TunnelBear VPN vs oVPN.to 2024

Choosing between oVPN.to and TunnelBear comes down to your needs and your experience with VPNs. oVPN.to is incredibly complex to use and dedicated more to online privacy than accessing streaming sites or torrenting. On the other hand, TunnelBear is less hot on privacy but provides simple, intuitive apps with decent unblocking abilities.

If I'm being honest, neither service is particularly good when it comes to speeds. oVPN has a tiny server network, which can lead to overcrowding and slow connections. TunnelBear's network is a little bigger, but still unreliable on long-distance servers.

Both VPNs support torrenting and have no-logs policies, but their locations can cause issues. oVPN claims to operate under the jurisdiction of your home country. So, if torrenting is a problem there, your connection may get shut down. TunnelBear is based in Canada and owned by McAfee. That means it operates under both Canadian and US jurisdictions — not exactly the most privacy-friendly countries.

Neither are great on price either. oVPN offers a huge range of plans, but they're all quite expensive for what you get. TunnelBear has a completely free option, but you're severely restricted in your usage (just 500MB a month). Its paid plans are affordable, but no more so than other VPNs that offer better speeds and servers.

That all being said, TunnelBear does beat oVPN.to (only just). However, for the all-round best VPN experience, I recommend you try ExpressVPN that is also supported by a 30-day money-back guarantee.

TunnelBear is one of the most beginner-friendly VPNs, offering a solid free version. Despite its adorable design, it’s also renowned for its security and privacy features. But can you truly rely on this lighthearted VPN to protect you the way the best providers can? After extensive tests, I can confirm that TunnelBear is an excellent VPN with great potential. It’s straightforward to use, d...

    Best VPN by Category

    Best VPN Overall

TunnelBear is better overall. I prefer it for its ease-of-use, superior unblocking abilities, and useful bonus features. oVPN is a fairly bare-bones service that's well-suited to tech experts, but probably too complicated to configure if you're a VPN beginner.

    Best VPN for Torrents

TunnelBear is better, but only just. oVPN supports P2P traffic but makes it pretty clear on its website that it might shut you down if torrenting isn't allowed in your country. TunnelBear has a decent no-logs policy so I feel a bit safer using it for torrenting.

    Best VPN for Windows

TunnelBear is better because its Windows app comes with a range of clever bonus features like GhostBear. This is essentially a stealth mode that conceals your VPN traffic, allowing you to bypass firewalls and VPN blocks.

    Best VPN for Android

TunnelBear is better because its Android app supports split tunneling (SplitBear). That means you can route some of your mobile apps through the VPN, and choose others to use with your regular ISP. I find this useful for unblocking content with my browser, but accessing my banking app outside of the VPN (to avoid triggering any alerts on my account).

    Best VPN for Mac

TunnelBear is better. Its macOS app comes with VigilantBear, an automatic kill switch. This kicks in to block your internet connection if the VPN goes down, preventing your online activity and location from being leaked. oVPN doesn't support a kill switch or leak protection on any of its apps.

    Best VPN for iOS

TunnelBear is better because its iOS app has an Always On mode. This setting automatically launches the VPN everytime you activate your device. It's great for keeping you protected if you frequently connect your iPhone or iPad to public WiFi networks (which are usually unsecured and vulnerable to hackers).

    Best VPN for USA

TunnelBear is better because it is slightly better at unblocking American streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Max. oVPN can unblock Netflix, but only if you contact the support team in advanced to request a special private IP address.

    The Bottom Line

I choose TunnelBear over oVPN because it's much easier to use and gives you better value for your money. Although oVPN is more privacy-focused, it's complicated to set up and gave me pretty bad results on my speed tests.

If I had the choice though, I wouldn't go for either of these VPNs. There are services out there that have better security and privacy measures than oVPN, and can unblock more sites and services than TunnelBear. For example, ExpressVPN can do all of the above and more. It's also the fastest VPN I've tested, so you don't have to put up with slow or unreliable connections like you have to do with TunnelBear and oVPN.
