Ok platform but WAY too many disconnects

Easy to set up and it's easy to understand how IPVanish connects and hides your IP address. But I am leaving IPVanish because of the constant server disconnects (in Australia) - strong WiFi, good location but sometimes 8+ disconnects per day during torrents or downloads, unreliable. You can't use a VPN when you're doubtful your computer will log reliable download time overnight. I keep wondering how long the VPN disconnected for to just leave my computer idling overnight when it SHOULD be downloading. When it works, it works just fine - but a VPN shouldn't leave you guessing or wondering when the next disconnect will be - especially when there are cheaper, more highly-rated services out there. I'll be giving one of them a try when IPVanish expires.

    Disconnects way too often

I 100% agree with this review. The client cannot be relied upon in any fashion to stay connected for decent period of time. There are way too many disconnects happening, which need manual intervention to fix them. I'll be hitting up ExpressVPN next.

      Not for Torrenting

I have been hit 3 times now from my service provider for illegal downloads. I have kill switch and all recommended leak proofing settings applied but it seems that when IPVanish does it's random disconnect my originating IP is discoverable. It also seems to have an issue with keeping a steady connection when torrenting. I can surf, and watch videos without a drop but torrenting sucks. My biggest problem is that if my originating IP can be seen when torrenting, then how do I know it isn't leaking when banking or doing anything else that should be VPN protected. I have run this program on windows, mac, linux and android and have had the same random disconnects and leak issue. Sorry to say, I will be changing VPN's. This is not to discourage anyone from using this product, just more of a user beware, especially if you torrent.

While it seems straightforward, some have had trouble when it comes to connecting and setting up their configurations the first time. Others have had no trouble at all. Once everything is up and running, though, there doesn’t seem to be any issue with getting online with the VPN.

        IPVanish Installation:

        1. You can easily download the latest version of IPVanish by clicking the VPN Software button at the top of the website page.
        2. Select your operating system, before scrolling down and clicking ‘Download Software’.
        3. When it has finished downloading, launch the install file. If the file security warning appears, click ‘Run’.
        4. Click ‘Install’, if asked if IPVanish can make changes to your computer, click ‘Yes’.
        5. When the program has been successfully installed, click ‘Launch’ to open.
        6. Enter your IPVanish username and password to open the ‘Dashboard’.
        7. Use the drop-down boxes at the top of the ‘Dashboard’ to select your desired protocol and server.
        8. Click the ‘Connect’ button in the top right of the ‘Dashboard’.
        9. When connected the symbol will turn green. Click it again to disconnect.
        10. You can also connect to a specific server by selecting ‘Server Selection’ at the left side of the screen. Reliability & Support 4.9 / 5.0

Overall, most user have found that the reliability is decent. Since they have a money-back guarantee though, it might be something you want to check out for yourself in the first few days of using the service.

You may also be wondering about the support system for IPVanish. Like many of the other services on the market, they offer an array of options for getting help. They do have a number of different methods for getting assistance. One of the first you may want to use is the support center. You can browse by topic and then find answers to many of the common questions that other customers have had in the past.

In addition, they also offer 24/7/365 support with live chat, email, and by posting a public question. They stress that the support requests that come to them are handled on a first-come, first-serve basis. This means it might be a little while before you get help. However, with their new live chat support, it should be almost instant.

(Ex-Hacker, left the dark side and teaches young padawans to use the force)
IPVanish is a barebones provider who offers competitive pricing and more than 400 servers in 60 countries

IPVanish is a very strong service and one of the market leaders. They offer high security and reliability and, of importance to some, they allow you to pay using Bitcoin, as well as have a zero-logging policy. They are a relatively inexpensive option and make it very easy to get started. They offer 24/7 customer support and allow up to ten simultaneous devices at once. IPVanish is a tier-1 service who own their own physical points of presence and servers, making for a more secure service. They also recently added a kill switch, only adding to their arsenal.  IPVanish has a large number of servers in 61 countries to choose from as well as all of the protocols that you could hope to have access to. Finally, they place no restrictions on peer-to-peer traffic (Torrents) and even feature a SOCKS5 proxy for this purpose.

Detailed expert review of IPVanish VPN
        Alex (Shurf) Frenkel
(Ex-Hacker, left the dark side and teaches young padawans to use the force)

IPVanish is an extremely popular VPN, and for good reason. Established in 2014, IPVanish offers exactly what you need in a VPN; a big list of servers, great security protocols, decent speeds, and simple functionality. However, recent reports show that IPVanish monitored and kept user activity logs, even though their privacy policy states they do not. We want to make sure you get the best VPN for your needs, so we break down the pros and cons of IPVanish, and if they do indeed keep logs.

