say that I was very impressed by how user-friendly it ... was and how easy it was to set up on the different devices I have at home. I also tested their customer service with chat and they were quick to respond and I got good help. I can recommend this productMore

Ok, but expensive

Seems ok, but I wouldn't say it's worth $20AUD a month. That's steep if you live in a backwater like A... ustralia, where the currency is not valuable. Easy enough to set up - you don't need to be Einstein - but unless you're a tech nerd who can take a look under the bonnet, you'll just have to trust what they say about their product. It frequently drops out without the slightest warning, often when it's the only thing online at the time - despite fast and flawless fiber internet, rendering expression entirely useless UNLESS you have it sitting on your desktop where you can keep an eagle eye on it to actually see it when it drops out so you can kick it back into service again (it doesn't do it by itself), which seems to defeat its purpose, so I'm taking away 2 stars for that. Support is good and they do get back to you as fast as they can.More

On the surface, NordVPN looks like a really impressive service. It claims to have a huge global server network, the ability to unblock tons of streaming platforms, and iron-clad security and privacy features. Plus, you can get it all for just $3.49/month. That all sounds great, but is there a catch? To find out, I did an in-depth analysis of NordVPN. I tested its speeds and how well it performs...

Best documentation was easy to understand

I came from Surfshark which never worked correctly. I had to run from the browser extension with supp... ort telling me it was my network that was causing the problem. That was rubbish. I set Nord up and had it running in a short time from the documentation. I only had to ask support about accessing more servers than just the one I saw. Great product.More

Average service, some nice features, rubbish support

Basic features work really well. Basically. I liked the feature that when Nord crashes (as it seems to...  do monthly) it will shut other apps so they aren't exposed. My subscription is based in Australia. Found downloads peak at about 1-1.5Mb/s, which is ok as long as you aren't playing online games. Don't go for the frills (though hard not to when they gamify them). I canceled my subscription because I added the Kill switch and then MFA. Nek Minnit I can't even log in. No way to remove the Kill switch without logging in. Uninstalled, reinstalled no joy. Went to the help page, and it redirected me to up my subscription as the only solution. No chatbot where I am. and I don't have an email app so couldn't email help. After a couple of hours of mucking around. Gave up and went to a competitor. Note: if I hadn't played with the security settings, I would still be with Nord. But if I can't log in, it's a dead service to me.More

PureVPN claims to be a superfast VPN for streaming with great security at a low price. It offers an extensive server network, military-grade encryption, and much more. But is it really as good as its most popular competitors? To find the answer, I performed extensive tests on its speeds, security features, and everything else it offers. This included seeing how well it works with the top strea...

An excellent value, all things considered

While they will absolutely throttle p2p in most servers, it's easy to find and log into the p2p server... s. They responded promptly when I had questions (although once it was basically to say "sorry, tough luck"). Overall though, I think I paid something like $20 for a year's subscription - I really can't complain. I'm sold on the service, although I think the fact that it's based out of HK is a bit spooky. 9/10More

Scam! Worst SUPPORT. WORST BILLING SYSTEM.

I paid for the subscription using crypto, and the money was withdrawn from my account to theirs, I wai... ted 30 minutes upon the request of their system and nothing happened, then their system told me that the session was expired and no payment was received! I reached out to their support, and they kept telling me that my issue was moved to some higher level support and they will reach out. I waited, and I waited, and while I was waiting, three of their customer support reached out to me asking about my experience with the service... and when I answer and tell them that I have no service! they just ignore it. After more than 24 hours, I reached out to their support, and they told me that I'll get an answer in 2 hours, waited for 5, and still no answer. Reached out again, and they told me that the money didn't go to their accounts! I send them a screenshot that proves otherwise again, and they told me to wait again And in the end, they told me that the money will be converted back to my account in 15 days, 18 days later, and still nothing. Reached out again, and they asked me to re-tell the situation 10 times! and still no solution. All I hear from them is, I apologize for the inconvenience, we'll solve this soon, we'll move this ticket to the next level of support, and we'll reach out to you soon... empty promises!More

Best VPN by category

ExpressVPN is best because it has slightly stronger security, the best unblocking abilities, and is the most reliable out of the three – with NordVPN coming a very close second.

ExpressVPN is better for torrenting because it allows P2P traffic on all of its 3,000+ servers in 94 countries. NordVPN only allows torrenting on its P2P-optimized servers, and PureVPN blocks torrenting on most of its servers.

NordVPN is best because its SmartPlay DNS feature guarantees powerful unblocking and superfast streaming even on older versions of Windows. It's compatible with Windows 7 and above.

NordVPN is better because its Android app has the same features as its desktop client. You can use obfuscated servers and double VPN to add an extra layer of privacy and anonymity to your connection.

NordVPN is best because its macOS apps are incredibly lightweight, intuitive, and easy-to-use. It’s compatible with all Apple devices, and it protects them all with its CyberSec security software.

NordVPN is better because its iOS apps offer Onion over VPN compatibility and P2P traffic. The iOS app also features IPv6 leak protection, which ExpressVPN’s iOS app doesn’t have.

ExpressVPN is best because it has the largest US server network, and it gives you access to the most US-based streaming services. It unblocked every single US-based streaming provider we tested it on, including Netflix, Hulu, and HBO.

The Bottom Line

NordVPN has the best and most user-friendly apps, but ExpressVPN is our overall winner for its superior security and bonus features like split tunneling and TrustedServer tech.
