Astrill VPN and TotalVPN are very different providers in many, many ways. You can expect to find advanced features like split tunneling, a Stealth VPN protocol, and leak protection exclusively in Astrill’s service. In spite of its name, TotalVPN offers anything but a complete VPN service, only managing to provide strong encryption and tracking protection as its core security features. And while Astrill continues to make regular service improvements, TotalVPN has decided to close its business so future improvements are not to be expected. Finally, if you’re interested in unblocking geo-restricted content like US Netflix, you should know that only Astrill can help you bypass tough geoblocks and VPN screens. There are, however, a few similarities shared by these two VPNs. They both provide apps for all major platforms, although TotalVPN’s apps are no longer available for download by new subscribers. Astrill and TotalVPN also both allow torrenting on their servers. We’ve provided a side-by-side comparison of these two VPNs below to help you decide which is better for you.

Astrill’s marketing team does a great job of advertising it as one of the best VPNs out there, especially in China — but are they telling the truth about how good it is? I tested every feature and analyzed its privacy policies and security measures to see if it’s good enough to recommend. I also paid attention to its server network, speeds, torrenting support, gaming, streaming and final...

Been using it for a long time.. but have to go

I have been using Astrill for more than 10 years. Never had a problem. A couple of times I used the ch... at for support and it was excellent. However this is probably going to be my last year. Reason .... price. With the virus crisis I am unemployed and can not afford it. They do not give any kind of discount and keep raising the price year after year. I am not in China so I suspend it, I do not need all those features.More

TotalVPN is going out of business, and the company no longer accepts new customers or extends subscriptions. The company, however, will remain active for all existing customers until the renewal date. We spoke with TotalVPN's customer service to confirm this: For current customers, we included our original review below. Looking for a straight-forward VPN service with good network s...

Free plan is a waste of time but regular one is one of the best

I tried the free plan and I must say, you watch a YouTube video or two and you max out your limited ba... ndwidth... very annoying and not worth the time to sign up. At the same time, of course I upgraded and since, I enjoy high quality fast streaming. It doesn't worth going the extra annoying free step, I suggest paying a few bucks and saving your time. There just isn't a good free VPN, they are after our money. But again, I must admit, I really think it is a good deal that pays off.More

    Not the best in town

It is impossible to remove TotalVPN. The Windows service (named OVPNService) and related driver rema... in there after uninstall. Setup files remain there after uninstall. The Windows network connection and its tray icon remain there. Their chat agents are totally clueless about this. They suggest to remove manually the app in the Program folder, but the app does not install there. ... and did I mention that all the free servers (just 2) did not work?More

    Best VPN by category

Astrill VPN provides a more well-rounded service, with a fine balance of advanced features, great support, and easy-to-use apps for all major platforms. TotalVPN also provides a secure service with strong encryption and dedicated cross-platform apps for existing users. Its major drawback is the fact that the company is currently phasing out the service.

Astrill provides high-speed dedicated servers for torrenting and other P2P file sharing, and backs this support up with additional features to keep you anonymous. TotalVPN also allows torrenting on its servers, with no restrictions on P2P traffic.

Astrill provides a very attractive VPN service for Windows that includes a dedicated app, a Stealth VPN protocol, an internet-based kill switch, and protection from DNS and WebRTC leaks. TotalVPN competes with its own Windows client that features strong encryption and tracking protection.

The standout features of Astrill VPN’s app for Android include its kill switch and a smart mode that allows you to decide which apps or websites connect via the VPN. Although TotalVPN’s Android app is no longer available for new subscribers, the app available to existing subscribers features a colorful interface and wi-fi protection.

We recommend Astrill VPN for MacOS because the app features split tunneling, stealth VPN, and Onion over VPN. TotalVPN’s app for MacOS lacks a kill switch, but it does offer a user-friendly layout and support for multiple VPN protocols, including OpenVPN, L2TP, and PPTP.

A Smart mode that allows you specify which applications connect via the VPN, along with a kill switch and strong encryption, makes Astrill our clear choice for a VPN service for iOS users. TotalVPN also has an iOS app that features strong encryption and tracking protection, but as with all TotalVPN apps, it is currently available only to existing subscribers.

Astrill is our recommended choice for access to geoblocked US content from providers like Netflix and Hulu. The network includes many dedicated US servers for this purpose. Meanwhile, TotalVPN also has a dedicated US server, but is currently unable to unblock Netflix or similar American websites.

    The Bottom Line

Astrill wins this one-sided contest by providing a more reliable and consistent VPN service in every area, including geoblock bypassing, overall security, responsive support, and availability of up-to-date apps. In most cases, you’ll also get faster connections with Astrill VPN.

Time to decide which one is best for you

Is Astrill VPN better than TotalVPN?

Yes, Astrill VPN is better overall than TotalVPN. It has 114 servers in 57 countries, fast speeds, and impressive security features.

Best of all, you can take advantage of its latest discount and get it for only $12.5 a month.

What should I keep in mind when choosing between Astrill VPN and TotalVPN?

When choosing a VPN, you want to pay close attention to its number of servers, overall speed score, pricing, and the number of simultaneous device connections it offers. While some VPNs provide a flawless online experience, others will really slow you down.

If you’re ready to commit, then Astrill VPN may be perfect for you due to its performance during the tests .

Is Astrill VPN faster than TotalVPN?

Yes, Astrill VPN is faster than TotalVPN. Since your VPN is your computer’s main connection to the internet, you need to use a service that won’t slow you down by more than 20%.

If speeds are important to you, then I recommend you take a look at ExpressVPN. It’s the fastest service out there, provides unlimited bandwidth, and you won’t experience any slowdowns even when you connect to the other side of the planet. You can try it out risk-free.
