If you’re in Qatar, and you want to use Skype, WhatsApp or FaceTime then you know that as of now, VoIP services are no longer working in the country. Whether you’re a Qatari resident or you’re planning a trip there and you need to be able to make calls over the internet, there is an easy solution. The right VPN can help you unblock Skype, WhatsApp and FaceTime and enable you to talk as much as you like.

Why You Need a VPN to Use VoIP Services in Qatar

There is much speculation as to why VoIP calls have suddenly stopped working in Qatar. Ooredoo, the country’s main telecom provider, has stated that the problem is not with its services.

While some VoIP users in Qatar speculated that bandwidth issues were the reason for the problem, this appears unlikely to be the true cause. Most VoIP providers compress audio in order to reduce users’ data usage, and to improve clarity over slow networks, so bandwidth should not be an issue.

Later, the Qatari government, in a somewhat vague statement, noted that “there are no laws or rules that prohibit the use of [VoIP] technology within the State of Qatar”. However, Qatari law does “make it illegal for any person to provide telecommunications services to the public for a direct or indirect fee without a license issued by ictQATAR for that purpose.”

The only two entities licensed to provide VoIP services in Qatar, the statement said, are Qatar Telecom (QTel) and Vodafone Qatar.

While this theory cannot be confirmed, rumors have been floating around that the situation is the result of QTel’s strategy to monopolize the lucrative long-distance phone call market.

If people in Qatar can no longer use services like Skype, Whatsapp and Facetime, they will be forced to make expensive international phone calls. That is, unless they use a VPN to bypass the issue altogether.

A VPN allows you to encrypt your internet activity and conceal your true physical location. When you use a VPN, your internet service provider has no idea which services you’re using, so it’s impossible for them to block you.

A number of Qataris have been reporting using VPNs successfully to access popular VoIP services within the country.

Is it Legal to Use a VPN or a VoIP Service in Qatar?

Using a VPN in Qatar is 100% legal, as long as you don’t use one to break the country’s laws. It’s also completely legal to use a VoIP service to make calls – as the Qatari government has confirmed, “any person or business within the State of Qatar may use VoIP services for voice calls for their own use.”

It’s just illegal for companies to offer VoIP services without a license. So, if you use a VPN to access Skype, FaceTime, or WhatsApp in Qatar, you’re in the clear.
