Top 3 REALLY FREE VPNs for Netflix | Updated February 2020

Can’t get your fix of zombie action because The Walking Dead isn’t shown in your region? Traveling and missing all the drama from The Crown?

Netflix has some of the toughest geoblocks in the world and finding a reliable, free VPN that lets you unblock Netflix’s global content is tough. But I can help.

I’ve spent hours testing free VPNs to ensure you don’t waste your time trying to watch Netflix with a VPN that’s so slow all you get is eternal buffering.

I usually recommend using a low-cost premium service like NordVPN, with its fast, consistent speeds for streaming.

While most free VPN services can’t bypass Netflix’s geoblocks, the free VPNs on my list can.

The Best Free VPNs for Netflix (updated 2020)

There really aren’t many free VPNs that work with Netflix. Of the 15 I tested, I found only 3 options that worked. Even these services come with their own limitations.

1. NordVPN

NordVPN’s Key Features

  • Try it risk-free with a 30-day money-back guarantee
  • 5,500+ servers in 59 countries
  • The fastest streaming speeds
  • SmartPlay DNS reliably unblocks Netflix
  • Works with: Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, HBO GO, Hulu, Disney+, YouTube TV, Showtime, Sling TV
  • Compatible with: Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Linux, Firefox, Chrome, Amazon Fire TV, routers, Android TV

NordVPN isn’t strictly free, but it is the best VPN for streaming. It’s unlimited, easy to use, and super-fast. And you can try it risk-free for a month with its 30-day money-back guarantee.

During the first 30 days, your access to NordVPN is totally unlimited. This means no restrictions on speed, data, or usage. You can stream Netflix as much as you like.

You get full access to all of NordVPN’s global servers. The impressive network, combined with SmartPlay DNS, allows you to unblock Netflix in every region.

Not only can NordVPN unblock Netflix, but it also unblocks every other major streaming site I tested, including Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, and HBO GO.

Lightning-fast speeds guarantee smooth streaming. A handy Quick Connect feature connects you to the fastest server for your chosen location.

Obfuscated servers hide your VPN usage from your internet service provider (ISP). As well as blocking your ISP from monitoring your online behavior, this also prevents your ISP from throttling your bandwidth when you stream. It also means that you can use NordVPN in regions that normally block or censor VPN use.

You can connect up to six devices simultaneously under one NordVPN profile, so the whole family can stream their favorite global content simultaneously.

Its CyberSec technology blocks trackers, malware, and ads. AES 256-bit encryption hides all your private data behind a military-grade wall of protection.

A kill switch and DNS leak protection ensure your IP address and online activity stay hidden, even during a dropped connection.

There’s also a strict no-logs policy that guarantees the servers never store your data.

2. Opera VPN

Opera VPN’s Key Features

  • Unlimited free data and bandwidth for Netflix streaming
  • No speed restrictions
  • Military-grade encryption
  • Works with: Netflix UK, Netflix Sweden, Netflix Singapore
  • Compatible with: Windows, macOS, Android, Linux

Opera is a completely free, in-browser VPN. It’s one of the only free services that’s completely unrestricted. You get unlimited data and bandwidth, so there’s no limit on how much Netflix you can watch.

You don’t have to sign up, register, or enter payment details to access the Opera VPN. This means that it can’t record any of your personal details.

Opera’s VPN is also one of the only free services compatible with Netflix. But beware. It’s not as straightforward as unblocking Netflix with a premium VPN.

This VPN only gives you access to servers in three general locations: Europe, the Americas, and Asia. While you can switch between these locations as many times as you want, you can’t choose a more specific server or country.

During my test, I was able to connect to Netflix UK, Sweden, and Singapore by switching server locations. I couldn’t access Netflix US.

Speeds are mostly fast and reliable. Your connection will slow down if you connect to the farthest area from your real location.

Opera VPN’s security features are respectable for a free service. It uses military-grade encryption and has a no-logs policy, so you know your data is safe and private.

There’s also a tracking and ad blocker extension that you can install separately, which means no annoying popups interrupting your favorite Netflix shows.

However, you can only use the VPN within the Opera browser. This means that the VPN won’t protect your connection outside of your browser. It doesn’t cover any other applications, like torrent clients. If you just want to stream Netflix though, this shouldn’t be an issue.

Opera works well if you live in – or are traveling to – a country where Netflix is not available, and you don’t mind which region you access.

