PIA robs computers of their speed while the VPN is turned on.

I found out too late!! Here are my issues. Private Internet Access is "popular" because people are unaware and don't know until they've bought and it's too late. After purchasing this VPN (don't purchase this one) I installed on two computers and was told how to increase speed. Afterwards Charter raised their speed to 200 MB. Below are the results of my speed after the increase. I gave Private Internet Access my results and they are refusing to answer my questions and concerns (no response to 2 emails). Needless to say I will not renew. Charter raised internet speed to 200 and I get 200+ while not connected to this VPN. 1st Computer (windows 8.1). The following are my speeds (with adjustments) while connected to VPN and used the 2nd test which was usually a point or two lower or higher upd - auto 86.7 - 7.6 upd - 1194 87.6 - 7.5 upd - 8080 86.8 - 7.7 upd - 9201 85.1 - 7.7 upd - 53 76.0 - 7.2 tcp - 443 38.0 - 5.1 tcp - 110 48.0 - 5.6 tcp - 80 48.3 - 5.8 Why should it take 112.4 from my highest, which I will use, 87.6? I badly need help with this. 2nd Computer (windows 7 professional) Charter raised internet speed to 200 and I get 193.7+ while not connected to VPN. The following are my speeds (with adjustments) while connected to VPN and used the 2nd test which was usually a point or two lower or higher: upd - auto 39.8 - 4.9 upd - 1194 38.0 - 4.7 upd - 8080 37.2 - 4.7 upd - 9201 46.8 - 6.1 upd - 53 37.7- 4.8 tcp - 443 42.8 - 1.6 tcp - 110 44.0 - 1.7 tcp - 80 42.9 - 1.7

I will NOT be renewing my PIA subscription.

Very slow connection speed and I found it necessary to re-download the program about every three days in order to use the program at all. Customer support is terrible. The only thing good about this program is the price but in fact, "you get what you pay for". Don't waste your money.

Might As Well Buy Something With Better Odds. Like a Lotto Ticket.

PIA claims to have a 7 day money back guarantee. Just try getting your money back and see what happens. When I couldn’t get the Windows app working reliably I submitted multiple trouble tickets. All I got were useless script replies from a bot. So I asked for my money back. Multiple times. They just ignored me. I had to file a fraud claim with my credit card company. I've heard others say "PIA is the Walmart of VPNs.” Okay, I get that. But it’s unfair to Walmart. At least Walmart gives your money back if you’re unhappy, and they make it easy. Walmart also has real managers you can complain to who’ll take care of any problem. PIA has bots with useless scripts. What few real people PIA has are also useless. "PIA is the Walmart of VPNs"? I don't think so. PIA is more like a flashy Las Vegas used car dealership that makes big promises but sells you a lemon and then refuses to give your money back. Might as well take your money and buy a lotto ticket. Your odds are better with lotto than with PIA.

Compare Private Internet Access with the top alternative VPNs

        Features Description
Number of Server Locations (countries) 25
        Number of servers 3253
        Does VPN keep logs No
        Includes Kill Switch Yes
        Devices per license 5
        Ease of Use 4.7 / 5.0

Although the Private Internet Access (PIA) website looks a bit dated at first glance, installing PIA is fast and easy. After choosing a subscription plan and completing payment, you will receive an email containing your login credentials.

Downloading the correct software for your device takes only a minute or two. All that’s left is to enter your login credentials and PIA is ready to use.

You can connect to PIA right away with a single click. The app will automatically connect you to a nearby server.

The settings, which are easy to access and navigate, give you some freedom to customize the app, but the VPN can also be used right away without a hassle.

        Pricing 4.6 / 5.0
        Two Years
        $3.49 /month
        Yearly
        $5.99 /month
        Monthly
        $9.99/month

PIA offers three pricing packages, each with the same features. The only difference between plans is the subscription length. Discounts are offered on longer subscriptions.

PIA does not offer a free trial but does have a 7-day money-back guarantee. If you want to try out the service, we recommend purchasing a monthly plan and taking advantage of the money-back guarantee to decide if PIA is right for you before purchasing a longer subscription.

There are many different payment options, including major credit cards and popular online payment platforms. PIA also accepts several forms of anonymous payment, including gift cards, Bitcoin, and other cryptocurrencies.

        Reliability & Support 4.7 / 5.0

Despite the somewhat cluttered homepage, the PIA website’s support section is attractive and easy to navigate.

There are a number of helpful resources, including a searchable knowledgebase, FAQs, and detailed installation guides. You can also find documentation of all the features offered with the VPN. The troubleshooting and technical support resources are quite helpful and should be enough to solve most common concerns.

It’s a good thing that the website’s resources are so helpful because the only ways to get in touch with the support staff is to reach out on Twitter or to submit a request through the website’s ticket system.

Unfortunately, it can take over a day to receive a response. At the time of this review, there is a note on the support page explaining that response times are currently delayed due to higher than average ticket queues.

        The Bottom Line
        Sarit Newman
        (Internet Security Researcher)
User-friendly, affordable, and privacy-friendly, but has some downsides

PIA is a user-friendly VPN with robust security features that are easy to configure to meet your preferences.

The VPN performs well when it comes to security and anonymity, but inconsistent speeds and shaky geo-spoofing abilities mean that PIA isn’t the best choice for streaming.

We also weren’t very impressed with PIA’s customer support. Despite its downsides, PIA still has a lot to offer at an affordable price.

The iOS operating system has a default setting that does not allow the use of OpenVPN protocol. For this App, the L2TP setup is recommended. However, the user can configure the use of OpenVPN using simple steps that are available online. The application is simple to configure and operate and is available for download on the app store.

The application is a complete suite, with a kill switch, auto-start option, encryption details and server details. It also utilizes TCP connections, which is an ideal mode for mobile devices since the majority of users often use public Wi-Fi hotspots to surf the internet.

Private Internet Access (PIA) is one of the most affordable VPN service providers in the market. The online privacy provider boasts of over 3,000 servers, spread across 37 locations, in 25 countries. PIA a service provider based in the USA with ties to London-based Trust Media Inc. It offers a secure connection in a variety of protocols and highly sophisticated encryption levels like AES 256 for data stream encryption.

The encryption protocols available are PPTP, L2TP and OpenVPN, so there are a variety of options available to keep your data safe and secure from interception, but the company’s lack of transparency regarding its server locations and the number of IP addresses it offers are matters of concern. That’s because if there are only a few, the quality of the service you get may be affected. Apart from this, setting up this service is comparatively harder than for most of the other proxy services we have reviewed so far.
