In the highly competitive VPN market, TorGuard Anonymous VPN and Private Internet Access (PIA) stand out for their overall reliability and large networks of servers. Both VPNs have more than 3,000 servers, although Torguard’s network is spread across more than 50 countries, compared to PIA’s 33 countries. TorGuard and PIA also both prioritize security, offering 256-bit encryption and additional privacy protection features like a kill switch and DNS leak protection.

Differences between these two VPNs can be found in the areas of customer service and enhanced features. TorGuard offers an amazing 24/7 live chat support facility, whereas PIA offers assistance only via a contact form. TorGuard also offers additional privacy services like encrypted email. PIA stays competitive, however, by offering more user-friendly apps and less expensive subscription plans. Keep on reading to see which of these VPNs comes out on top across several areas we tested.

Private Internet Access has one of the cheapest VPN subscriptions available — you can sign up for as little as $2.19/month. With such a low price, I wondered whether PIA could really stand out against its higher-priced competitors. It’s been around for 10+ years, so it could be one of the best-value VPNs out there. I decided to find out just how good it is by looking into the company’s lo...

Best VPN Out on The Market

I like PIA VPN the best for the following reasons: ● It's a reliable and trustworthy policy; they don... 't record anything harmful to you; strict no logs. ● I've been using it for one month and there are specific times when it speeds up my internet speed (varies by internet) ● It's a distinctive feature of DIP (dedicated IP) - I think not many popular VPNs have this feature, I also purchased this feature to avoid getting the captcha verification and it never showed up ever since. It's only been a month using this VPN but as I gain more experience with this client, I'm pretty sure I will find more good features and utilize them. Thanks for having read my review:)More

I was not happy with them

The use of PIA is detected by a lot of websites and you get constantly banned. I try to contact them ... but the contact form doesn't work. Needless to say, if the form doesn't work you can't claim your 30 days money-back guarantee. So I lost my money have no sense with the product and can't do anything.More

Have been with them for several years, love their service

November 2021 PING ms 16 DOWNLOAD Mbps 254.92 UPLOAD Mbps 10.79 (running atop Comcast cable broad... band Docsis 3.0) I had previously been using on per device using the available tg vpn clients (in my case Linux & android). They recently upgraded all their vpn servers to wireguard based service. I had to manually reconfigure the client at that point as the switchover from OpenVPN to wireguard protocols broke my connection, though after that all was well again. I have since acquired a Netgate 1100 pfSense+ Security Gateway, and configured failover torguard VPNs to the 3 closest torguard sites as wireguard VPNs on the security gateway (Torguard has a tools page in the member's area that will generate configuration details to use for router/gateway vpn configuration). Running everything through the security gateway, you can specify which devices you want over the vpn or not, and set a killswitch firewall rule to cut off your connection if the vpn goes down if that is important for your use case. I've been using torguard primarily for BitTorrent the whole time (even prior to the user via the security gateway) without any issues and always with great download speeds. Not sure about those complaining about speed, but as you can see the above stats which I just ran off speedtest.net when writing this post, these are decent speeds and not much overhead (I think the best ever d/l I've gotten on the raw Comcast non-vpn is about ~275-280 MPs), using their nearest point of presence which is approx 90 miles from my origin IP. Wireguard gives much better performance than OpenVPN-based vpn protocols. They sometimes offer special (permanent) discount pricing, which I took advantage of so they have turned out to be a very reasonably cheap service for me, renewing at the discount price yearly. Their customer support has always been responsive whenever I've had questions. LaurenMore

Does not work with firestick

Their VPN does not work with 1st gen firesticks. They did not post this on their site. I paid $60 for ... a 1-year membership. After 7 days got a notice from Spectrum 18 complaints "Notice of Copyright Infringement" emails from the spectrum. Contact billing for refund, they gave me the runaround and kept asking the same questions over and over again. Then told me a refund is not available after 7 days. However, it takes spectrum over 7 days to send a complaint and they never said it didn't work with 1st gen firestick. Also, the app connected to vpn through the firestick and never said it had an issue. So this company is scamming, do not use it if you want to get a "Notice of Copyright Infringement" letter from Spectrum and no refund.More

Best VPNs by category

Based on its reliability, competitive pricing, and user-friendliness, PIA comes out on top in our overall comparison. However, TorGuard also provides a very secure VPN with servers spread across 50+ countries.

PIA supports P2P file sharing, including torrenting, and offers more reliable download speeds. TorGuard also allows users to anonymously download torrents using any BitTorrent app.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced VPN user, you’ll appreciate the very easy setup of PIA’s user-friendly Windows app. TorGuard VPN also has a dedicated app for Windows, but with a less user-friendly interface.

PIA offers very fast VPN connection speeds and strong encryption on its dedicated Android app. TorGuard also offers a very good Android app, with unlimited bandwidth and unrestricted speed.

Torguard’s VPN app for MacOS offers a unique stealth mode that allows users bypass the toughest geoblocks and VPN blocks worldwide. PIA users get the benefit of a secure MacOS app with DNS leak protection and a kill switch.

PIA has a beautifully designed iOS app with ad and malware blockers and very strong encryption. TorGuard has no ad or malware blocker on its iOS app, but does offer very fast VPN connection speeds.

PIA has dedicated US servers that effectively and consistently unblock most streaming sites in the US. PIA users have complained, however, that it does not unblock Netflix. Torguard can unblock Netflix, but only if you use dedicated IPs, which it offers at an additional cost to premium subscribers.

The Bottom Line

With a ton of features and a very user-friendly interface, PIA is the winner of this VPN provider comparison. PIA also offers faster connection speeds, more affordable VPN subscription plans, and a 30-day money-back guarantee. The major drawbacks of TorGuard are that its apps are less user-friendly and that it only offers a 7-day money-back guarantee.

It’s worth noting, however, that PIA and TorGuard VPN are very similar in many ways. Both allow up to 5 simultaneous connections and your choice of over 3,000 servers with good global coverage. Users can do well with either VPN.
