With a quick look, we can see that both Surfshark and VyprVPN have many strengths. Surfshark’s smaller user base and optimized network allow for great speeds across the 50 countries where it has servers. Privacy is also covered well, as this VPN is located in the British Virgin Islands (no data retention laws) and works under a tight no-logging policy. Swiss-based VyprVPN also made the switch to zero logs recently, making it a great pick for staying hidden online. It’s also worth mentioning that any logs the provider might have kept in the past are guarded by tough Swiss privacy protection laws. Both VPNs come with robust 256-bit encryption, OpenVPN support, and 24/7 live chat customer service. VyprVPN has the bigger network (700+ servers in over 60 countries), but Surfshark isn’t far behind (500+ servers in 50 countries). Both services work with popular geoblocked streaming platforms like Netflix and the BBC iPlayer. VyprVPN is also a favorite for bypassing the Great Firewall of China, thanks to its Chameleon protocol. Unfortunately, to use that protocol, you’ll have to get the Premium plan. Surfshark currently works in China without any need to purchase optional extras. Scroll down to see how Surfshark and VyprVPN fared in our detailed tests.

 The Bottom Line

In the end, newcomer Surfshark impressed us in every category. Meanwhile, VyprVPN’s Premium plan offers exceptional performance, but its price can be an issue for many users. VyprVPN was built around the provider’s unique Chameleon protocol, yet this amazing feature isn’t included in the basic plan. This flaw means that Surfshark gives most users better value for their money. And let’s not forget the not-so-obvious benefits of a new VPN service: emptier servers are always desirable, as long as they are fast and stable. Having access to eagerly responsive customer support is always better than having to wait for an answer. Having a powerful and affordable VPN for every device in your household is also a huge plus. VyprVPN remains a great all-around service, especially for China, but Surfshark brings a lot to the table and asks for very little in return.

Interestingly, if you compare Surfshark with ExpressVPN, which is our top ranked vpn, you'll see that Surfshark can learn a lot from ExpressVPN. Compare Surfshark with ExpressVPN
