ZenMate and TotalVPN are two popular VPN providers that support P2P activities. Both VPNs offer dedicated apps for MacOS, Windows, iOS, and Android devices and use 256-bit encryption in all of them. However, that’s about where the similarities between these VPNs end. While ZenMate offers around 300 servers in 30+ countries, TotalVPN has only about 45 servers in 18 countries. TotalVPN allows only three simultaneous device connections per subscription, whereas ZenMate permits a maximum of five. When it comes to the features they offer, the differences between these providers are even easier to spot. Malware and DNS leak protection, for example, are only available in ZenMate’s service. ZenMate also does a better job of bypassing geoblocks, as it reliably unblocks Netflix-US and similar websites. Keep on reading to see how these VPNs compare over several important categories.

ZenMate has been a popular VPN for 10+ years, especially with its free browser extensions. It offers low prices and many appealing features like streaming servers and fast speeds. But none of this matters if it can’t keep you safe, so I decided to find out if it really can. After my tests, I can say ZenMate is a safe VPN offering great value. It works great for streaming, has fast speeds at cl...

    Good experience

No matter your location, using a VPN is important for your online security. I got ZenMate for exactly ... that and I am satisfied with it, especially when it constantly improves its service. Customer support helped me so much and I just wanted to say that I've asked for their help a few times. And every time the support was respectful and fast in their response time. Keep it up!More

    Buggy and Unreliable

Good when it works, with a limited number of available servers. However, 1. Does not always connect ... to the fastest server. 2. On the Mac, it does not automatically connect to a server. 3. On iOS, it does connect automatically BUT does not do so consistently. 4. The Mac app has been buggy and not connecting at all, FOR MONTHS. They still have not fixed it.More

TotalVPN is going out of business, and the company no longer accepts new customers or extends subscriptions. The company, however, will remain active for all existing customers until the renewal date. We spoke with TotalVPN's customer service to confirm this: For current customers, we included our original review below. Looking for a straight-forward VPN service with good network speed? Tota...

Free plan is a waste of time but regular one is one of the best

I tried the free plan and I must say, you watch a YouTube video or two and you max out your limited ba... ndwidth... very annoying and not worth the time to sign up. At the same time, of course I upgraded and since, I enjoy high quality fast streaming. It doesn't worth going the extra annoying free step, I suggest paying a few bucks and saving your time. There just isn't a good free VPN, they are after our money. But again, I must admit, I really think it is a good deal that pays off.More

    Not the best in town

It is impossible to remove TotalVPN. The Windows service (named OVPNService) and related driver rema... in there after uninstall. Setup files remain there after uninstall. The Windows network connection and its tray icon remain there. Their chat agents are totally clueless about this. They suggest to remove manually the app in the Program folder, but the app does not install there. ... and did I mention that all the free servers (just 2) did not work?More

    Best VPN by Category

    Best VPN Overall

ZenMate is renowned for being a reliable VPN provider that prioritizes security and offers easy-to-use apps that easily unblock heavily geo-restricted sites and services worldwide. TotalVPN is a relatively small yet reliable VPN with strong encryption, user-friendly apps, and 24/7 support.

    Best VPN for Torrents

In spite of offering just a single server for P2P file sharing, TotalVPN offers a fairly reliable service for torrenting. ZenMate used to forbid torrenting and other P2P file-sharing activities, but now offers support for torrenting on its paid plans.

    Best VPN for Windows

ZenMate offers a dedicated Windows app that’s easy to set up and is fortified with many security features like DNS leak protection and a kill switch. TotalVPN also has a dedicated Windows client that features 256-bit encryption and tracking protection.

    Best VPN for Android

With ZenMate’s dedicated app for Android, you can expect access to protection from malware and third-party tracking. TotalVPN’s Android app is no longer available for public download, but for existing users who already have it installed, it features a colorful interface and protection from public wi-fi hacking.

    Best VPN for Mac

Apart from offering tracking and malware protection, ZenMate’s dedicated MacOS app features strong encryption and support for multiple tunneling protocols, including OpenVPN and PPTP. Meanwhile, TotalVPN provides its own MacOS app that includes support for multiple protocols including IKEv2.

    Best VPN for iOS

ZenMate is an ideal VPN choice for iOS users, as its dedicated app features protection for wi-fi and allows you connect up to five devices simultaneously. TotalVPN’s iOS app is no longer available for download on the App Store, which also means that existing subscribers can’t benefit from updates. The app does feature a user-friendly interface and strong encryption, however.

    Best VPN for USA

ZenMate is great for bypassing US geoblocks, even those on content providers like Netflix, which are usually hard to crack. ZenMate’s network includes around 70 US servers for this purpose. TotalVPN has US servers for accessing geo-restricted content from any location worldwide, but it does not unblock Netflix-US.

    The Bottom Line

ZenMate wins this contest by being a more innovative provider and showing consistent improvement over time. It offers more value because all of its apps are still available and being updated, and provides more advanced features that help to keep your traffic anonymous. The lack of a kill switch in TotalVPN’s apps puts it at a major disadvantage when stacked up against a provider like ZenMate. Another contributing factor in ZenMate’s win here is the fact that TotalVPN has decided to close its business when existing subscriptions expire.
