NordVPN vs TorGuard 2022

After comparing these VPNs, we have a winner!

Which VPN is better?

It’s a neck-and-neck race between champions: NordVPN and TorGuard, two of our top-rated VPN providers, are set to battle it out with only one winner in the end. Both VPNs employ solid encryption and advanced security features, including stealth modes, multi-protocol support, kill switches, and DNS leak protection. They are both torrent-friendly and compatible with all major operating systems and devices. In addition, both VPNs can overcome challenging geoblocks and firewalls, even in notorious China. Digging deeper, however, we find minor differences between the two providers that have major impact on the user experience. TorGuard has 3,000+ servers in 50+ countries, whereas NordVPN boasts a much larger network of 5,000+ servers in more than 60 countries. TorGuard also has some inconsistency in its connection speeds due to a centralized focus on security. NordVPN, on the other hand, perfectly balances tip-top security and fast speeds, thanks to optimized servers for torrenting and HD streaming. Although TorGuard keeps no use logs, its location in the surveillance-heavy USA raises significant privacy concerns. Based in privacy-friendly Panama, NordVPN offers a verified no-logs policy and complete anonymity protection. And while TorGuard offers cheaper plans, you’ll be charged additional fees for extra services like access to US Netflix and support for five simultaneous connections. NordVPN yields better value for your money by offering full-featured packages with six simultaneous connections per account.

It’s not often that a VPN has cheap prices coupled with an excellent set of features. Yet, when my team and I looked at what NordVPN has to offer, this is exactly what we found. It offers a huge global network of servers, unblocks hundreds of streaming platforms, and has iron-clad security and privacy features — and you can get it all for just $3.71/month. I had to wonder what the catch was. ...

Best documentation was easy to understand

I came from Surfshark which never worked correctly. I had to run from the browser extension with supp... ort telling me it was my network that was causing the problem. That was rubbish. I set Nord up and had it running in a short time from the documentation. I only had to ask support about accessing more servers than just the one I saw. Great product.More

Average service, some nice features, rubbish support

Basic features work really well. Basically. I liked the feature that when Nord crashes (as it seems to...  do monthly) it will shut other apps so they aren't exposed. My subscription is based in Australia. Found downloads peak at about 1-1.5Mb/s, which is ok as long as you aren't playing online games. Don't go for the frills (though hard not to when they gamify them). I canceled my subscription because I added the Kill switch and then MFA. Nek Minnit I can't even log in. No way to remove the Kill switch without logging in. Uninstalled, reinstalled no joy. Went to the help page, and it redirected me to up my subscription as the only solution. No chatbot where I am. and I don't have an email app so couldn't email help. After a couple of hours of mucking around. Gave up and went to a competitor. Note: if I hadn't played with the security settings, I would still be with Nord. But if I can't log in, it's a dead service to me.More

Have been with them for several years, love their service

November 2021 PING ms 16 DOWNLOAD Mbps 254.92 UPLOAD Mbps 10.79 (running atop Comcast cable broad... band Docsis 3.0) I had previously been using on per device using the available tg vpn clients (in my case Linux & android). They recently upgraded all their vpn servers to wireguard based service. I had to manually reconfigure the client at that point as the switchover from OpenVPN to wireguard protocols broke my connection, though after that all was well again. I have since acquired a Netgate 1100 pfSense+ Security Gateway, and configured failover torguard VPNs to the 3 closest torguard sites as wireguard VPNs on the security gateway (Torguard has a tools page in the member's area that will generate configuration details to use for router/gateway vpn configuration). Running everything through the security gateway, you can specify which devices you want over the vpn or not, and set a killswitch firewall rule to cut off your connection if the vpn goes down if that is important for your use case. I've been using torguard primarily for BitTorrent the whole time (even prior to the user via the security gateway) without any issues and always with great download speeds. Not sure about those complaining about speed, but as you can see the above stats which I just ran off speedtest.net when writing this post, these are decent speeds and not much overhead (I think the best ever d/l I've gotten on the raw Comcast non-vpn is about ~275-280 MPs), using their nearest point of presence which is approx 90 miles from my origin IP. Wireguard gives much better performance than OpenVPN-based vpn protocols. They sometimes offer special (permanent) discount pricing, which I took advantage of so they have turned out to be a very reasonably cheap service for me, renewing at the discount price yearly. Their customer support has always been responsive whenever I've had questions. LaurenMore

