Note: ProXPN, unfortunately, no longer offers its VPN services. While it’s out of the race, the battle between IVPN and VPN Unlimited is white hot, which is why we’ll compare them for you below.

IVPN is a mid-tier VPN that’s known for punching above its weight in terms of providing a solid, private, and secure VPN service. VPN Unlimted is a top-tier provider but hasn’t gained the same popularity as some of the most prominent VPN names. Both companies have also taken drastically different approaches toward their VPN offerings, making for an interesting comparison.

VPN Unlimited is headquartered in the US, one of the founding members of the 5 Eyes Alliance. IVPN, on the other hand, is based in Gibraltar, which, although a British territory, provides greater protection against the disclosure of user information.

With 3,000 servers across 56 countries, VPN Unlimited has an elite-level global server network. IVPN has a much smaller network, but its coverage includes most regions.

In terms of features, VPN Unlimited went all out. It offers 6 secure VPN protocols, a password vault, and other add-on security tools. IVPN stuck with highly effective capabilities to keep your online activity private, like multi-hop and a tracker blocker.

Both have affordable and flexible pricing options and back their services with money-back guarantees. While IVPN offers a 1-week plan and cheaper short-term pricing, VPN Unlimited is one of the only VPNs with a lifetime plan.

Established in Gibraltar in 2009, IVPN is focused on security, privacy, and standing against surveillance marketing tactics. I’d say this is a perfect VPN for enthusiastic privacy beginners — no leaks, no logs, you don't even need to submit your email address to sign up. IVPN is not great for streaming, but Peacock TV is available from the US servers. You should get a premium VPN that excel...

    The best vpn

IVPN is a great VPN. It is the best vpn for privacy and transparency. The only negative is that it is ... expensive compared to most VPNs. I thought it didn't work with US Netflix but I was wrong - it always opens Netflix. Who wants a vpn that takes care of the client's privacy, don't think anything - IVPN is for him!!!! Annual third-party audits, transparency report, canary, ethics, legal guidelines, transparency and publicity of the team (names of employees and the exact location of the company's headquarters), the way to open an ID account (they don't ask for an e-mail) - all this says that this is a good VPN.More

    IVPN Trial is a scam

Beware of the trial period scam. Even after logging out and uninstalling the VPN client, you are unab... le to cancel the trial before your credit card is charged. We attempted to contact IVPN via several means, but they have failed to respond. Now we will have to dispute the charges through our credit card provider. DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE!More

VPN Unlimited comes across as a very capable VPN, with its main focus being unblocking multiple streaming sites. I wanted to see if it delivered on this promise, and to test whether its security, privacy, and customer service stacks up against the best VPNs in the industry. While it certainly delivered on some of its assertions, unfortunately, it fell short in some essential areas. It unblocke...

    Very Happy with Lifetime license

I picked up a lifetime license and honestly, it's been "solid". It delivers at good speeds, no leaks ... so far have been detected. Offers a wide range of streaming options & Protocols. I've contacted customer service several times and received replies quickly. The servers for P2p are limited to three locations but are still very functional. I'd appreciate a public audit of how secure the service is but it seems none of this info is published for customers, or potential customers to view.More

    Definitely honey pot

Stay away, none of streaming services mentioned works, support may be courteous but will not solve pro... blems. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and others may work for a while but eventually your data will be sold to requesting parties and you get blocked.More

For many people, finding the perfect VPN is a top priority. It’s understandable; we all are looking to surf the web securely and privately and a good VPN can help us do just that. There are hundreds of VPNs out there at a range of prices, and if having a great VPN is important to you, then you’re most likely willing to invest a bit of money into it. However, with all of the options, it’s im...

    Been quite good so far.

