Right off the bat, Hotspot Shield’s provision of over 2,500 servers in 25+ countries sets it miles ahead of TotalVPN in terms of network coverage. As a result, Hotspot shield consistently offers much faster connections regardless of your online purpose. While Hotspot Shield effectively unblocks Netflix-US and hundreds of similar streaming platforms, TotalVPN is unable to do the same. However, when it comes to downloading torrents anonymously, only TotalVPN can be relied on here, as Hotspot Shield completely prohibits the activity on its entire network of servers. Although both VPNs offer dedicated apps for MacOS, Windows, iOS, and Android devices, TotalVPN’s apps are no longer available for download because the provider has stopped accepting new subscribers. In fact, while Hotspot Shield continues to grow and expand, TotalVPN is in the process of winding up its business. Both providers offer strong encryption and support for multiple VPN protocols, but Hotspot Shield goes further by offering additional features like malware protection. Keep on reading to see why this comparison quickly becomes a decisive victory for the better VPN. NOTE: This comparison focuses on Hotspot Shield Elite, the paid version of Hotspot Shield’s service.

Hotspot Shield claims its proprietary Hydra protocol makes it faster than most VPNs — but is that true? I tested HSS on my fast internet connection (it allows up to 1Gbps speeds) to discover how it does with streaming, gaming, and torrenting. Mostly, I had a seamless internet experience — watching shows on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video without buffering. Its 1,800 servers in 80 countries ...

Great Interface, easy to use and smooth/zippy.

It just feels well put together. Turns on automatically, which is no bad thing (if you don't like that... , turn the damn thing off with a click). The speed is consistently above average, and on a couple of inadvertent occasions, the Kill Switch operated as it should. I especially like the GUI, which is really simple, solid, yet has a refined/slick feel - far superior to a few I've tried but won't name here. I see no issues with it, although the security issues pointed out in the article are a bit alarming. I'm using the 'Business' version. Nice VPN, IMO.More

Blocked by Real-Debrid on just about every us city and nearly all countries

Easy to connect speed pretty good multiple platforms not great from streaming.. which is where you nee... d the speed. Nord vpn and Express are both cooperative providers with real-debrid meaning no connection problems. Even if you do find a server that connects frequently this is blocked during streaming.More

TotalVPN is going out of business, and the company no longer accepts new customers or extends subscriptions. The company, however, will remain active for all existing customers until the renewal date. We spoke with TotalVPN's customer service to confirm this: For current customers, we included our original review below. Looking for a straight-forward VPN service with good network s...

Free plan is a waste of time but regular one is one of the best

I tried the free plan and I must say, you watch a YouTube video or two and you max out your limited ba... ndwidth... very annoying and not worth the time to sign up. At the same time, of course I upgraded and since, I enjoy high quality fast streaming. It doesn't worth going the extra annoying free step, I suggest paying a few bucks and saving your time. There just isn't a good free VPN, they are after our money. But again, I must admit, I really think it is a good deal that pays off.More

Not the best in town

It is impossible to remove TotalVPN. The Windows service (named OVPNService) and related driver rema... in there after uninstall. Setup files remain there after uninstall. The Windows network connection and its tray icon remain there. Their chat agents are totally clueless about this. They suggest to remove manually the app in the Program folder, but the app does not install there. ... and did I mention that all the free servers (just 2) did not work?More

Best VPNs by category

Hotspot Shield’s continuous growth and provision of thousands of servers and innovative security features add up to an excellent service overall. TotalVPN also offers a decent service, but its decision to close business operations means that there will be no further improvements going forward.

TotalVPN offers a single dedicated server for torrenting and P2P file-sharing activities, and is a reliable service for this purpose. Hotspot Shield forbids torrenting on its network and so would not be an ideal VPN for P2P activities, to put it mildly.

Hotspot Shield is our recommended VPN for Windows, as it provides a dedicated app that’s user-friendly and includes features like malware protection and access to dedicated streaming servers. The best things about TotalVPN’s dedicated Windows app are the tracking protection and strong encryption it provides.

Hotspot Shield’s dedicated Android app is easy to set up, as it requires no additional configuration after installation. It also protects users from malware and offers access to the provider’s entire network of 2,500 servers in 25+ countries. TotalVPN is no longer available for download by new Android subscribers due to plans to close the business. However, existing subscribers who already have the app installed on their Android devices can still benefit from its 256-bit encryption and wi-fi protection.

Hotspot Shield offers a powerful dedicated MacOS app that features its unique Catapult Hydra technology, which improves network speed through effective data compression. TotalVPN also has a MacOS app with a smooth user interface. It lacks a kill switch but offers military-grade encryption and support for multiple VPN protocols, including OpenVPN, PPTP, and IKEv2.

If you own several iOS gadgets, we recommend Hotspot Shield, as it has a dedicated app fortified with numerous security features and support for up to five simultaneous device connections. TotalVPN’s iOS app is only available for existing subscribers who already have it installed on their devices. It is a nice app, however, offering features like tracking protection and access to around 38 servers in 18 countries.

With hundreds of US servers and a dedicated streaming feature that allows you unlock sites with tough geoblocks like Netflix and Hulu, Hotspot Shield is our recommended VPN service for the USA. Although TotalVPN offers a US server, it is no longer capable of unblocking Netflix-US and similar American content providers.

The Bottom Line

Hotspot Shield is a far better VPN provider and decisively wins this nearly one-sided comparison. It offers far more servers, faster connections, and more value for your money overall. Unique Catapult Hydra technology and a dedicated streaming feature are two of the many advantages it has over TotalVPN, which fails to access many content providers like Netflix-US. The availability of more innovative features and a support team dedicated to ongoing service improvements make Hotspot Shield the clear choice over a competitor that is really just biding its time until current subscriptions expire. If you need to download torrents, however, Hotspot Shield won’t work for you. Instead, look to top VPN providers like NordVPN and CyberGhost that offer larger networks, exceptional speeds, and surprisingly budget-friendly prices.
