Hotspot Shield is a popular VPN service with over 650 million users and multiple servers in 110+ countries. In fact, the website claims it is the #1 grossing app for productivity in the US App Store. (When we checked the App Store source, it actually indicated #8, which is still an impressive ranking.) One of the features that make Hotspot Shield special is its unique Catapult Hydra protoco...

Great Interface, easy to use and smooth/zippy.

It just feels well put together. Turns on automatically, which is no bad thing (if you don't like that... , turn the damn thing off with a click). The speed is consistently above average, and on a couple of inadvertent occasions, the Kill Switch operated as it should. I especially like the GUI, which is really simple, solid, yet has a refined/slick feel - far superior to a few I've tried but won't name here. I see no issues with it, although the security issues pointed out in the article are a bit alarming. I'm using the 'Business' version. Nice VPN, IMO.More

SurfEasy is a VPN only provider from Opera, a Canadian software company with many years of experience. Like our top VPNs (IPVanish and ExpressVPN, which we suggest you take a look at), SurfEasy offers the general package of what you would expect with a VPN. The service offers protocols and encryption. They have over a thousand servers in thirteen different countries, including Brazil, Austral...

Been using for over a year with no issues

It works well on my Android phones. I've had no issues with speed, dropped connections, etc. What I di... d find interesting with this pages review is that they recommend NordVPN over SE because "it's more trustworthy", yet Nord was hacked recently. So in the end, no VPN could be safe.More

With 2,500+ servers, Hotspot Shield has a larger number of servers worldwide, but SurfEasy has a larger number of server locations. In terms of security, Hotspot Shield incorporates the OpenSSL library into its encryption, while SurfEasy offers an additional protocol of IPsec if the user chooses.

Although Hotspot Shield allows P2P traffic, it’s not the VPN for you if torrenting is a priority. That’s because Hotspot Shield does keep partial logs. The company is under the jurisdiction of the U.S, the founder of the 5-Eyes Alliance and a global leader in online surveillance. This could make you an easy target for copyright trolls or DMCA requests – especially if you’re a US resident. SurfEasy, on the other hand, is a no-logs VPN provider. It has a feature called “auto-enable” for secure torrenting. Additionally, it offers dedicated torrent servers.

Hotspot Shield offers Windows users easy configuration with an app that you can download straight from the Windows Store. Its intuitive interface allows you to adjust your Windows VPN preferences with ease. SurfEasy’s emphasis on security ensures that any work emails sent through Outlook or professional documents online will be automatically encrypted, which is good news for you if you use Windows for work.

Hotspot Shield offers a unique Android app featuring malware protection that you can get from the Google Play store. This scans your device and apps for potential threats and removes any harmful software with the touch of a button. SurfEasy also has an android app available from the Google Play store. This app offers ad-tracking blocking, a nice feature for users concerned about the security of their personal data.

Mac users are used to their devices working out of the box, which is why you will be happy that no configuration is needed when you install Hotspot Shield. You also probably use your Mac for everything and a lot of tracking and security data is stored on your device as well, which makes SurfEasy ideal for you with its bank-grade encryption.

Hotspot Shield offers a highly secure connection that is optimized for social media, allowing you to use your apps safely even when you’re connected to public wi-fi. SurfEasy offers an app for iOS on the iTunes store which is important to iPhone users who use their device for practically everything and who also value security.

Hotspot Shield has servers based in the United States, allowing users to access content such as Netflix US and Hulu that may otherwise have been restricted. SurfEasy is based out of Canada and has servers located in the USA. It can unblock popular streaming services such as Netflix US and Amazon Prime Video.

The Bottom Line

SurfEasy and Hotspot Shield are both reputable companies that have operated for many years, and both VPNs are reliable and fast. However, if you are more interested in streaming you’ll appreciate the lightning-fast speed of Hotspot Shield which also does a good job of granting you access to services like Netflix US, Amazon, and Hulu. On the other hand, if your priority is torrenting, you will likely prefer SurfEasy, a VPN provider with fast, dedicated torrent servers.