IPVanish has what you want in a VPN

Let’s start at the beginning. With a VPN, you usually want lots of servers, good security, and access to blocked websites. IPVanish has this.

Their list of more than 1,000 servers in 60 countries is one of the biggest on the market and shows that IPVanish continues to grow and expand its network (although not as fast as NordVPN, which jumped to over 4,000 servers within less than a year).

IPVanish also claims to be a tier-1 provider, meaning they own their own servers around the world, which translates to a more secure network for their customers. This is quite an accomplishment if you have more than 1,000 servers in your network.

Regarding security protocols, IPVanish actually has a lot to offer. PPTP, L2TP, OpenVPN, IPSec, and IKEv are all available depending on which device you use. For the average VPN user, you just want to make sure you can use OpenVPN, which is secure and still provides fast speeds, but having other options is always a good thing. (This article explains why if you’re interested.)

IPVanish also uses 256-bit encryption, which is military-grade and is what we expect established VPNs to have.

In addition, IPVanish offers unlimited bandwidth, unlimited P2P traffic, unlimited server switching, and anonymous torrenting. Of course, these are generally what most consumers would feel should be standard with a VPN service.

What we do love, however, is that you can connect up to 10 devices on a single license. That’s more than most other VPNs.

        So what’s bad about IPVanish?

There aren’t many cons to IPVanish, but recent reports show they might keep logs

Before we dive into the log problem, we also want to let you know that IPVanish cannot access Netflix. So if you’re using a VPN to watch and stream your favorite TV shows, you should look somewhere else.

The main issue, however, is the recent allegations that IPVanish keeps logs even though they claim not to.

IPVanish claims to have a strict zero logs policy (it’s the first sentence in their privacy policy). But in 2016, they provided data logs with the detailed information of someone involved in a child abuse and pornography investigation.

According to our research, the US Department of Homeland Security summoned that the parent company of IPVanish, Highwinds Network Group, provide user information.

IPVanish originally responded that could not comply.

However, after a second summons about a month later in June 2016, IPVanish answered with user information, including name, email address, IP address, and date and times he connected to the network.

Now, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. First, IPVanish is based in the United States. This means they are subject to any government laws in that country and the other 5-Eye Countries. They even state in their Terms of Service that you might be “subject to export control restrictions of the United States, the European Union, Canada or other jurisdictions.”

This is why it’s important to check where your VPN is based and choose one that is not subject to these laws (like ExpressVPN and NordVPN).

The second thing to think about is that IPVanish switched ownership in 2017.

In a statement from the CEO, Lance Crosby, StackPath acquired IPVanish in February 2017, more than a year after this lawsuit. Crosby went on to say that the new management guarantees they will not store data logs.

This means that although IPVanish claimed not to retain logs in 2016 and did, it’s entirely possible that they do not retain them now.

        Conclusion: Is IPVanish Safe?

According to their CEO, yes. But, there’s no way to guarantee they don’t store logs. Additionally, the fact that it is located in the US, one of the 5-Eyes Countries, whose governmental rules are stricter might limit IPVanish's capabilities to a certain degree.

Nonetheless, If you want a secure connection, good encryption, unlimited bandwidth and over a thousand servers to connect to, then there’s no reason not to try IPVanish. And over 100 reviewers agree that it’s a great service.

But, if you care about your data being logged (most privacy-conscious VPN users do), then you might want to look at some of our other options first.

You can download torrents on all IPVanish servers. This is a huge advantage since users are not restricted to particular servers which may be slow or in different locations.

Since the online privacy provider offers an unlimited bandwidth, users are able to download content at blinding speeds. The servers also allow a variety of encryption protocols when connecting, so users can choose their security level and torrent speeds.

File sharing is allowed using both uTorrent and BitTorrent protocols. The servers have no blocked services in any of their packages. They offer similar services to all users; prices only vary in relation to the duration that the users access services.

IPVanish is one of the best VPN providers out there when it comes to protecting your privacy online. The huge list of 400 servers in 61 countries means that you can keep your location confidential, while shared VPN connections make traffic completely untraceable. Crucially, IPVanish does not keep traffic logs of its user data so you remain completely anonymous.

