HideMyAss! (HMA) and TotalVPN are two very different providers in nearly every area. HMA has the most far-reaching network in the VPN business, with over 900 servers in 190 countries, whereas TotalVPN has about 40 servers in 18 countries. While both providers offer strong encryption, you can only find advanced security features like IPv6 leak protection and a kill switch with HMA. Another notable difference between these two VPNs is that while HideMyAss! offers dedicated streaming servers that reliably unblock US Netflix, TotalVPN is unable to bypass geoblocks on Netflix and several other popular streaming platforms. Both VPNs can, however, be used for torrenting anonymously. These two VPN providers offer dedicated apps for MacOS, Windows, iOS, and Android devices. We should note, however, that TotalVPN’s mobile apps are no longer available for download by new users, as the provider has stopped accepting new subscriptions. In fact, TotalVPN is on the verge of shutting down its business, and is currently phasing out service as existing subscriptions expire. That leaves us with a pretty one-sided comparison, but you can still read on for all the details.

HMA (formerly HideMyAss) is a relatively cheap VPN that claims to offer more server locations than anyone else. However, it has faced some serious controversies in the past. Is it a VPN that can keep you safe and anonymous online? To find out, I performed extensive tests on all its features and explored its updated privacy policy. I also checked out several connection issues customers have rep...

    Excellent value for money!

First, it's a full VPN. Very intuitive and easy app. Lots of connection options and without much loss ... of speed. The official website has the payment method in my local currency, with a localized value and thus leaving a fair value through the VPN. Thank VPNMentor for the product recommendation and targeted discount.More

TotalVPN is going out of business, and the company no longer accepts new customers or extends subscriptions. The company, however, will remain active for all existing customers until the renewal date. We spoke with TotalVPN's customer service to confirm this: For current customers, we included our original review below. Looking for a straight-forward VPN service with good network speed? Tota...

Free plan is a waste of time but regular one is one of the best

I tried the free plan and I must say, you watch a YouTube video or two and you max out your limited ba... ndwidth... very annoying and not worth the time to sign up. At the same time, of course I upgraded and since, I enjoy high quality fast streaming. It doesn't worth going the extra annoying free step, I suggest paying a few bucks and saving your time. There just isn't a good free VPN, they are after our money. But again, I must admit, I really think it is a good deal that pays off.More

    Not the best in town

It is impossible to remove TotalVPN. The Windows service (named OVPNService) and related driver rema... in there after uninstall. Setup files remain there after uninstall. The Windows network connection and its tray icon remain there. Their chat agents are totally clueless about this. They suggest to remove manually the app in the Program folder, but the app does not install there. ... and did I mention that all the free servers (just 2) did not work?More

    Best VPN by Category

    Best VPN Overall

HideMyAss! provides strong security features, an extremely large network of fast servers, and a very reliable service for bypassing tough geoblocks worldwide. Meanwhile, TotalVPN offers a smaller network with strong encryption and cross-platform apps.

    Best VPN for Torrents

HMA is the clear choice for downloading torrents anonymously, as it offers dedicated P2P servers with lightning-fast speeds. Although TotalVPN offers a single dedicated P2P server that allows you to torrent, frequent overloading of that server means erratic, slow connection speeds.

    Best VPN for Windows

HideMyAss! is an exceptional VPN provider for Windows, with a dedicated app that includes IPv6 leak protection and a kill switch. TotalVPN also provides a dedicated Windows app that uses 256-bit encryption but does not include a kill switch.

    Best VPN for Android

A dedicated Android app that’s easy to use and includes a dedicated streaming feature makes HideMyAss! a very attractive VPN for mobile users. TotalVPN also offers a user-friendly Android app for existing users. However, the app is longer available for download, as TotalVPN is not accepting new subscriptions.

    Best VPN for Mac

HideMyAss! has a very powerful MacOS app that features IPv6 leak protection, support for multiple VPN protocols, tracking protection, and a kill switch. TotalVPN also has a MacOS app that features 256-bit encryption and wi-fi protection.

    Best VPN for iOS

If you’re an iOS user with multiple devices, we recommend HMA, as the dedicated app has a simple interface, a kill switch, and support for up to five simultaneous device connections. TotalVPN does have a dedicated iOS client for existing iOS subscribers, but it’s no longer available for download on the App Store.

    Best VPN for USA

If you need to access geoblocked American content from any part of the world, we recommend HMA, as the network includes hundreds of dedicated US servers that reliably unblock Netflix and similar websites. TotalVPN also provides a few US servers for bypassing geoblocks, but the VPN does not unblock Netflix-US.

    The Bottom Line

HideMyAss! decisively beats TotalVPN in every area we analyzed. HMA makes no compromises with security, provides more and better features, and provides more budget-friendly prices. If you’re in need of a VPN with strong security features, decent speeds, a large network of servers, and reliable unlocking of heavily blocked sites like US Netflix and the BBC iPlayer, HideMyAss! is a great option. Finally, TotalVPN’s decision to shut down its business when current subscriptions expire means that no further improvements will be made to the service. Consequently, TotalVPN now stands no chance when compared with top VPNs like HMA.
