HMA and NordVPN are two popular VPN providers that offer reliable service and top security features for an affordable price. Both VPNs are easy to set up, and both providers offer strong customer service, though NordVPN gets extra points for providing 24/7 live chat support. For security and privacy, it’s hard to beat NordVPN’s reputation. NordVPN has a strict no-logs policy and is based outside of the jurisdiction of the 14-Eyes alliance, in VPN-friendly Panama. HMA is based out of the UK (part of the 5, 9, and 14 eyes alliance) but since it doesn't keep logs there isn't anything to hand over even if a request for information is made. Still, HMA is best known for its minimalist, user-friendly design and wide network of 760 servers around the world. NordVPN takes the lead with 5,000+ servers, but HMA boasts an impressive 190 countries to choose from, compared to NordVPN’s 62. Things are heating up! Read on to find out which VPN comes out on top.

It’s not often that a VPN has cheap prices coupled with an excellent set of features. Yet, when my team and I looked at what NordVPN has to offer, this is exactly what we found. It offers a huge global network of servers, unblocks hundreds of streaming platforms, and has iron-clad security and privacy features — and you can get it all for just $3.29/month. I had to wonder what the catch was. ...

Best documentation was easy to understand

I came from Surfshark which never worked correctly. I had to run from the browser extension with supp... ort telling me it was my network that was causing the problem. That was rubbish. I set Nord up and had it running in a short time from the documentation. I only had to ask support about accessing more servers than just the one I saw. Great product.More

Average service, some nice features, rubbish support

Basic features work really well. Basically. I liked the feature that when Nord crashes (as it seems to...  do monthly) it will shut other apps so they aren't exposed. My subscription is based in Australia. Found downloads peak at about 1-1.5Mb/s, which is ok as long as you aren't playing online games. Don't go for the frills (though hard not to when they gamify them). I canceled my subscription because I added the Kill switch and then MFA. Nek Minnit I can't even log in. No way to remove the Kill switch without logging in. Uninstalled, reinstalled no joy. Went to the help page, and it redirected me to up my subscription as the only solution. No chatbot where I am. and I don't have an email app so couldn't email help. After a couple of hours of mucking around. Gave up and went to a competitor. Note: if I hadn't played with the security settings, I would still be with Nord. But if I can't log in, it's a dead service to me.More

Being on the market for more than 15 years, the UK-based HMA has established an excellent name for itself (literally). But, is HMA really worth a shot when there are so many other high quality VPNs out there? To find out, I performed extensive tests on its speeds, security, unblocking abilities, and more. I also explored its no-logs policy and money-back guarantee to see how trustworthy it is....

Excellent value for money!

First, it's a full VPN. Very intuitive and easy app. Lots of connection options and without much loss ... of speed. The official website has the payment method in my local currency, with a localized value and thus leaving a fair value through the VPN. Thank VPNMentor for the product recommendation and targeted discount.More

Used it for 5+ years - very poor connection now and no support

On a new Windows 11 machine, HMA connects and disconnects every minute or so. When it is connected pag... es take a long time to load. I'm a loyal customer and reached out for assistance 19 days ago. An auto-response comes right back promising someone will get in contact with me but no one ever does. I made 4 attempts in the past 2 plus weeks but no one appears to be working in customer service. Reading other comments my experience was not unique - there were others too that attempted to get help and then ultimately canceled. I got another VPN (Express) and although it costs a little more it works and is reliable. Unlike HMA Express seems to allow viewing of Prime movies while connected - which will work on vacation in Mexico or other countries. A recent rating of VPNs HMA doesn't make the top 5 anymore - it seems to be going kaput.More

Best VPNs by category

Both VPNs offer competitive features for an affordable price. Panama-based NordVPN is the more privacy-friendly option because of its strict no-logs policy. It also continually impresses users with its reliable coverage, topnotch customer service, and advanced security features. HMA focuses on creating a smooth, user-friendly experience with three preset modes to choose from, while offering convenient add-ons like a fast file upload service.

Both VPNs support torrenting and protect your identity with strong encryption and an effective kill switch. Although HMA does a great job safeguarding your privacy in general, and was verified no-logs in an independent audit by VerSprite. In addition, NordVPN has significantly more servers designated for P2P, which means it generally surpasses HMA in speed.

NordVPN’s dedicated Windows app makes it easy to quickly set up and go, and it’s also packed with optional advanced settings to customize your experience. HMA’s app offers limited adjustable settings in comparison, but it’s a good choice for fans of OpenVPN since it uses the OpenVPN protocol by default.

HMA secures your Android’s internet connection with its default OpenVPN protection, but unfortunately the app doesn’t offer a kill switch. The user-friendly NordVPN app has a built-in kill switch and offers a range of secure protocols to choose from, including TCP/UDP OpenVPN connections, Double VPN, and Onion over VPN.

NordVPN’s advanced settings make it the best choice if you want to be able to fully customize your VPN. You can choose between an OpenVPN-based app and an IKEv2-based app. HMA’s well-designed Mac app comes equipped with a kill switch and the IPsec security protocol by default, but it doesn’t support OpenVPN.

NordVPN’s iOS app protects your data using the secure IKEv2/IPsec protocol and gives you access to specialty servers for P2P, along with Onion over VPN and Double VPN protocols. On the other hand, the HMA iOS VPN app really shines when it comes to easily streaming your favorite shows.

Both VPNs are able to bypass geo-restrictions on top US streaming sites like Netflix, Hulu, and HBO. NordVPN makes streaming your favorite geo-restricted content incredibly simple with its SmartPlay feature, which automatically reroutes your traffic through a server that can access the content you want. In addition to its advanced security features, NordVPN provides a super fast and reliable service to users in the US, with nearly 2,000 servers in the country – more than HMA has in its entire global network!

The Bottom Line

NordVPN and HMA both offer user-friendly app designs, responsive customer service, and 30-day money-back guarantees. Both VPNs let you bypass the tough geoblocks on top streaming services. You can also connect a similar number of simultaneous devices with these providers: six with NordVPN and five with HMA. If your main goal is to easily avoid censorship and government web monitoring, HMA’s simple, one-click connection modes might be ideal for you. Freedom Mode automatically connects you to the fastest server in a nearby pro-free speech country, giving you instant protection from surveillance and easy access to censored content. With servers in so many countries, HMA also might be the best choice for you if you’re in a country far from any NordVPN servers. However, it’s hard to compete with NordVPN’s security and performance. In the end, NordVPN comes out on top with its customizable security features, oustanding streaming performance, unbeaten network reliability, and commitment to user privacy. When you combine all that with industry-leading 24/7 live chat customer support and fast connection speeds, NordVPN proves itself to be an excellent choice for both new and experienced VPN users.