3. PrivateVPN

PrivateVPN’s Key Features

  • Premium VPN with one week of unlimited usage via a free trial
  • 150+ server locations in 60 countries
  • Streaming-optimized servers for Netflix
  • Fast streaming speeds
  • AES 256-bit encryption
  • Works with: Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, ABC, HBO GO, Showtime, YouTube
  • Compatible with: Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, Kodi, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, routers

PrivateVPN is another premium VPN that you can use for free with its 7-day free trial. This makes it a great choice for a Netflix movie marathon or an extended boxset binging session!

You have to register for the free trial, but you don’t have to enter payment details or make an initial payment. Therefore, you’re safe from unexpected renewals.

PrivateVPN’s free trial is totally unlimited and unrestricted. You get all the same features as a premium customer. This includes access to 150+ servers in 60 countries.

It even has streaming-optimized servers. Each optimized server has a label detailing which streaming services it unblocks. If you want to watch Netflix, simply choose the server labeled “Netflix” to connect to the appropriate IP address.

During my tests, PrivateVPN was able to unblock Netflix quickly and reliably. You can also use it to access BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and most of the other major streaming services.

PrivateVPN’s speeds are fast enough for smooth streaming with no buffering, lag, or slow load times.

PrivateVPN allows you to connect up to six devices simultaneously, so you have access to your favorite Netflix shows from all your gadgets.

It’s also one of the most secure VPNs I’ve tested. It uses AES 256-bit encryption, a kill switch, and DNS/IPv6 leak protection. These advanced features keep your online activity and identifying data hidden from trackers and cybersnoops.

How We Tested and Ranked These VPNs

Any free VPN for Netflix needs to be safe, fast, and – of course – able to bypass Netflix’s geoblocks, so you can watch as much of The Politician or Big Mouth as you like.

First, I looked at the size and spread of each VPN’s server network. Only VPNs with large global networks are usually capable of bypassing Netflix’s geoblocks, as the VPNs are able to continuously update and add new servers. I’ve noted server numbers and locations in all of my reviews.

I also tested several servers in different locations for each VPN, to make sure they give you access to as many Netflix libraries as possible.

I tested each VPN for speed using speedtest.net. By recording my speeds before and after connecting to the VPN, I was able to determine how much – or how little – each of my recommendations affect your connection.

The faster the connection, the less likely you have to put up with buffering or lag while streaming Netflix.

Last but not least, I tested each free VPN on security and privacy.

I put DNS and IPv6 leak protection claims to the test with ipleak.net. I also noted encryption levels and any bonus features like kill switches or malware protection.

Lots of free VPNs claim to give you complete anonymity, but it’s always worth checking the small print to be safe. I looked at the privacy and logging policies of each free VPN to tell you exactly what types of information and data they store – if any.

The Top-Ranked Premium VPNs We Recommend for Netflix

Free VPNs really struggle to unblock Netflix. Your options are very limited if you’re looking for a truly free VPN that works with Netflix and can handle streaming.

You’re much better off using a low-cost premium VPN that guarantees compatibility, speed, and security.

If you’d rather save yourself the stress and opt for an affordable premium VPN, here are my top 5 recommendations for streaming. They’re all capable of unblocking Netflix and guarantee a fast and reliable connection with world-class security.

FAQs

What’s the catch with free VPNs?

Compatibility is the biggest issue with free Netflix VPNs. Netflix employs very strong VPN detection software. Free VPNs can’t always bypass this software. Only the free recommendations on my list work with Netflix.

Free VPNs rarely offer the same level of encryption and security as premium services. While the free VPNs on my list are safe to use, other free services have been known to log and sell your data to third parties.

Will my VPN work with other streaming sites?

Netflix employs some of the most powerful anti-VPN and anti-proxy software available. If the VPN you choose is capable of unblocking Netflix, it’s most likely capable of unblocking other major streaming sites, too. We provide comprehensive details of each VPN’s unblocking abilities in our full reviews.

Will my VPN work on all my streaming devices?

All of my recommended free and premiums VPNs for Netflix are compatible with a wide range of platforms and devices. I have included a compatibility guide with each recommendation.

Does a VPN impact streaming speed?

VPNs route your internet traffic via an additional server, which can slow you down. However, all of the premium VPNs I recommend are so quick that you won’t notice any delay. You are more likely to notice a speed decrease with a free VPN, due to speed and bandwidth restrictions or server limitations.

Bottom Line

In the search for a free VPN that works with Netflix, there are some options. However, there’s no perfect solution.

If you want a free VPN for Netflix, you have to opt for temporary use or tolerate unreliable connections.

The good news is that you don’t have to put up with unreliable unblocking, slow speeds, and substandard security. Premium services like NordVPN reliably unblock Netflix and keep you safe at the same time – all for a very low price.

If you only need to access Netflix for a short time, you can use these premium VPNs for free with a trial or money-back guarantee.
