With a quick look, we can see that both Surfshark and VyprVPN have many strengths. Surfshark’s smaller user base and optimized network allow for great speeds across the 50 countries where it has servers. Privacy is also covered well, as this VPN is located in the British Virgin Islands (no data retention laws) and works under a tight no-logging policy. Swiss-based VyprVPN also made the switch to zero logs recently, making it a great pick for staying hidden online. It’s also worth mentioning that any logs the provider might have kept in the past are guarded by tough Swiss privacy protection laws. Both VPNs come with robust 256-bit encryption, OpenVPN support, and 24/7 live chat customer service. VyprVPN has the bigger network (700+ servers in over 60 countries), but Surfshark isn’t far behind (500+ servers in 50 countries). Both services work with popular geoblocked streaming platforms like Netflix and the BBC iPlayer. VyprVPN is also a favorite for bypassing the Great Firewall of China, thanks to its Chameleon protocol. Unfortunately, to use that protocol, you’ll have to get the Premium plan. Surfshark currently works in China without any need to purchase optional extras. Scroll down to see how Surfshark and VyprVPN fared in our detailed tests.

With VPNs, you tend to get what you pay for. So when I saw Surfshark’s super low prices (you can get it for just $2.21/month), I was a bit skeptical about its rave reviews. To find out if it actually lives up to these claims, I tested every single aspect of Surfshark, including speeds, security features, unblocking abilities, network reliability, and device compatibility. I also took a cl...

Easy to use and very safe

Surfshark is very customer-friendly and easy to use. You are safe and well protected from governments ... trying to spy on you. You get frequent updates and important information from Surfshark. There are only very few things Surfshark can improve its services.More

No use for Netflix, so-so speeds - you get what you pay for

They have a reasonable variety of servers, but the main reason for which I purchased a subscription wa... s to get access to local Netflix libraries, especially the ones in the UK, France, and Germany. When I purchased a subscription, their website had a list of servers through which one could access local Netflix libraries, including the above. Well, guess what: none of the above works now, even though some reviews claim that you can access many different Netflix libraries with Surfshark. And the BBC iPlayer or the ITV hub also don't work consistently. Bottom line: I have to get another VPN service, and cannot use Surfshark for the purpose for which I purchased it. I have about two years left of my subscription, and they refuse to make a partial refund. That's not cool at all.More

VyprVPN is a popular VPN service created by Switzerland-based Golden Frog. This VPN has worked hard to establish itself as a trusted provider and advocate of internet privacy. The provider has also been taking steps to improve its reliability, security, and quality of service based on customer requests. However, does VyprVPN really make the cut? Here's a preview: when it comes to privacy, geobl...

Chameleon is Amazing

I tried CyberGhost, Express, and Nord VPN over the last month. None of these were able to get by my in... stitution's Fortigate Firewall doing Deep Packet Inspection scanning. They are using some sort of Obfuscation technique but they were not good enough. I read about VyprVpn's Chameleon protocol. YES... It worked !!!! I do have to sacrifice speed but at least I get outside access. When I am out of that environment, I switch back to Wireguard and the speed increases 300%. The price is great, their Live chat was great when I questioned their own DNS servers. They were easy to reach with the chat and took the time to explain how their DNS servers worked. I highly recommend VyprVPN !!!More

Very Disappointed

Vypr is a disgrace to privacy and censorship. Here is a chat from today : “We apologize for the con... tinued trouble you experienced with your VyprVPN account, I will be happy to help you with it. In order to further review the issue, I like you to follow the below steps and restore your purchase from iTunes: . Delete the VyprVPN app from your device . Tap Settings in your device . Navigate to iTunes & App Store . Tap User and log out . Login with the same Apple ID that originally purchased VyprVPN subscription . Download the VyprVPN app again, tap the Options menu, and choose to Restore purchases . Confirm your password if necessary . Verify the app is working Please note that if your Apple account doesn't show an active VyprVPN subscription, you'll not be able to restore the subscription using the VyprVPN app.” My Apple account DOES show a paid subscription: The directions provided are outdated and are regarding an older version of iOS, nothing current was offered to get the app to work. I am a person that has had hacking issues due to Targeting, this company can be paid off. DO NOT TRUST VYPER! Very unprofessional!More

Best VPNs by category

Surfshark gives you the protection and content access you need right out of the box, and at a great price. With strong security, fast speeds, and no logs, it’s a great VPN for daily, no-hassle protection. VyprVPN is the more expensive service if you want the Chameleon protocol (and you likely will), and the customer support team needs to improve response times.

Surfshark comes with full P2P support on its Netherlands servers, making it a great pick for torrenting. That said, we’d like to see more P2P server variety from this VPN in the future. Meanwhile, VyprVPN has a reputation for complying with Digital Millennium Copyright Act claims and shutting down accounts used for torrenting. So while VyprVPN claims to allow P2P file sharing, we usually recommend avoiding using it for torrenting to be safe.

Both VPNs have a lot to offer on Windows. You’ll find intuitive clients, private DNS settings, split tunneling, and a kill switch in either app. VyprVPN’s Chameleon protocol is a must for hassle-free unblocking and streaming, but it comes at a fairly high price. Surfshark is the cheaper option for a dependable VPN for Windows users.

If you don’t mind paying more for VyprVPN Premium, you can have the excellent Chameleon protocol on your Android device. Even if you go for the cheaper plan, you’ll still get native OpenVPN support in the app. Surfshark also has a sleek Android client, but it currently offers just the IKEv2 protocol. That means less customization is possible, but you do get great security and speed.

Surfshark offers a Mac app very similar to its impressive Windows client. If you’ve set aside a larger budget for your VPN, you might want to consider VyprVPN’s Premium plan. However, aside from the Chameleon protocol, you won’t be gaining much over the cheaper Surfshark.

While both VPNs have polished iOS apps with IKEv2/IPsec encryption and DNS leak protection, Surfshark will win over Apple fans with its unlimited simultaneous connections. VyprVPN only supports three devices at once, although this number is increased to five if you go with the Premium plan. The biggest drawback of VyprVPN for iOS is that the Chameleon protocol isn’t available, so you’ll be losing a big portion of the Premium plan’s added value.

Surfshark has a US network covering nine different locations, one more than VyprVPN. However, both VPNs are great picks for accessing US Netflix, Hulu, and regional sports events. However, VyprVPN's servers aren’t as new as Surfshark’s, and some of them have been blacklisted by Netflix.

The Bottom Line

In the end, newcomer Surfshark impressed us in every category. Meanwhile, VyprVPN’s Premium plan offers exceptional performance, but its price can be an issue for many users. VyprVPN was built around the provider’s unique Chameleon protocol, yet this amazing feature isn’t included in the basic plan. This flaw means that Surfshark gives most users better value for their money. And let’s not forget the not-so-obvious benefits of a new VPN service: emptier servers are always desirable, as long as they are fast and stable. Having access to eagerly responsive customer support is always better than having to wait for an answer. Having a powerful and affordable VPN for every device in your household is also a huge plus. VyprVPN remains a great all-around service, especially for China, but Surfshark brings a lot to the table and asks for very little in return.