Importantly, IPVanish is a tier-1 VPN provider, meaning they own their own servers around the world, translating to a more secure network for their customers. They also handle all software development and customer service in-house.  As of May 2018, they also offer 24/7 live chat support, so you can be sure you're getting the best of the best.

IPVanish offers a range of protocols including OpenVPN, PPTP and L2TP as well as 256-bit encryption.

The speed of the service was not always what it should be – sometimes it would slow, and that has the potential to be problematic for those who happen to do a lot of streaming. The service has the features that you expect, but there are few things that go “above and beyond” the call of duty to make it an ideal VPN.

Now, it is time to look at some of the features available with IPVanish. One of the best ways to determine whether a service is right for you or not is to look at the various features. Some have called IPVanish a “bare bones” VPN service because it offers only what you need for VPN without many frills or options. That might be true, but there are still some features to consider.

The service offers unlimited bandwidth, unlimited P2P traffic, unlimited server switching, and anonymous torrenting. Of course, these are generally what most consumers would feel should be standard with a VPN service.

IPVanish actually has quite a few options including PPTP, L2TP, OpenVPN, IPSec, and IKEv@. The service also offers 256-bit encryption. All of the servers are shared, and it avoids Google blocking.

Another one of the features of IPVanish that many enjoy is the high number of servers available. They have more than 400 servers across 60 countries, and they have more than 40,000 IP addresses.

The service will work with many different platforms as well. It works on Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, routers, Chromebooks, and Windows phones. Therefore, it should be able to work with just about any device that you might have. In fact, you are able to connect to up to ten devices at the same time! This can be helpful for those who happen to have more than one device they need to connect to the web, which is just about everyone today. You can use it for your desktop computer, your laptop, phones, and tablet, all at the same time.

The fastest encryption protocol to use with torrents is OpenVPN. Otherwise, it is also possible with other protocols, allowing the users more sophisticated 256-bit encryption when surfing the internet.

IPvanish VPN services are available for all Windows users. The Windows client offered by this online privacy provider is simple to configure and use. The interface is easy to understand and you can operate all functionalities of the software without lagging.

As the general VPN services offered are simplistic, the Windows client does not offer as many features as most other VPN providers. However, the features available seem enough to support the user’s needs.

The user has the ability to choose their location type using different options such as the map view.Additionally, the Windows client allows for periodic change in VPN services which is an advantage to the users that would like to change IPs and maintain stealth and stay free from hackers and prying eyes. The users are also able to choose the connection type that they need. It also has an option for launching on start-up.

The only downside is that the software features are all ported to the website. It also has the toolbar that allows users to operate most of the functionalities, but still remains slower than it would be with an application.

IPvanish software is compatible with Mac OS X. The client interface for Mac is basic and simple to use.

The user is able to change IPs occasionally. It is straightforward, with a toolbar interface that allows one to choose their location preferences, their IP addresses and has an easy option for turning VPN on/off. The user also has the option to auto-connect to the VPN servers when internet connection is established.

However, this VPN service does not have the kill switch option, offered on so many of the alternatives. This means that in case their servers disconnect, the users are liable to possible exposure. The option is important as it ensures that the users’ privacy and security is not compromised at all times. The reliability of their servers with over 95% uptime according to tests done as well as numerous customer reviews, reveals IPVanish to be a reasonable choice.

IPVanish VPN has an application for iPhone and iPad users. The application is readily available on Apple Store. It is a basic application that allows iOS device users to access content from other parts of the world with geo-restrictions, with a very fast connection. Installation of the application on iOS devices does not allow OpenVPN by default. However, the users have the option to configure the protocol if they prefer it.

OpenVPN is recommended for the users that need fast connections for streaming media, downloading torrents and sharing files. The iOS allows for PPTP and L2TP connection options by default. The users, therefore, have the options to choose from a range of protocols to find the best and most suitable for their use.

One of the questions that many people have when they are choosing a VPN service is the available protocols.

The IPVanish VPN provider has over 400 servers spread across 61 countries. Among them, are servers in the USA. A speed test carried out in different locations of the USA from the West Coast and East Coast showed that the country is well served despite the huge traffic, with reliable connections throughout. The speed for streaming media from Netflix, BBC and other programs is fast and secure.

The test ratings for IPVanish VPN agree with the website’s assertion of being a tier-1 VPN provider. The VPN provider offers unlimited bandwidth for all its subscription packages. It is arguably the most secure VPN provider, considering their zero logging policy. They offer shared VPN, which makes it more secure by making it impossible to track the users’ activities.
