These two VPN providers offer very different services. With AirVPN, you can expect to find advanced features like port forwarding, a kill switch, and leak protection, all of which are absent with TotalVPN. While TotalVPN supports multiple encryption protocols including OpenVPN, PPTP, Cisco IPSec, and IkeV2, AirVPN competes with OpenVPN over SSL, SSH and Tor. AirVPN and TotalVPN both use 256-bit encryption across their services, and both VPNs offer 30-day money-back guarantees. However, since TotalVPN is shutting down its business and is no longer open to new subscribers, its guarantee is essentially mythical at this point. The decision to shut down also means that TotalVPN’s apps are no longer available for download if you do not currently have a version on your device. Finally, although both VPNs have dedicated US servers, only AirVPN can reliably bypasses the tough geoblocks on content providers like US Netflix and Hulu. Keep on reading to see our category-by-category analysis of AirVPN and TotalVPN.

AirVPN is a budget-friendly option that claims to provide robust protection against online threats. Plus, it says it offers high-performance servers. But can it really rival the top VPNs, or is the price so low because it’s not that good? After testing all its features, I found that AirVPN is secure, but it can't match the best VPNs. It has many great security features, solid speeds and works...

I am AirVpn cusomers since 2015, and on my gear works remarkably well

I am working in the biggest country in Asia since 2006. I constantly use AirVpn on my MacBook Pro sinc... e 2015, and on my iPhone - iPad. I never had an issue, of any kind, with it, and I was quite amazed to read the article above. Lately, it is very difficult to get it properly run on iPhone and iPad, but this is more the result of this country where I live in restrictions than the vpn in itself. While in Hong Kong was still working fine, but as soon as I crossed the border troubles started. I will tweak that as soon as I will be out again. In the rest of the world, I never had issues. So I do not give the 5th star just because of my at present troubles using it on my iPhone and iPad. For the rest, I will stick with it.More

TotalVPN is going out of business, and the company no longer accepts new customers or extends subscriptions. The company, however, will remain active for all existing customers until the renewal date. We spoke with TotalVPN's customer service to confirm this: For current customers, we included our original review below. Looking for a straight-forward VPN service with good network speed? Tota...

Free plan is a waste of time but regular one is one of the best

I tried the free plan and I must say, you watch a YouTube video or two and you max out your limited ba... ndwidth... very annoying and not worth the time to sign up. At the same time, of course I upgraded and since, I enjoy high quality fast streaming. It doesn't worth going the extra annoying free step, I suggest paying a few bucks and saving your time. There just isn't a good free VPN, they are after our money. But again, I must admit, I really think it is a good deal that pays off.More

    Not the best in town

It is impossible to remove TotalVPN. The Windows service (named OVPNService) and related driver rema... in there after uninstall. Setup files remain there after uninstall. The Windows network connection and its tray icon remain there. Their chat agents are totally clueless about this. They suggest to remove manually the app in the Program folder, but the app does not install there. ... and did I mention that all the free servers (just 2) did not work?More

    Best VPN by Category

    Best VPN Overall

AirVPN is a much more attractive VPN provider than TotalVPN, with many advanced features, a larger network of servers, and innovative technology to bypass very tough geo-restrictions. TotalVPN offers a simple and straightforward service, with basic security features and user-friendly, cross-platform apps.

    Best VPN for Torrents

We recommend using AirVPN’s service for downloading torrents anonymously, as the VPN offers an unrestricted P2P service and features dynamic port forwarding to help you remain anonymous. TotalVPN also allows torrenting on its servers and places no restrictions on P2P activity.

    Best VPN for Windows

AirVPN provides a better service for Windows, with a dedicated app that features a Dynamic DNS, strong encryption, and support for OpenVPN over Tor, SSL, and SSH. TotalVPN has a dedicated Windows app that features 256-bit encryption and access to all the provider’s servers.

    Best VPN for Android

You won’t find a dedicated Android app with AirVPN, but you can configure it via the generic OpenVPN app on Play Store and still benefit from strong encryption. TotalVPN used to provide a dedicated Android app, but it is no longer available for download by new subscribers.

    Best VPN for Mac

With an app that features port forwarding, a built-in DNS, a kill switch, and strong encryption, AirVPN is our clear choice for MacOS users. TotalVPN also has a MacOS app that gives existing subscribers protection from tracking and wi-fi hacking.

    Best VPN for iOS

AirVPN can be easily configured on iOS devices using the OpenVPN app, and the service features strong encryption and access to the provider’s entire network of servers. AirVPN also supports up to five simultaneous device connections per subscriber. TotalVPN’s app for iOS is no longer available for download by new users, but for existing subscribers, it features a smooth user interface and support for three simultaneous connections per account.

    Best VPN for USA

AirVPN is a better VPN for accessing geoblocked American content from any location worldwide. A unique feature allows you to access US Netflix from any AirVPN server, even those in other countries. Although TotalVPN has dedicated US servers for accessing US content, it is unable to unblock US Netflix.

    The Bottom Line

AirVPN wins this comparison in nearly every area with relative ease. With a more responsive customer support channel, faster server connections, and a larger VPN network, AirVPN has all the essential VPN features casual users might need. TotalVPN’s decision to close down the business means that there will not be any improvements to the service in the future. AirVPN, however, provides better value for your money and will continue to upgrade its service.
