(Ex-Google, International tech speaker)
HideMy.name is a highly configurable VPN with a user-friendly interface. It offers exceptional security for surfing, torrenting, and communicating over the internet. However, it does not live up to all its promises, particularly in relation to streaming and geo-restrictions.
The company collects minimal personal information on signup and keeps a non-persistent log of connection data for troubleshooting. Any data collected is cleared from its servers every few hours.
HideMy.name secures connections with RSA 2048-bit and AES 256-bit encryption and offers OpenVPN, PPTP, and L2TP protocols. It utilizes Chameleon technology to help hide your connection and, while it is not an automatic feature, you can set up a kill switch to ensure there’s no data leakage if your connection drops.
HideMy.name’s server network is limited. It currently has 89 servers in 86 locations across 40 countries. While speeds vary, each server we tried provided a stable connection with speeds that allowed us to surf and stream without interruptions or buffering – provided we could actually access our chosen streaming service.
HideMy.name does support torrenting. However, the ports required for torrenting are blocked on servers in countries where torrenting is illegal. The provider also requests that you take other users into consideration when using servers for these activities, and don’t leave file sharing to run continuously.
HideMy.name states that it is able to bypass geoblocks and access streaming sites across the globe. However, our tests showed that the services it can reach are extremely limited. We were unable to access the BBC iPlayer or ivi-ru (a Russian streaming service), both of which are listed as accessible on its website.
We were also unable to access any regional version of Netflix, despite changing tunneling protocols and using the Chameleon option. We did try the troubleshooting suggestions provided to us by HideMy.name support, but were still unable to reach these and other streaming services.
Overall, HideMy.name provides anonymous and secure access to the internet. It allows you to torrent with confidence and provides excellent general support on its website. Its ability to bypass geoblocks is inconsistent, however, as is the knowledge base of its customer support staff.
Nevertheless, if you are just looking for a securely encrypted service that will keep you safe while you surf the web, use Skype, or enjoy YouTube, then HideMy.name should be on your short list of very affordable providers.

HideMy.name is easy to install using the Download button on the website, which gives you access to the free trial. To upgrade to the paid service, click Log Out and then click on the Buy VPN button.
Once you’ve installed the software, choose the server you want to connect to and click Connect; you are ready to surf anonymously and securely. To change your settings, set up a different protocol, enable a proxy, or test the speed of your connection, click on the Settings tab.
If you want the additional security of a kill switch, you will need to set it up manually. Support can be reached through live chat or email to guide you through the process.
HideMy.name VPN offers multiple subscription lengths: 1 month, 6 months (semiannual), 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, or 5 years. If you choose to pay yearly, you save around 65% compared to paying monthly; a 5-year commitment brings the savings up to 75%.
The cost of the VPN is comparable to other VPNs that offer a similar level of service, functionality, and connectivity. It offers value for your money if you are looking for a secure VPN for general surfing activities, torrenting, and private communication.
HideMy.name offers a 1-day free trial that gives you unlimited access to all its services and features. However, you will not have access to all the network’s high-speed servers during the trial; these are only available through the paid service.
HideMy.name does, however, offer a 7-day money-back guarantee so you can try the service at no financial risk. Just be aware that money will only be refunded if you have transferred less than 500MB of data while using the service.
Canceling the service can be achieved through the support tab on the website.
HideMy.name provides a reliable service. During testing, we were able to connect to our chosen servers with no difficulty and experienced no dropped connections. Each time, we were assigned an IP address that matched the chosen server location.
We accessed numerous different sites, including VoIP providers, with no difficulties. However, accessing streaming sites was not as simple as the provider suggests. While we were able to access YouTube, HideMy.name could not bypass the geoblocks on Netflix (any country), regardless of the connection protocols we used.
We experienced similar issues with the BBC iPlayer and ivi-ru (a Russian streaming website), both of which HideMy.name lists as accessible with its service.
Support on the HideMy.name website consists of a detailed and well-organized FAQ page. All aspects of using the VPN are covered, including troubleshooting and technical support for torrenting.
Customer service can be reached through an online contact form or live chat. The live chat service is not 24/7; the tab includes a notification regarding whether agents are online.
When chat is not active, messages are responded to via email once someone is available to deal with the query. We received a response within two hours. However, the response was not particularly detailed or helpful.
We also used the online contact form to ask further questions, again receiving a response within two hours. In this case, the response provided the information we needed, with detailed suggestions on how to solve the problem we had encountered.
Unfortunately, contacting customer service to cancel your subscription is not as straightforward as it first seems. We gave our reason (lack of streaming on our chosen sites) and requested our refund. The first reply we received included links to the refund policy and steps to try and resolve our streaming connection issues (which didn’t work).
We replied stating that we wanted to continue with our cancellation and were met with further questions about the steps we had taken to resolve our issues.
Overall, the company seems very reluctant to cancel a subscription. While the information the support agent offered was an attempt to help, it would have been more helpful if those suggestions had been given when we first inquired about our inability to stream content.