Does not work with firestick

Their VPN does not work with 1st gen firesticks. They did not post this on their site. I paid $60 for ... a 1-year membership. After 7 days got a notice from Spectrum 18 complaints "Notice of Copyright Infringement" emails from the spectrum. Contact billing for refund, they gave me the runaround and kept asking the same questions over and over again. Then told me a refund is not available after 7 days. However, it takes spectrum over 7 days to send a complaint and they never said it didn't work with 1st gen firestick. Also, the app connected to vpn through the firestick and never said it had an issue. So this company is scamming, do not use it if you want to get a "Notice of Copyright Infringement" letter from Spectrum and no refund.More

Best VPNs by category

Even though NordVPN and TorGuard both offer impressive services, NordVPN goes further to protect your online privacy, with the industry’s most advanced security features included standard with all subscriptions. NordVPN also delivers more stable and faster connection speeds, suitable for all kinds of online activities.

True to its name, TorGuard welcomes torrenting on all its servers and is compatible with most torrent apps. However, its download speeds fall in the average range for premium VPNs, and below average in some locations. Even though NordVPN supports torrenting on specific servers only, its bigger network of over 5,000 servers includes many P2P-optimized units that deliver higher connection speeds.

Both NordVPN and TorGuard have dedicated apps for Windows, with attractive features such as a kill switch, leak protection, and support for multiple security protocols. Both apps have a clean interface, but NordVPN offers a sleeker and a more user-friendly client, with a bigger list of servers to choose from.

NordVPN and TorGuard provide native clients for Android with similar features, including support for multiple protocols and public wi-fi protection. Unfortunately, both apps lack a kill switch. However, NordVPN for Android includes the provider’s unique CyberSec suite. By protecting you from malware and annoying ads, the feature make your mobile browsing smoother and safer.

Both providers offer dedicated MacOS apps with a kill switch and leak protection. TorGuard’s Mac software client supports multiple protocols and gives you full control over which level of security you use. There’s a downside, however: the stronger the encryption, the slower your connection will be. NordVPN’s app for Mac better balances security and speed. The app comes in two separate versions, with each featuring one of the two most secure protocols (OpenVPN and IKEv2).

While both NordVPN and TorGuard offer elegant apps for iOS devices, NordVPN leads in this category for several reasons. Unlike TorGuard, which uses only the IPSec protocol, NordVPN for iOS supports both IPSec and the much more secure IKEv2. In addition, NordVPN’s app has a built-in kill switch, which can’t be found in TorGuard’s iOS client.

TorGuard has a relatively large network of US servers. However, in order to access restricted US streaming sites like Netflix with TorGuard, you will need to acquire a dedicated US IP at an extra cost. Even then, sufficient speed for smooth streaming is not guaranteed. Meanwhile, NordVPN boasts one of the largest US server networks in the industry – over 1,900 units and counting. The built-in SmartPlay feature makes connecting to servers optimized for streaming US content one-click simple, and there are no hidden extra fees.

The Bottom Line

TorGuard is a solid service with many impressive features, but with its reliability and range of capabilities, NordVPN powers ahead to win this race convincingly. If you want to stream your favorite content from anywhere at high speeds without restrictions, interruptions, or the hassles of extra fees, NordVPN is the clear choice. What impresses us most about NordVPN is that you get such great streaming while experiencing a more secure and privacy-friendly service than almost any other VPN can provide. Nevertheless, if you don’t mind a US-based provider with some speed lags and streaming limitations, you will be pleased with TorGuard’s overall performance for its price.