I heard about ProXPN from Steve Gibson's "Security Now!" podcast, and purchased it on their recommenda... tion and review. For the most part I have no complaints. I have used VPN4ALL (Which was good too), but I found dollar for dollar ProXPN was better. I've used HideMyAss as well and left over some misgivings I had at the time over whether or not they would actually keep my info private from state authorities - I can't say if that is still an issue now (April 2017) as it was a while back. Bottom line, I am happy with ProXPN at the moment and have not desire/need to leave. The ONLY reason I don't give it 5 stars is that I am also a Linux user with which it is not compatible yet. 4 stars for now because of that (5 if they make it compatible with Linux)More

No longer supported, i switched to another VPN provider.

I heard about PROXPN from Security Now and was a happy user for many years (albeit the connection app ... was outdated and data throughput speeds were slower than expected). However when their root certificate expired I could no longer connect to any VPN server and this continued for many months, so I switched to another VPN provider and will never consider using PROXPN again. Their connection app doesn't integrate well with Windows 10. After disconnecting from the VPN server, I had to manually change network adaptor settings from static IP assignment (which the PROXPN app does upon connection) back to DHCP assigned IP address to prevent network connection issues later. Also, some VPN servers would drop the VPN connection often and the kill switch simply didn't work on any of my computers.More

    Best VPN by Category

    Best VPN Overall

Instead of distracting users with flashy interfaces and features, IVPN focused on capabilities that would make their users’ lives safer and more convenient. We also feel more confident knowing that IVPN is based in a more privacy-friendly location. While VPN Unlimited has a very strong mobile offering, it falls short for users looking to use P2P services.

    Best VPN for Torrents

While none of these are our top picks for torrenting, IVPN is the best of the bunch. VPN Unlimited has a significantly larger server network, but only 3 locations are available for torrenting, and their connection speeds tend to be slow. Both also discourage torrenting using US servers, but only VPN Unlimited has a tendency to throttle P2P file sharing. It also has multi-hop, which makes it harder to trace your IP. The AntiTracker tool will help keep your experience ad and malware-free when torrenting. The Pro plan has port forwarding to potentially speed up downloads.

    Best VPN for Windows

Most VPN users will love how clean and easy to navigate the IVPN Windows app is. It has a flat navigational structure, allowing you to choose a server from the map while toggling settings on and off using the lefthand menu. It comes with WireGuard or OpenVPN support, a kill switch, split tunneling, and Wi-Fi rules. So, it’s everything you expect in a top VPN.

    Best VPN for Android

VPN Unlimited clearly offers a superior app for Android. It supports 6 different VPN protocols, versus IVPN’s 2. It also has a kill switch, which IVPN lacks. While IVPN’s Android has most other features, this is an important security vulnerability and a feature we’d like to see added soon. The network whitelister will also help protect you from unknown, unsecured Wi-Fi networks.

    Best VPN for Mac

Both VPN Unlimited and IVPN offer macOS apps that are nearly identical to their Windows versions. Neither lacks any important features and has modern, ultra-usable designs. It should be a draw, but we’ll give it to IVPN because we still prefer its all-in-one dashboard.

    Best VPN for iOS

VPN Unlimited’s iOS app beats IVPN for many of the same reasons as the Android app. It also supports all 6 protocols and has a kill switch, both of which are rare among VPN apps for iOS. It has an exceptional 4.6-star rating on the Apple App Store, which shows just how high most users regard it.

    Best VPN for USA

IVPN is the best option for users in the US by some margin. Despite having fewer servers overall, it has almost double the US servers VPN Unlimited has. The company is also not based in the US, so the chance that you’ll be impacted by DMCA actions is much smaller. That being said, VPN Unlimited is the better gateway to access international content with servers in over 56 countries.

    The Bottom Line

These three providers are actually very closely matched; however, the rigidity of the IVPN system works heavily in its favour. Whilst it may not necessarily have the added bells and whistles of VPN Unlimited and ProXPN, its stoic focus on user security, privacy and doing the simple things very well sets it above the competition in this comparison. IVPN is one of the only globally recognised providers to accept cash payments, whilst their uncapped bandwidth policy, kill switch and transparent server information are huge positives.
